Greetings: Good morning Madam Chairman, ladies and gentlemen,

boys and girls. The motion for our debate today is that “Gifted schools
should be abolished”. We, the affirmative team, believe that this
statement is true.
B. Rebuttal:
 The 1st speaker of the negative team has tried to tell you that… We
don’t agree with this point because…
 (S)he also said that… This is not wholly true because…
C. Recap: Our 1st speaker has already explained…
D. Now I’m going to discuss my points.
1. My first point is that a gifted program is meant to separate the gifted
students from the non-identified kids, then a gifted child may find
themselves a small fish in a big pond of other gifted ones.
-> Research has shown that a child's self-esteem can suffer when they
no longer feel they have an academic advantage over their peers; they
compare themselves to their gifted peers and may feel they do not
measure up.
2. My second point is that the expectations of gifted students play a huge
role in how parents treat their children.
-> Parents sometimes push their children too hard if they think they are
talented. Also, if parents expect a student to be able to complete their
work with ease, they may not be sympathetic if they have difficulty in a
particular area.
3. My third and last point is that gifted students often expect too much of
their performance.
-> A child can expect that they can complete tasks with ease because
they have been told that they are gifted and beat themselves up if they
get stuck. This can lead to students stopping trying out of fear of failure;
they can only try to do the tasks they know they can complete with little
problems.
-> Too much work on improving academic ability in gifted students can
lead to psychological illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorders,
asthenia, and even cause students to have negative thoughts and act
inconsiderately. I once read an article that reported about a Chinese girl,
who studied too much when she was in a gifted school which led to her
depression. When she couldn’t bear it anymore, she suicide, leaving
behind her family that suffered terribly.
4. So, dear Madam Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, in
conclusion, I believe that gifted schools have negative effects on
students, thus they should be abolished.
