THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This chapter consists of five parts namely: 1) Introduction: 2) Statement of the

Introduction

ㅤㅤSocial media platforms have become an indispensable aspect of many people's


lives in the current digital era, especially senior high school students. Adolescents are
using social media platforms more frequently and engaging in behaviors like publishing,
liking, and sharing material due to the growing availability and accessibility of
cellphones and the internet. While social media has many advantages, such as the
ability to facilitate social connections and the exchange of knowledge, excessive use of
the platform has sparked worries about its impact on senior high school students'
wellbeing and academic performance.

ㅤㅤAccording to research by Kross et al. (2013), extended usage of social media is


linked to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. According to similar
findings, excessive use of social media can result in a social media disorder that is
marked by problematic behaviors and detrimental psychological effects (Van Den
Eijnden et al., 2018). According to these studies, seniors in high school who use social
media excessively may experience negative consequences to their mental health.

ㅤㅤAcademic performance is another important factor that is negatively impacted by


excessive social media use, in addition to mental health. (Junco, 2012) discovered a
negative association between academic accomplishment and social media use,
suggesting that students' grades suffer when they use social media more frequently.
(Lepp et al. 2014) provided more evidence in support of these findings by showing a
correlation between higher levels of academic anxiety and poorer GPAs among college

students who use their phones excessively, including for social media purposes. These
studies demonstrate the negative effects of excessive social media use on students'
academic performance.

ㅤㅤFurthermore, it has been demonstrated that excessive social media use lowers the
caliber of interpersonal connections. Because people frequently compare their lives to
the highlight reels posted on social media platforms, (Steers et al., 2014) discovered a
connection between greater social media use and depressed symptoms. According to
(Primack et al. 2017), young adults who use social media are less likely to engage with
people in person and are more likely to feel socially isolated. These results give rise to
worries regarding the possible effects of excessive social media use on senior high
school students' interpersonal interactions.

ㅤㅤFor the sake of its students' general wellbeing and academic achievement, Pacific
Southbay College, Inc. must address the negative impacts of excessive social media
usage among its senior high school students. In order to assist students in forming
healthy habits and responsibly controlling their use of social media, effective
interventions and preventive measures can be put into place by having a thorough
grasp of the unique difficulties and outcomes present in this educational setting.

ㅤㅤThe purpose of this study is to add to the body of knowledge by examining the
consequences of excessive social media use among senior high school students at
Pacific Southbay College, Inc. The study aims to offer significant insights that can assist
educational institutions, parents, and policymakers in promoting responsible social
media use and prioritizing the academic success and well-being of senior high school
students. This will be achieved by analyzing the distinct experiences and challenges
faced by students in this particular context.

Statement of the problem

ㅤㅤThe goal of this paper is to investigate the effects of excessive social media usage
on the academic performance, mental health, and interpersonal relationships of senior
high school students in Pacific Southbay College, Inc.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the effects of excessive social media usage on the academic
performance of senior high school students?

2. How does excessive social media usage impact the mental health of senior
high school students?

3. What are the effects of excessive social media usage on the interpersonal
relationships of senior high school students?

Theoretical Lens

ㅤㅤThis theoretical lens aims to investigate the psychological effects of senior high
school students' excessive use of social media. This lens integrates Social Comparison
Theory, Self-Determination Theory, and Fear of Missing Out Theory to better
understand how social comparisons, psychological need fulfillment, and FOMO
contribute to excessive social media use and its effects on senior high school students'
psychological health.

ㅤㅤAccording to Festinger's Social Comparison Theory (1954), people compare


themselves to others in order to determine their identities and assess their own worth.
Senior high school kids are constantly exposed to idealized representations of their
classmates' life via social media platforms, which provides a baseline for comparison.

ㅤㅤAccording to Vogel et al. (2014), a continual exposure to other people's highlight
reels might result in low self-esteem, poor self-evaluations, and psychological suffering.

