CIRRUS AIRPLANE MAINTENANCE MANUAL CHAPTER 5-20: MAINTENANCE

VISION SF50 GENERAL

Maintenance
5-20: SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE

1. General

These inspections meet the intent of 14 CFR § 23.1529, 14 CFR § 91.409, 14 CFR § 135.419, and
Part 43, Appendix D. In addition to the inspections prescribed by this schedule, the altimeter
instrument and static system and all ATC transponders MUST be tested and inspected at
24-month intervals in compliance with the requirements specified in 14 CFR § 91.411 and 91.413.
The owner and/or operator is primarily responsible for maintaining the airplane in an airworthy
condition. This includes compliance with all applicable Airworthiness Directives. It is further the
responsibility of the owner or operator to ensure the airplane is inspected as specified in Parts 91,
135, and 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations. This inspection guide is not intended to be
all-inclusive, for no such guide can replace the good judgment of a certified airframe and power
plant mechanic. As the one primarily responsible for the airworthiness of the airplane, the owner
or operator should select only qualified personnel to maintain the airplane.
While this guide may be used as an outline, detailed information of the many systems and
components in the airplane will be found in the various chapters of the Maintenance Manual and
pertinent vendor publications. It is recommended that reference be made to the applicable Main-
tenance Handbooks, Service Instructions, applicable FAA Regulations and Publications, Vendor’s
Bulletins and Vendor’s Specifications for torque values, clearances, settings, tolerances, and other
requirements. It is the responsibility of the owner or operator to ensure the airframe and power
plant mechanic inspecting the airplane has access to the previously noted documents as well as
to this inspection guide.

2. Maintenance Groups

The SF50 scheduled maintenance program consists of four groups of tasks:

• Systems and powerplant maintenance: Tasks performed on electrical, mechanical, and
powerplant systems and components, including plumbing, ducting, and wiring. Includes
lubrication or servicing tasks, checks to verify operation, inspections or functional checks to
detect degradation of function, restoration tasks to reduce failure rate, or discard tasks to
avoid failures or to reduce failure rate. These tasks are defined in the table below.
• Metallic structure inspections: General visual inspections and visual checks performed on
specific metallic structures for security and general condition, and/or to determine that they
are fulfilling their intended purpose.
• NOTE •
Composite structure inspections are addressed in the Time Limits Section. (Refer to
5-10)

MAINTENANCE GROUPS VISION SF50

• Zonal inspections: General visual inspections and visual checks applied to each zone,
defined by access and area, to check all systems and power plant installations and structure
within the zone for security and general condition, and/or to determine that they are
fulfilling their intended purpose. The SF50 includes 23 zones. (See Figure 5-20-1)
• Lightning/HIRF measurements: Discrete resistance checks of electrically conductive paths
including system electrical bonds, lightning protection, and static discharge schemes to
verify that measured resistance values fall within the allowable ranges. The tasks are
defined in terms of the airplane zone where the lightning/HIRF provisions are installed.

Task Types: ATA MSG-3 Definition:

Lubrication (LUB) Any act of Lubrication or Servicing for the purpose of maintaining inherent design
capabilities.
Servicing (SVC)

Operational Check (OPC) A task to determine that an item is fulfilling its intended purpose. The check does
not require quantitative tolerances. This is a failure finding task.

Visual Check (VCK) An observation to determine that an item is fulfilling its intended purpose. The
check does not require quantitative tolerances. This is a failure finding task.

General Visual Inspection A visual examination of an interior or exterior area, installation or assembly to
(GVI) detect obvious damage, failure, or irregularity. This level of inspection is made from
within touching distance, unless otherwise specified. A mirror may be necessary to
enhance visual access to all exposed surfaces in the inspection area. This level of
inspection is made under normally available lighting conditions such as daylight,
hangar lighting, flashlight or drop-light and may require removal or opening of
access panels or doors. Stands, ladders or platforms may be required to gain
proximity to the area being checked.

