THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL

MEDIA IN THE ACADEMIC

ACIEVEMENT OF GRADE 10
INTRODUCTION
Social media is now one of the greatest needs in our daily lives
especially for the youths. It affects not only their work and
responsibilities inside the school but also inside the home.
Among the most frequent users of social media are the young
generation. They are the ones who are often on the leading-edge
of this space (Mayo Clinic,2022).
INTRODUCTION
Social media has many advantages to our lives and our world.
Most of the teens use social media for entertainment and some
use it to express their feelings on Facebook, Twitter and on
many more social media platforms.
The platforms can inform teenagers about current events, enable
them to interact across geographic barriers, and impart
knowledge on a range of topics, including healthy practices.
INTRODUCTION
However, despite the many advantages and benefits of social media,
it can also negatively affect teens. Sadly, our teenagers and young
adults have embraced social media use to the point where, if not
controlled or, it might have some very serious repercussions or very
severe effects on their general wellbeing.
It can have a detrimental impact on them by diverting their attention,
preventing them from sleeping, and exposing them to bullying,
rumors, unrealistic expectations of other people's lives, and peer
pressure.

REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
Netsweeper(2021) states that students are more connected than ever
before through social media, especially during these difficult times,
when they are physically distanced from their family, friends, and
peers.
Though Social media provides many benefits, such as giving students
the chance to express themselves creatively, learning opportunities,
and the chance to connect with others, social media can also have a
negative impact on students, both physically and mentally.
REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
According to netsweeper (2021), it is easy to become
addicted, and research shows that students who spend
too much time on social media can suffer from poor
sleep, eye fatigue, negative body image, depression,
anxiety, cyberbullying, and more.
REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
It’s important to remember that social media can never be a
replacement for real-world human connection. It requires in-person
contact with others to trigger the hormones that alleviate stress and
make you feel happier, healthier, and more positive. Ironically for a
technology that’s designed to bring people closer together, spending
too much time engaging with social media can actually make you
feel more lonely and isolated—and exacerbate mental health
problems such as anxiety and depression. (Robinson et al., 2023)
REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
According to Talaue et al., (2018), social networks becomes
an integral part of the students’ full life, took up most of their free
time. Undoubtedly, in social networks, there are also things useful
for the development of the students. In addition, communication
with peers through social networks can help a student socialize,
find new friends, discuss with them issues related to studies. Thus,
it can be concluded that social media have a dual impact on student
achievement, and it is necessary to approach adolescents' use of
social networks with ultimate responsibility.
