PLEASE FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTION TO TAKE THE DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST (DET)

1. Click here (https://englishtest.duolingo.com/) to register for the DET exam

2. On the top right, please choose ‘sign up’

3. Create an account using an active email address and password. Please note that if you are 15 or
under you must use your parent’s email address.

4. After you create the account you will be asked to choose what you are interested in. For example
Undergraduate or Graduate.
5. You will then be asked to select one of the below. If you are certain you want to take the test
please choose ‘Purchase the test’, this will bring you to a payment page where you can pay via
PayPal or Credit/ Debit card – see below. The cost of the test is 49 US Dollars.

6. You will require your passport, driver’s license or other government ID to submit before taking the
test.

7. You will need to be in a quiet room that is well lit, with good internet connection, a front facing
camera, microphone and speaker. You cannot wear headphones or earbuds. You will be able to do a
sound test before commencing.
8. You will be asked to pose for a headshot before the exam, Artificial Intelligence will ensure that
this matches your ID through facial recognition software. This photo will also go on your certificate
that you will submit to your institution.

9. After your photo and the photo of your ID is taken you will be notified of some rules. Please note
that your test will not be certified in the following cases:

- If you are not visible at all time i.e. you cannot turn your head or leave the room

- If you open another browser or exit full screen

- If you communicate with another person

- If another person enters the room

- If you use any outside reference material e.g. a mobile phone

10. The test will then begin and you have approximately 45 minutes to complete. The test is
recorded and reviewed by a human proctor within 48 hours. Your test may not be certified if they
note any suspicious behaviour.

11. Your speaking test is recorded and sent to the accepting institution

12. The test is a mix of activities:

- Type the missing word

- Record yourself repeating a written statement

- Write a sentence to describe an image

- Select the real English words from a list

- Type the statement you hear

- Respond to a question (writing test)

- Choose a topic to write about (writing test)

- Speak about a topic presented (speaking test 1- 3 minutes)

13. At the end of the test you select the institution you’d like to receive the certificate. You can have
a certified result twice in a 30 day period.

14. You normally receive the result within a week, you should screenshot and send to Griffith College

15. Your score is valid for 2 years. But please note that Griffith College is only accepting the
Duolingo English Test as a temporary measure for the 2021/2022 intake, arising from the Covid-19
pandemic.