ㅤㅤSelf-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) highlights the role of psychological
needs, including autonomy, competence, and relatedness, in motivation and well-being.
Overuse of social media can make it more difficult to meet these needs. Furthermore,
excessive social media use was linked to decreased levels of perceived competence
among senior high school students, according to a study by Koc et al. (2019). This
shows that students may become passive consumers of social media content rather
than participating in activities that foster personal growth and skill development, which
could negatively affect their sense of competence.

ㅤㅤAccording to Mayak Gupta and Aditya Sharma (2021), the worry of losing Out
(FoMO) Theory emphasizes the worry and anxiety people feel when they think they are
losing out on social chances or experiences. Excessive social media usage among
senior high school students is generally driven by the fear of losing out on events,
trends, and interactions within their peer group. Compulsive behavior, discontent, and
anxiety when offline can result from the ongoing urge to stay connected and be "in the
know" (Elhai et al., 2016).

ㅤㅤFurthermore, a study by (Przybylski et al. , 2013) discovered a link between higher


levels of FoMO and increased teenage social media use. Students who want to stay
connected to their online social networks and prevent feelings of loneliness may use
social media excessively out of fear of losing out.

ㅤㅤTo obtain a thorough knowledge of the psychological effects of senior high school
students' excessive use of social media, this theoretical lens is being utilized. This lens
attempts to shed light on the effects of excessive social media use on students'
motivation, self-esteem, well-being, and general psychological health by looking at the
factors of social comparisons, psychological need fulfillment, and fear of missing out. It
will aid in the creation of strategies and interventions aimed at reducing the harmful

impacts of excessive social media use and encouraging senior high school students to
engage in better online habits. This lens aims to offer insights that can help legislators,
parents, and educational institutions create suitable policies and support networks to
guarantee senior high school students' wellbeing in the digital era.

Scope and Delimitation

ㅤㅤThe study focused on senior high school students who excessively use social
media. The thirty respondents of this research are Senior High School students and
they are found in Pacific Southbay College, Inc. This study is conducted from January
2024 to January 2024.The respondents can be either male or female regardless of their
ages.Their responses will be recorded, analyzed and used as information to answer the
questions of the study.

ㅤㅤFactors such as name or other personal information of the respondents are not
included in this paper. Therefore, the research team did consider the present study as
flawlessly accurate.

Significance of the study

ㅤㅤAn investigation into senior high school students' excessive use of social media at
Pacific Southbay College, Inc. The purpose of this study is to investigate how students'
general development, mental health, and academic achievement are affected by
excessive use of social media. Through an analysis of the consequences of excessive
social media use, this study can help clarify the advantages and disadvantages of this
activity among seniors in high school.

For Students:
ㅤㅤFor students, this study is essential since it sheds light on the negative effects of
excessive social media use on their emotional and intellectual well-being. By educating
students about the possible drawbacks of overusing social media, we can empower

them to make wise choices about their online behavior. Improved academic
performance and general well-being can result from students using the study's findings
to better regulate their social media usage and strike a good balance between online
and offline activities.

For Researchers and Teachers:


ㅤㅤResearchers can benefit from this study since it adds to the body of evidence
already available about how social media affects students' lives. The findings of this
study can serve as a foundation for additional research in it and provide a framework for
the creation of effective treatments and strategies to manage excessive social media
usage among senior high school students. Teachers can also take advantage of the
knowledge gathered from this research by applying the conclusions to their instructional
strategies and creating educational initiatives that encourage students to use social
media responsibly.

For Future Researchers:


ㅤㅤThis study is important for scholars in the future who want to look at how social
media affects the younger generation. The results of this investigation can serve as a
point of reference and direction for next studies, enabling researchers to expand on
their knowledge and advance our comprehension of the subject. The knowledge
gathered from this research can also be used as a standard by which to compare and
contrast the results of other investigations, indicating possible directions for additional
research and analysis.

Definition of Terms

ㅤㅤBasically, in this study, we will be using technical terms to define and understand
the idea and concept of excessive use of social media among senior high school
students. These terms are essential in providing a clear visualization and
comprehensive understanding of the investigation.

