CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

Financial satisfaction refers to an individual's subjective evaluation of their

financial situation, including feelings of contentment, security, and overall well-
being in relation to their finances. Academic achievement, on the other hand,
encompasses the educational outcomes and performance of students in their
academic pursuits. The relationship between financial satisfaction and academic
achievement has been a topic of interest in educational research, as it is believed
that financial satisfaction can have a significant impact on students' academic
success.

In the context of Senior High School Students, understanding the influence of

financial satisfaction on academic achievement is crucial for developing effective
strategies to support students' educational goals. Merida Vocational School is
known for offering vocational and technical education programs, preparing
students for future careers in various industries. However, financial challenges
can hinder students' ability to fully engage in their academic pursuits and achieve
their potential.

Financial satisfaction plays a vital role in students' overall well-being and

academic success. When students feel satisfied with their financial situation, they
are more likely to experience reduced stress levels, increased motivation, and
better mental health, all of which can positively impact their academic
performance. On the other hand, financial dissatisfaction can lead to increased
stress, anxiety, and distractions, which may hinder students' ability to focus on
their studies and perform well academically

Factors influencing financial satisfaction among senior high school students in

Merida Vocational School can vary. Family income and socioeconomic status are
significant factors that can affect students' financial satisfaction. Students from
low-income backgrounds may face financial constraints that limit their access to
educational resources, such as textbooks, technology, and extracurricular
activities, which can have an impact on their academic achievement.

Financial literacy is another important factor that influences students' financial

satisfaction. Students who possess knowledge and skills related to budgeting,
saving, and managing their finances are more likely to feel satisfied with their
financial situation. Financial literacy programs and interventions can equip
students with the necessary skills to make informed financial decisions and
improve their financial satisfaction.

Parental support also plays a crucial role in students' financial satisfaction.

Parents who provide financial guidance, support, and open communication about
money matters can positively influence their children's financial satisfaction.
Parental involvement in financial planning, setting financial goals, and teaching
responsible financial behaviors can contribute to students' overall financial well-
being and academic achievement.

Access to resources within the school environment, such as scholarships,

financial aid programs, and educational support services, can also impact
students' financial satisfaction. Schools that prioritize providing equitable access
to educational resources and support can help alleviate financial stress and
enhance students' financial satisfaction.

Understanding the influence of financial satisfaction on the academic

achievement of senior high school students in Merida Vocational School is
essential for developing targeted interventions and support systems to enhance
students' financial well-being and academic success. By identifying the factors
that contribute to financial satisfaction and recognizing the challenges students
face, educators, policymakers, and student support services can work together to
create an environment that promotes financial satisfaction and fosters academic
achievement among senior high school students in Merida Vocational School.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The problem addressed in this study is to examine the influence of financial
satisfaction on the academic achievement of senior high school students.
Specifically, the study aims to investigate the relationship between financial
satisfaction and academic performance among senior high school students in
order to understand how financial well-being impacts their educational outcomes.

The problem arises from the recognition that financial satisfaction plays a
significant role in students' overall well-being and can potentially affect their
ability to succeed academically. While previous research has explored the
relationship between financial satisfaction and academic achievement, there is a
need to specifically examine this relationship among senior high school students.
This population is particularly vulnerable to financial challenges, as they navigate
their educational journey while facing various financial constraints and
responsibilities.

This study seeks to address the ff questions.

1. What is the level of financial satisfaction among senior high school students?

2. Is there a significant relationship between financial satisfaction and academic

achievement among senior high school students?

3. What are the factors that contribute to financial satisfaction among senior high
school students?

4. How does financial satisfaction impact the academic performance of senior

high school students?

1.3 Theoritical Framework

The threoritical of this research is the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory
provides a framework for understanding the relationship between financial
satisfaction and academic achievement. According to Maslow, individuals have a
hierarchy of needs, with physiological needs as the foundation. These
physiological needs include basic necessities such as food, shelter, and financial
security.
1. Financial Satisfaction: This is the independent variable and represents the level of satisfaction or
Financial satisfaction plays a role in meeting these physiological needs. When

to have their basic needs met, which creates a stable foundation for their overall
well-being, including academic achievement.

When students have their financial needs met, they are less likely to experience
financial stress and worry. This reduces distractions and allows them to focus
more on their studies, leading to improved academic performance. Financial
satisfaction can also provide students with access to resources and opportunities
that can enhance their educational experiences, such as purchasing textbooks,
attending educational events, or participating in extracurricular activities.

Moreover, financial satisfaction can contribute to a sense of stability and safety,

which are important for students to feel secure and comfortable in Achievement:

1.4 Conceptual Framework

2. Mediating Factors: These are variables that
may mediate or influence the relationship
between financial satisfaction and academic
achievement. They can be placed in the middle
of the framework. Examples of mediating
factors include:

a. Psychological Well-being: This factor

encompasses students' mental and emotional
state, including their self-esteem, motivation,
and overall well-being. Financial satisfaction can
impact psychological well-being, which, in turn,
can influence academic achievement.

b. Access to Educational Resources: This factor refers

to the availability of resources necessary for
academic success, such as textbooks, technology, and
educational materials. Financial satisfaction can
affect students' access to these resources, which
can impact their academic achievement.

c. Educational Support: This factor represents

the level of support students receive from
their families, schools, and communities.
Financial satisfaction can influence the
availability of educational support, including
tutoring, mentorship, and extracurricular
opportunities, which can impact academic
achievement.
1.5 Scope and Limitations
This study focuses on the influence of financial satisfaction on the
academic achievement of senior high school students in Merida
Vocational School and this research will not explore the impact
satisfaction on other aspects of students life, such as mental health or
over all being.

