THE HANDY BRINGS LOTS OF MONEY

The chief executive of the Olivetti group of companies, Francesco Caio says he realized the
need for high speed data communication between its companies.

And they believed it could radically reduce the cost of doing business through using email and
data communications. So he shifted the companies of which he had become General Manager
from internets and websites to making the Mobile cellular phone. It was a shift for which
overwhelming economies of scale are claimed “What I spotted was the overwhelming
economist of scale” he has quoted as saying after costs had been cut to one-tenth.

This success derived from his vision for the companies audit was a vision which he
successfully got his collaborators to share. The vision and his methods were later vindicated
by the figures that show the loss or profit in the balance sheet at the end of the year and by
those in the books that show the daily cash flow.

Having pioneered the mobile cellular phone in Italy, he is known there as Mr Mobile where
he is also credited with having launched Italy’s first mobile phone network. This happened in
1990 before the world cup when the mobile network was built from the simple philosophy
that something simple but of high quality should be delivered to the customer. From this, the
eventually designed the world’s first washing machine that communicates with the Internet
using a built-in mobile phone: the margherita 2000 con machine which sends reports about
breakdowns and innovations, he advises that “you should define what you want to do and
why” adding that works, the numbers will it”. This said, he later embarked on a restructuring
of the set-up, a modernizalion of the management and redesign of the brand after which it is
reported to have increased its value fivefold.

But all was not exactly laid sailing for him. He was once obliged on the board over whether a
breakeven would be an achievable target in 1996. Soon afterwards, the chairman and the said
acolytes were to have been found guilty of false accounting and resigned.

Speaking about the incident and his period in the cold, he says “there’s no such thing as a bad
experience in business” and that “any experience is a good experience in my book”.
