Chapter 1
INRODUCTION
This chapter includes the background of the study, the statement of the problem,
the significance of the study, and scope and delimination of the study.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Financial challenges are a common problem that affects a student’s academic
performance.

It is a severe concern in many schools, as students in senior high school have

increased spending for school and other miscellaneous things, they will need a greater
financial assistance. As the students continue going to school, they are expected to be
more independent and responsible in managing their finances, particularly in meeting
the requirements set by the teacher and paying for different school projects. However,
this may cause challenges for some students, especially those from low-income families.

This financial burden often creates a negative impact on the students’ overall
psychological, behavioral, and economic well-being. Subsequently, these negative
effects brought about by financial strain impact college student retention and academic
success (Brausch, 2018). Halliday-Wynes and Nguyen (2014) researched that a young
person’s financial situation can affect their engagement in learning, which in turn affects
their current learning outcomes and future study decisions.

Those students who need to meet their living and study expenses by working
may have a decreased capacity to study, because of insufficient time for assignments and
having to miss classes, which may in turn affect their academic results (Devlin, James &
Grigg 2008). A student’s experience with study may also decrease because of their
inability to engage with their study due to personal circumstances, including financial
stress.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aimed primarily to determine the financial challenges encountered by
Grade 11 students at Marikina High School.
Specifically, it tries to answer the following questions:
1. What are the common problems experienced by ABM students in studying the
K-12 Curriculum?
2. Does the financial capability of a student have an impact on their academic
performance?
3. What are their daily financial struggles?
4. What are the possible action plans they can take to overcome these financial
struggles?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will benefit society and give importance to the data, especially in knowing
the financial difficulties encountered by the Grade 11 ABM students in Marikina High
School.

To students, this study will help students gain more understanding in terms of their
financial challenges and will learn how these challenges can affect their academic
performance.

To parents, this study could help parents by allowing them to get insights into the
financial challenges their children face. Also, this study could help them solve the
financial struggles they face.

To teachers, this study may help teachers be aware of the problems that their students
face. This may also enable teachers to customize their way of teaching and might help
students lessen their financial burden.
To future researchers, this study would help the researchers to expound their studies
about financial challenges and how they may affect the students in their studies. Also,
this would serve as a source of information about this particular topic.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on determining the financial challenges experienced by ABM
students and how it can affect their academic performance at school in Marikina High
School. The participants of the study included the Grade 11 ABM students and those
students with the financial burden. This study does not cover those students who can
sustain their everyday needs and don't have a hard time buying school requirements.