1.6 Defination of Terms

1. Financial Satisfaction - In the context of this study, financial

stability, access to resources, and the ability to meet financial needs
and goals.

2. Academic Achievement - Academic achievement refers to the

level of success and performance that senior high school students
attain in their educational pursuits. It includes various indicators such as
grades, test scores, completion of coursework, participation in
extracurricular activities, and overall academic progress.

3. Influence - In this study, influence refers to the impact or effect that

financial satisfaction has on the academic achievement of senior high
school students. It involves examining the relationship between these
two variables to determine the extent to which financial satisfaction
may contribute to or influence academic success.
4. Senior High School Students - Senior high school students are
individuals who are enrolled in the final years of their secondary
education, typically between the ages of 15 to 18 years old. They are
undergoing specialized education and training programs to prepare for
higher education or entry into the workforce.

5. Merida Vocational School - Merida Vocational School is a specific

educational institution located in a particular geographical area
(Merida). It provides vocational education and training programs
specifically tailored to senior high school students. It serves as the
setting for this study, focusing on senior high school students attending
this vocational school.

1.7 Sagnificant of the Study

The study aims to explore the relationship between
financial satisfaction and academic achievement. By examining
this relationship, it can provide insights into how financial well-
being may impact students' academic performance. This
understanding can contribute to the development of strategies
and interventions to support students in achieving better
academic outcomes.

CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature

Parental socioeconomic background might provide sufficient support

about the needs of their children. Also, parental support can assist and
encouraged their children to be involved in academic activities that can
enhance more in their children’s academic performance (Henrietta &
Odozi, 2014). Level of parental income impacts the academic
achievement of the students. Additionally, the provision of parents in
moral, financial and material support can encourage the students to
perform academically in school (Machebe, Ezegbe, & Onuoha, 2017).
Students’who has low socioeconomic status may have lower academics
than those who have higher income level (Walpole, 2003).
Students’that has a low socioeconomic status may have lower
academic achievement compared to the students who have a higher
socioeconomic status. Parental socioeconomic status can enhance
more on their children’s academic achievement (Suleman, Aslam,
Hussain, Shakir, & Nisa, 2012). Family support enables the child to
establish a better academic status (Chohan, 2010). Students who
belong to stable socioeconomic status of a family will impact on their
academic performances in school (Saifi & Mehmood, 2011). The
affordability of student economic background can help them in
enhancing their academic performances (Okioga, 2013). Parental
involvement of their children’s studies whether financially or morally
support can impact on the academic achievement of their children
(Jeynes, 2007). The students can perform well academically especially
when their parents were engaged and supported them compared to
those who are not supported by their parents (Shahzad, Abdullah,
Fatima, Riaz, & Mehmood, n.d). Receiving support from parents either
financially, morally or materials needed of students’absolutely
enhanced the students’ability to complete on their studies (Astin,
1975). The family income was considered as a strong factor of
socioeconomic status that affects the students’achievement (Akhtar,
2012). Students from high socioeconomic background can often
perform well academically than those who are in a low socioeconomic
status (Asiegbu & Ezeugbor, 2018). The dominant factor of financial
stability is a habit of saving. Individuals will have financial satisfaction if
they will know how to manage their finances (Arifin, 2018). The amount
of socioeconomic status of a family may often depend on their
capability to save (Zainal, Kamaruddin, & Nathan, 2019).
Students’financial aid availability, academic performance as well as
parental support were included as important influences toward
students’completion (Lin, 2016).

Providing sufficient support can assist the students to persist in their

studies (Haynes, 2008). Establishing learning communities that can be
useful in teaching and tutoring students can help them in building
persistence and can contribute in achieving their desired goals
(Graham, Frederick, Winston, Hunter, & Handelsman, 2016). Financial
matters are the primary support that a student need in order to
become persistent in their studies (Vanthournout, Coertjens, Gijbels, &
Donche, 2012). Family economic background are expected to influence
the students to exert more on academics which can lead them to
persist (Ethington, 1990). The increase of students’persistence may
depend on the level of financial status that they belong (Voorhees,
1985). Financial assistance is relevant to the students’decision either to
persist or not. In other words, students’who received sufficient financial
aid can more likely to persist in studies than those who received lack of
aid (Terkla, 1984). Families with lower socioeconomic status may lack of
financial aid availability and educational support to their children’s
readiness at school. Therefore, the students’academic persistence will
rely if their family has better income level to support (Memon, Joubish,
& Khurram, 2010). Students’achievement and academic integration
could be a factor that lead to persistence (Lichtenstein, 2002).
Academic and social activities are the factors that can contribute to
students’persistence (Barbatis, 2010). Students’financial aid becomes
increasingly important on persistence (Stewart, Lim, & Kim, 2015).
Students’socioeconomic status displayed increasing association with
persistence (Cabrera, Hansen, & Stampen, 1990). Indeed, income
levels, financial aid packages interact as predictors on
students’persistence. Thus, financial aid and the level of income play a
vital role in persistence (Mendoza, Mendez, & Malcolm, 2009).
Financial aid availability has a total significant effect on
students’persistence. Financial aid play a role to students for it helps to
facilitate the accomplishments and participation of students in activities
that leads to a better academic achievement (Cabrera, Nora, &
Castaneda, 1992). Students with Family of high level of income are
more persevere to achieve better in school than those with low income
family (Somers, 1995). Educating parents to be supportive on their
child’s studies can promote students persistence. Specifically, parents
can enhance and encourage their children to persist and still be
competent at school (Ratelle, Larose, Guay, Senecal, & Laval, 2005).
