Roaming Configuration Procedure for HSS
The HSS (Home subscriber server) is the database handling the subscription data of the EPC user. It contains for example all
Supplementary services, Barring, PDN…
While roaming, anytime an EPC user switch on his mobile, it will perform a Location Update request to the HSS. HSS will
look if the subscriber is allow to roam in this Visited network on checking on its table.
If Subscriber is allow to roam and the VPLMN is a roaming partner, then HSS will responded positively to the Update
location request. In order to do so, HSS should be able to respond to the query from Visited MME or SGSN.
Location update form SGSN will use the S6d interface, while Location update from MME, will be using S6a interface.
When HSS is receiving the Update Location request it will send back to the realm address it is receiving the request from.
Therefore, HSS should have in its entries all realm addresses of VPLMN allowed.
