VI. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Activity 1.3 At what point does a natural or technological/human-induced event

become a disaster?
Our mother earth is slowly dying, and we need to act immediately because as long
as we live, we have a role or responsibility that we should consider as our top priority, and
while we are still breathing, we should think and act wisely before doing anything,
conducting some preliminary research to determine whether your action or decision will
have a significant impact on the community. The state of our mother earth reveals who we
are as humans who live and profit from it, as well as what activities we are taking. It is
difficult to see and frustrating to realize that we, as humans who benefit from it, are the
cause of disasters and calamities, and it all starts with our actions.
Human activities are the primary cause of our suffering; through our small actions,
we can make a significant contribution not only to ourselves but also to the entire
community; we can choose to live in a rightful manner and begin living in a manner that will
benefit the community; however, as we can see and experience, there are many activities
that humans engage in that have an impact on our environment, and it is a sad reality that
we should take action. Human activities such as improper disposal of toxic waste from
factories that have had a chemical spill and result in industrial pollution, factory explosions,
and fires caused by human carelessness are all disasters or events caused by human
uncontrolled or irresponsible behavior. Whether natural or unintentional, disaster refers to
major problems that affect the entire community and result in a large uproar that causes the
entire community to suffer, then a technological or human-induced event becomes a
disaster when it becomes a cause of community suffering because the human activities
that I've mentioned affect a large number of people; for example, a fire that explodes will
result in a large number of losses, including human lives and property such as homes and
other valuables from the victims, A toxic or chemical waste that comes from factories
causes water pollution, and as far as I know, human beings are also dependent on natural
resources, which is why we are still alive. However, as we can see, natural resources are
slowly dying because human waste is swimming instead of humans, which is why all of
these things lead to disaster and that is the result of human activities.
God has given us the privilege of living in His creation; however, we are only a
stranger, an alien passing through; therefore, we should have a conscience and show

respect for the creation while living; we should not take for granted what God has given and
provided for us because it is for us, but it is not for us forever because we all have a time
limit; therefore, we should take our role or duty seriously by loving the creation, We should
adjust our methods of thinking so that before we take action, we ask ourselves if the action
we are taking is good to everyone. , in other words, we should not be selfish humans, but
rather think about each other, and as stewards of God's creation, we have a huge
responsibility to shoulder so that we can continue to live as peacefully as we want, because
I know each of us wants to live in a peaceful community with plenty of positive harmony in
our surroundings and it will all happen if we change our ways and be an eco-friendly
person.

Activity 1.5 Among the common disasters we experience in our country, choose one
and state some mitigation strategies you need to do to protect yourself and your
family from any danger it may cause.

Our country, the Philippines, is surrounded by bodies of water and is a part of the
ring of fire, we are prone to volcanic eruptions. We all know that our country is prone to
floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other natural disasters, which is why we should
raise awareness to everyone. We can't stop or prevent these kinds of disasters from
happening because they are natural, and only God has the power to control them, but we
can decrease the destruction or our situation by implementing mitigation techniques while
we are still breathing. We live in a modern world where technological advancement is highly
recommended because we can use it in a variety of ways. Social media platforms such as
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others are very valuable and widely used today by kids,
youth, and adults, and we can use them in a positive way instead of spreading humor and
wasting our time on unimportant things, we can use social media platforms to spread
awareness such as encouraging everyone to plant trees because trees are very beneficial to
the environment, We have a habitat and materials made of wood, as well as food that we
can harvest from trees that bear fruits so that we can eat, and that is why trees are so
important to all humans. However, as we can see, it is slowly dying and as a result of human
bad habits or activities wherein people begin to live by thinking for themselves, wherein they
choose to progress economically by cutting trees and starting to make money out of them
without even replacing them, it is very alarming because instead of seeing a beautiful forest
or mountain, we can see a lot of buildings being built because people want to have a
business. This is not bad, but instead of letting our eagerness drive us away from who we

are as strangers in our world, we should change our ways on how to make our community
safe and healthy to live in. As a human and a youth, we can share and contribute to lessen
and spread awareness, and it all starts with us on how we can make an immediate response
or action in this alarming situation towards our environment, wherein we can start on
cleaning and start to plant more trees because trees absorb waters when heavy rains come
and fall down, instead of washing us all, trees have a way of blocking the waters by sipping
it before it comes down to us, and it will lessen the amount of water that comes down to us.
We can save many lives by planting trees, which is why we must learn how to replace what
has been lost, which is to begin planting. We can also take a different approach to
approaching everyone by conducting activities such as tree planting while also holding a
seminar that will provide people with a thorough understanding of the importance of a clean
and healthy environment, and we can use that as an opportunity to turn them into world
changers who care about and love what God has created.
I'm a young person, and I know I still have time to spread the good news that
we can all live in a secure environment if we start living well. We should consider what is
best for everyone, not just for ourselves. I know that we can all make a difference in our
society in small ways, so don't be afraid to do what's right. However, we must face the
reality that we must have the confidence to shout so that everyone hears your small voice
on behalf of the crying mother earth. We can cry and mourn for the time being, but we must
stand up for truth so that everyone realizes that we are losing a great treasure, our
environment, and that we still have the opportunity to make all things right.