Social Media:
ㅤㅤUser-generated content creation, sharing, and exchange, as well as user contact
and communication, are made possible by internet-based platforms or websites known
as social media. According to Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), these platforms give people
the chance to interact socially, communicate with one another, share information, and
express their ideas and opinions. Social media, as used in this study, refers to the
online communities that Pacific Southbay College, Inc. senior high school students use.

Social Media Addiction:


ㅤㅤThe excessive and compulsive use of social media platforms to the point where it
interferes with a person's everyday functioning, relationships, and general well-being is
referred to as social media addiction, also known as problematic social media use. A
person's excessive obsession with social media, unsuccessful attempts to reduce
usage, withdrawal symptoms when deprived of social media access, and detrimental
effects on other areas of their lives are all signs of social media addiction (Kuss &
Griffiths, 2017). Senior high school students should be especially aware of this issue
because, given their age and developmental stage, they may be more susceptible to the
emergence of addictive habits.

Senior High School Students:


ㅤㅤPeople who are enrolled in senior high school are known as senior high school
students; they usually range in age from 16 to 18 years old. Students in their senior year
of high school frequently utilize social media to interact with one another, get
information, and express themselves. They might, however, also be vulnerable to the

adverse impacts of excessive social media use, which can have an adverse influence
on their general well-being, interpersonal connections, and academic achievement.

Social Media

ㅤㅤSocial media has emerged as a powerful tool with positive implications across
various domains. Scholars have explored its positive impact on education, highlighting
the potential for improved learning experiences. Research by Junco, Heiberger, and
Loken (2011) indicates that social media platforms can be utilized for educational
purposes, fostering collaboration and engagement among students. This supports the
idea that social media can enhance educational outcomes by providing new avenues for
communication and knowledge sharing.

ㅤㅤBeyond education, social media plays a crucial role in fostering social connections
and community engagement. Ellison, Steinfield, and Lampe (2007) argue that platforms
like Facebook contribute positively to social capital, facilitating the maintenance of
relationships and the formation of new connections. The positive social impact of social
media is evident in its ability to bridge geographical gaps, allowing individuals to stay
connected with friends and family, fostering a sense of community.

ㅤ Despite its positive aspects, the negative implications of social media cannot be
overlooked. Excessive usage has been associated with various challenges, particularly
concerning mental health. Research by Primack et al. (2017) explores the link between
high social media use and depression among young adults, indicating the need for a

ㅤㅤIn evaluating the literature on social media's positive and negative aspects, it is
crucial to strike a balance between acknowledging its benefits and addressing potential
drawbacks. The positive impact on education and social connections should be
harnessed, while concurrently implementing measures to mitigate the risks associated
with excessive usage and negative online behaviors. As we navigate the evolving
landscape of social media, future research should focus on developing comprehensive
frameworks for digital literacy and responsible social media use, ensuring a holistic
understanding of its multifaceted impact.

Social Media Platforms

Twitter, and Snapchat are among the widely used platforms by various age groups,
including teenagers. According to Brooke and Monica (2021), the Pew Research Center
found that 81% of U.S. teens aged 13 to 17 use Instagram, highlighting its significance
among this demographic. These platforms offer unique opportunities for self-expression,
creativity, and social interaction among users.

ㅤㅤWhile social media platforms offer numerous benefits, the issue of social media
addiction has garnered attention due to its potential negative impact on individuals,
particularly teenagers. Recent research by Twenge and Campbell (2018) indicates a
concerning increase in the number of adolescents experiencing high levels of
depression and loneliness, potentially linked to excessive social media use.
Understanding the addictive nature of these platforms is crucial for developing
interventions that promote healthy online behaviors. Recognizing signs of addiction and
addressing them early can lessen adverse effects on mental health and well-being.

Social Media and Society

media, and sleep behaviors among senior high school students. The results
demonstrated an adverse correlation between elevated screen time, particularly before
bedtime, and disturbances in sleep. This investigation underscored the significance of
advocating for wise screen-time practices to reduce the potential harmful impacts on the
sleep quality of adolescents.

