Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Today the standard living of a person is improved

through technology like machines, gadgets and etc.

Technology that is making influences with regard to

information sharing and communication are the social

media networks. Social media is any website that allows

social interaction. Social media is growing rapidly

throughout the world. More adults and teenagers are

joining sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter,

Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn that are called social

media platforms in order to interact with friends, family,

and strangers. The introduction of social media has

changed the world in many ways. It affects each individual

in different ways. Today it can be used as a very helpful

tool in changing a person’s life, but at the same time

cause such conflicts which can negatively impact a person.

Most people believe that social messaging is more of a

benefit than a consequence, but using social media can

actually be harmful. Social media is something most kids,

teens, and even some adults are using all the time. It has

become a part of our generation’s lives. Having people on

their phones all day long is not only disappointing, but

also damaging. Instead of talking to someone face-to-face

and hanging out, people prefer just texting or going on a

social network. For some people understanding a life

without social media is near impossible. Using social

media can have some adverse effects such as: it causes

cyber bullying, it can compromise education, and it could

have an effect on social skills. As we’ve been observed

most of students now are addicted on social media

networks. They spend most of their time on using different

social media platforms instead of doing their

responsibility in their academic activity. This kind of

scenario is not merely observation but a common problem

that we are encountering today. We want as researchers to

address the perceived negative effects of social media

platforms exposure among Senior High School Grade 12

Science and Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

students of University of Cagayan Valley.

Conceptual Framework

Social media has changed lots of former procedures

in this modern generation like expanding the capacity of

usage of social media networking sites. Most of people

today do not know the appropriate use of social media. In

this study seeks to assess the exposure of the Senior

High School Grade-12 Science and Technology, Engineering

and Mathematics students of the University of Cagayan

Valley to social media platforms and its influence to

their academic performance for the first semester of the

school year 2017-2018.The research findings and

recommendations could be adopted and implemented to

benefit the respondents in exposure to social media

platforms and to address the perceived negative effect of

social media exposure. Even though the exposure of the

respondents to social media platforms those not affect

their academic performance but still there is need to

remind our self always for us to know our limitations to

maintain our academic performance or to improved more.
