Fuel injection pumps with self vent feature January 1989

New CAV DPA and DPS fuel injection pumps which will automatically eliminate air from the pump have been
introduced on some engines. These pumps have a vent pipe (A1) fitted between the top of the pump and the
atomiser leak-off pipe. Vent screws are not fitted to these pumps and connections or plugs need not be
released to eliminate air from the pump.
To eliminate air from the fuel system
If the system or a component in the system has been drained:
1 Turn the start key to the 'R' position. If a manual stop control is fitted, ensure that it is in the 'run' position.
2 Operate the lever of the fuel lift pump slowly for approximately two minutes.
3 Operate the starter motor until the engine starts.