ㅤㅤAccording to Lee et al. (2022), measures were introduced to regulate social media
use among senior high school students. Their intervention included evaluating the
impact of educational programs and initiatives focused on digital literacy to encourage
responsible social media practices. The outcomes revealed favorable shifts in students'
awareness and behavior, indicating the promising effectiveness of specific interventions
in reducing the negative consequences associated with excessive social media usage.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the method of research used, respondents and sampling,
research instruments, data gathering procedure, the research locale, and the statistical
treatment of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers use a Descriptive Quantitative method as it concerns describing


variables. This method applies to this study since it is more accurate and has reliable
sources for the statistical treatment of data. Particularly, the study uses a descriptive
survey method to gather information.

Quantitative research is a systematic and structured empirical investigation


characterized by the collection and analysis of numerical data to explore patterns and
relationships within a target population (Gravetter & Forzano 2022). According to
Bhandari (2020) it can use to find patterns and means, make predictions, test causal
relationships, and generalize your results to larger populations.

According to Creswell (2023), the descriptive research design is a study that


describes the characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied. Primarily
used to gain an understanding of a group or phenomenon. This involves collecting data
through surveys, interviews, or observation.

Specifically, the purpose of this study is to investigate the positive and negative
effects of excessive social media use on high school students' in terms of academic
performance, interpersonal relationships, and general well-being

The researchers will be conducting the study at Pacific Southbay College in
General Santos City. The respondents will answer the survey questionnaires about ‘The
Effects of Excessive Social Media Usage’. This study is limited only to the senior high
school students of Pacific Southbay College in General Santos City.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study are those students who are enrolled in senior high
school of Pacific Southbay College in General Santos City. Those students are coming
from both grade 11 and 12 in different tracks, which is Humss with 10 sections and ABM
with 4 sections. Those students will be chosen by the researchers because they are
suitable and applicable to the study.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The researchers used a random sampling. Random Sampling is a part of the


sampling technique in which each sample has an equal probability of being chosen. A
sample chosen randomly is meant to be an unbiased representation of the total
population. This sampling technique will help us get an exact population size.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers study will employ survey questionnaires in Investigating THE


Effects of Excessive Social Media Usage of Senior High School Students in Pacific
Southbay College, Inc. The researchers formulate the survey questionnaires in
accordance with the problem of the study.

The researchers will be forwarding the preliminary drafts to their adviser for
comments and suggestions then after that to the panel of experts for their reliability and
validity.

The first part of the questionnaire consists of the effects of excessive social
media usage on the academic performance of senior high school students. The second
part, excessive social media usage impacts on the mental health of senior high school
students. Lastly, the effects of excessive social media usage on the interpersonal
relationships of senior high school students.

Moreover, the researchers use any devices like mobile phones, recording
devices, laptops that will be use to take pictures and recordings that will serve as
documentation. Aside from the survey questionnaires, laptops and computers are also
considered as major instruments for gathering information in the whole process of the
study. The information that the researchers will gather should be able to answer the
statement of the problems of the study.

To interpret the result for the Investigating the Effects of Excessive Social Media
Usage of Senior High School Students in Pacific Southbay College, Inc.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

This procedure will serve as a guide on how the researchers collect the data. The
researchers will formulate their own questionnaires wherein respondents should answer
during the conduct of the survey.
First, the researchers will request the master list of all senior high school
students to get the population size of respondents.
Second, the researchers will ask the senior high school head to have
permission to conduct.
Third, the researchers prepare the survey questionnaires to be answered by the
respondents.
Fourth, the researchers will distribute the survey questionnaires to the
respondents who are willing and available to answer the survey and repeatedly doing
the same to all tracks of senior high school both grade 11 and 12.

Fifth, the questionnaires will be retrieve by the researchers to start tallying the
gathered information.
Sixth, after tallying the gathered questionnaires the researchers forwarded the
data to the statistician to be evaluated and analyzed.
Lastly, the researchers ask the statistician for the result and interpretation of the
gathering data that will be present.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT

As soon as the researchers gather the data, they will be compiled, sorted,
organized and tabulated. They will be subjected to statistical treatment in order to
answer the statement of the problem.
