CALIXTRO, Jorcel Dayne NSTP- CWTS

BSBA MM 1-1 REFLECTION PAPER

These past few months enrolled under the subject NSTP-CWTS, I have gained a lot of
knowledge and experiences. Coupled with its various student projects, practical learnings
truly help me open my eyes, mind, and heart more to contribute more for society and impart
my service to others. Through a number of modules and webinars, I can slowly but surely
grasp the things that matters the most in our current situation as a country or even as the
world. CWTS make sure that the students’ attitudes and competencies will be perceived as
something valuable. This program is truly relevant for the youth’s character development,
molding us to be better and responsible citizens as well as becoming nation-builders.
In the first half of module 1, I then fully understand the big duty of students in serving the
purpose of creating a thriving space for the future. I learned why NSTP is stated in the law
and thoroughly identified the provisions that comes with it (Republic Act No. 9163). It
embeds us the consciousness and preparedness through active participation. We have the
obligation to ensure the general welfare of life for the members of the community and the
influence to enhance facilities, especially in the aspects of health, education, environment,
entrepreneurship, safety, recreation, and morals of the citizenry. With this information, I must
say that NSTP is required because of the heavy role that it plays in enrichment and training
of the hope of a country which is the new generations. For the second half of module 1, I also
get to learn the PUP Philosophy, Vision, Mission, Shared Values and Principles, and Ten
Pillars along with PUP NSTP’s Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives.
For module 2, I realized the essential piece of our values as Filipinos which gives us the
clear sense of individuality as people; this is what makes us unique and stand out. Regardless
of age, status or religion, these good citizenship values must be embodied and practiced for it
will bring great rewards for us and our country in the long run. This stimulates the love for
our nation, at the same time, promotes unity despite being diverse. Through doing our part,
we do not become the problem but rather the solution. The one who possesses the traits of
respectfulness, courtesy, and consideration and the one who observes punctuality,
promptness, and good moral conduct are kinds that function well for the betterment.

Through module 3 accompanied by an
effective webinar on Disaster Risk Reduction and Preparedness, I get to learn the full
meaning of Disaster Risk Reduction Management, differentiate hazards from disasters,
discuss the DRRM aspects, and analyze the different strategies on how to prevent disasters,
most especially what to do before, during, and after experiencing one. As the Philippines
being one of the countries most exposed to a plethora of hazards such as floods, earthquakes,
storms, volcanic eruptions, etc., we must really be informed and trained regarding these
particular situations. Our country is susceptible to impact because of its geography, climate,
and human-induced calamities. Some factors that make people more vulnerable to disaster
include poverty, limited access to medical services, and corruption. With these, I truly
appreciate the spirit of “bayanihan” among us Filipinos, expressly through trying times.
Module 4 is probably my favorite chapter to discourse with because I must say that
climate change is real and is really happening right now. Environmental protection is indeed
a vital concern to actually save and preserve this planet. Due to many human activities and
societal progress, we have disturbed our nature in the most destructing ways. Pollutions are
one of the most powerful evidence of it. Now, it is our accountability that will get us to see
transformation in our surroundings. Through this topic, I am able to re-evaluate my carbon
print in this world and what harmful things I did in the past that needs to be changed. It also
enables me to do ecological measures in my own way. For example, I opt for thrifted clothes
for more sustainable lifestyle, I utilize metal/bamboo straws to avoid plastic usage, I
maximize the potential of 3Rs. Small steps pave way for big change. Our efforts create a
ripple of significant impacts.

With Kabataan and Kalikasan: A webinar on Urban Forestry, Biodiversity and Coastal
Conservation, I have been equipped with resourceful familiarity with what’s currently
happening with our environment and natural resources. As discussed by Ms. Aleine Miranda,
urbanization is what common industrial problem we are facing right now. The implications
of this are 1) air, water and solid wastes pollution, 2) excessive energy use and GHG
emissions from mobile sources, 3) loss of natural habitats and green spaces due to
uncontrolled urban development. Like every other action, it also has consequences which

are harmful to people’s health and Earth, such as extremely deteriorated air quality, higher
temperatures, increase in greenhouse gases, global warming, intense noise level, and greater
psychological stress. In order to compromise it, we should integrate greeneries, green spaces,
and most especially invest in urban forestry. Our government should consider the
development of forest parks, greenbelts, nature center or road side planting; just like what
Singapore (Botanic Garden) and Japan (Tokyo Meguro Canal) is doing. In our own ways, we
can incorporate tree planting activities in our agenda, as I personally grow my own tree
through a virtual program which is GCash Forest.
In the aspect of marine biodiversity conservation, Philippines is a hotspot for it because
of high concentration of species and endemism, but also threats. Loss and destruction of
these hotspots could result to massive species extinctions. By prioritizing these areas, we can
maximize species and saved them from extinction. It is important for us, humans, to conserve
coastal and marine ecosystems because we are the sole benefactor, the end user of these. Our
economic system runs from it. Our goods came from it: fish harvests, water, genetic material.
They serve as in many different forms: recreation, tourism, erosion control, storm protection,
pollution control, and habitat provision. There are many marine habitats in our country:
lagoons, mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, etc., and it is our duty to protect and not
exploit them for our own greedy reasons.
I realized by the end of the session that we should give back to what’s feeding us,
clothing us, sheltering us, and giving us life— which is mother nature. With this, we can
preserve this place for future generations and enjoy its perks in the present.