Detailed Inspection (DET) An intensive examination of a specific item, installation or assembly to detect
damage, failure, or irregularity. Available lighting is normally supplemented with a
direct source of good lighting at an intensity deemed appropriate. Inspection aids
such as mirrors, magnifying lenses, etc. may be necessary. Surface cleaning and
elaborate access procedures may be required.

Special Detailed An intensive examination of a specific item, installation, or assembly to detect

Inspection (SDI) damage, failure, or irregularity. The examination is likely to make extensive use of
specialized Inspection Techniques and/or equipment. Intricate cleaning and
substantial access or disassembly procedure may be required.

Functional Check (FNC) A quantitative check to determine if one or more functions of an item performs
within specified limits.

Restoration (REST) That work necessary to return the item to a specific standard.
Since Restoration may vary from cleaning or replacement of single parts up to a
complete overhaul, the scope of each assigned restoration task has to be specified.

Discard (DSC) The removal from service of an item at a specified life limit.
Discard tasks are normally applied to so-called single celled parts such as cartridges,
canisters, cylinders, engine disks, safe-life structural members, etc.

INSPECTION CRITERIA VISION SF50

3. Inspection Criteria

When called for by an inspection task (Visual Check, General Visual Inspection, Detailed Inspec-
tion, or Zonal Inspection), or any time an area is visible during an inspection or maintenance
action, the following visual inspection criteria is accomplished without requiring disassembly or
removal of adjacent equipment unless otherwise specified. The criteria will normally apply to
those areas, surfaces, or items which become visible by the removal or opening of access doors,
panels, fairings, or nacelle. The visual inspection shall include an examination by area, compo-
nent, detail, assembly, or installation, as well as any associated equipment within the immediate
vicinity, using any inspection aids considered necessary.
Visual Inspection criteria will normally consist of, but are not limited to the following:

A. Moving Parts

Proper operation, correct alignment, security, sealing, cleanliness, lubrication, adjustment,

tension, travel, condition, binding, excessive wear, cracking, corrosion, deformation, and
any other apparent damage.

B. Composite/Carbon Fiber Parts

CHAPTER 5-20: MAINTENANCE CIRRUS AIRPLANE MAINTENANCE MANUAL
SCHEDULED INSPECTION REPORT VISION SF50

4. Scheduled Inspection Report

Table 5-20-1 lists the tasks and intervals required for the SF50 scheduled maintenance program.
Operators may select one of three different maintenance programs:
• Block Maintenance Program: If the block maintenance program is selected, all tasks are
performed only when their scheduled interval becomes due. The intervals are listed in the
“Interval” column in terms of hours and years.
• Phased Maintenance Program: If the phased maintenance program is selected, tasks with
one- and two-year intervals are distributed equally into a number of smaller work packages
occurring throughout the two-year interval. In some cases, the first occurrence of a task
may be assigned to a phase occurring prior to its block maintenance interval, but all subse-
quent occurrences are scheduled at its block maintenance interval.
The objective of the Phased Maintenance Program is to distribute the maintenance workload
over time and shorten the length of each period of down-time. The overall result of a Phased
Maintenance Program is that the total amount of scheduled maintenance down-time can be
reduced over an aircraft’s maintenance cycle.
Two different phases maintenance programs have been defined:
• Phased Maintenance Program for operators with greater than 200 flight hours per year.
These are generally assumed to be 14 CFR 135 operators.
• Phased Maintenance Program for operators with 300 flight hours per year or less. These are
generally assumed to be 14 CFR 91 operators.
Some overlap in the number flight hours per year was deliberately built into the two different
phased programs. This is to accommodate the possibility of a particular 14 CFR 91 operator with
greater than 200 flight hours per year, or a particular 14 CFR 135 operator with less than 300 hours
per year.
All tasks with intervals greater than two years are performed at their block maintenance interval,
regardless of the maintenance program chosen.
