LESSON 7G- SPEAKING: PHOTO COMPARISON AND ROLE-PLAY

I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:

1. Knowledge

- Understand and analyze conversations about cultural events and shows, focusing on
preferences and choices.

- Acquire and incorporate vocabulary related to various types of cultural events and
shows.

2. Competences

- Demonstrate proficiency in using a variety of expressions to express preferences for


different types of shows.

- Utilize phrases for introducing negative opinions in discussions about cultural events
and shows.

- Compare ideas, justify opinions, and engage in discussions about preferences


effectively.

3. Personal qualities

- Exhibit critical thinking and creativity when expressing and justifying preferences for
cultural events and shows.

- Cultivate an appreciation for diverse forms of entertainment and cultural experiences.

II. MATERIALS

- Grade 11 textbook, Unit 7G, Speaking

- Computer connected to the Internet

- PowerPoint Unit 7G

III. PROCEDURES

1. ACTIVITY 1: LEAD-IN (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Introduce the new lesson and set the scene for Ss to acquire new language.

- Get students' attention at the beginning of the class.

- Activate Ss’ background knowledge.

- Students can gain more confidence and interest in the lesson.

b. Content:

- Ss work in groups, say aloud their answers, and express their opinions.

The last show you went to see (3 mins)

- Ask students: What was the last show you went to see? Students’ ideas.
Did you enjoy it?

- Students discuss the questions in pairs.

- Elicit some answers.

Exercise 1 (2 mins)

- Go through the cultural events and shows together and


elicit their meanings.

- In pairs, students match the photos with three of the

types of show and take turns to describe the photos.

- Elicit some descriptions.

e. Assessment

- Teacher observes the groups and gives feedback.

- T and other students give feedback to individual answers.

2. ACTIVITY 2: PRE-SPEAKING (18 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Ss understand how to compare and contrast photos.

b. Content:

- Exercises 2-5.

c. Products:

- Ss complete the exercises in the book and have some ideas for their own conversations.

d. Organization

Exercise 2 (5 mins)

- Go through the instructions together. Responses from Ss

- One student chooses two photos without telling their


partner which ones they have chosen. They then
compare and contrast the photos. Can their partner guess
which ones they chose?

- The second student chooses two photos and repeats the


activity.

- Circulate and monitor help where necessary.

- Ask a few students to share their ideas with the class

Exercise 3 (6 mins)

- Ask students to read the instructions and the task.

- Play the recording for students to note down the type


of show each student chooses and the details they
mention.

- Check answers as a class. Ask students if they agree


with the speakers’ choices.

Exercise 4 (1 mins)

- Ask students to read Speaking Strategy 1 and choose


the strongest expressions.

- Check answers as a class.

Exercise 5 (6 mins)

- Go through Speaking Strategy 2 together.

- Play the recording again for students to note down the


phrases from exercise 4 and Speaking Strategy 2 that
they hear.

- Check answers as a class.

e. Assessment

- Teacher checks students’ pronunciation and gives feedback.

- Teacher checks students’ understanding of speaking strategy.

- Teacher observes Ss’ writing of vocabulary on their notebooks.

3. ACTIVITY 3: WHILE-SPEAKING (15 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Ss can ask about preferences.

b. Content:

- Exercise 6.

c. Products:

- Students discuss with their friends, take notes and give a talk.

Exercise 6

- In pairs, students take turns to ask and answer Responses from Ss

4. ACTIVITY 3: POST-SPEAKING (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Ss can improve their speaking based on feedback.

b. Content:

- T’s feedback and peer’s feedback.

c. Products:

- Students take notes of their mistakes.

Feedback and Correction

- T invites some students to give feedback on their Students’ mistakes in speaking.

been covered in this lesson.

- T asks students: What have you learned today? What can you do now? and elicit answers: I
can understand students stating their preferences for different types of show. I can compare
ideas and justify opinions using phrases for expressing preferences and phrases for
introducing negative opinions.
