Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Past studies have found that students who spend more time on

social media sites are likely to demonstrate poor academic

performance. This is because they spend time chatting online and

making friends on social media sites instead of reading

books.Social Media platforms are a major factor that are leading

to distraction and hindrance of mind. These days students tend to

lose their focus from studying and rather enjoy browsing on Social

Media. All of this leads to wastage of time without learning

anything from it.A 2016 study of more than 450 teens found that

greater social media use, nighttime social media use and

emotional investment in social media — such as feeling upset

when prevented from logging on — were each linked with worse

sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety.Reduced academic

performance is one of the most important consequences of social

networking overuse for students. The results of a study on

medical students showed that students who used social networks

and internet more than average had a poor academic

achievement and low level of concentration in the classroom.

Because of spending time on their social medias they forget about

of their school activities. They're giving more importance on their

social media than their Academic Performance.Gilbert M. Talaue,

Ali AlSaad, Naif AlRushaidan, Alwaleed AlHugail and Saad

AlFahhad social media is the collective of online communications

channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction,

content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications

dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social

bookmarking, social curation, and wikis are among the different

types of social media. Some prominent examples of social media

are facebook, twitter, google+, Wikipedia, linkedin, Reddit, and

penterestl. The use of social media in education provides students

with the ability to get more useful information, to connect with

learning groups and other educational systems that make

education convenient. Social network tools afford students and

institutions with multiple opportunities to improve learning

method. In school, the use of online platforms such as school

website will give students the right access to quality information

about the school environment, departments, faculties, rules, and

regulations. It has been observed that social media has a wider

and faster means of circulating information not only to the

students of an institution but also to the generality of the public.

As we can notice, most students do not need libraries and books

to do their assignments, since internet is available. Social media

have a dual impact on student achievement, and it is necessary to

approach adolescents' use of social networks with ultimate

responsibility. In no case should we forget about the negative

consequences that excessive social infatuation could have.

Institutions should focus on making pleasant things useful -

promoting social networks as a tool not only for communication

and entertainment but also for learning. Social networks should

allow their users to voluntarily restrict attendance on certain days,

for example, to students during a session. Finally, students

themselves must realize all the potential harm from excessive use

of social networks, and responsibly approach the learning process

and academic results.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers aimed to determined if there is a

effect on using social media to the academic performance of

grade 10 students in Can-avid National High School

1. To what extent would student addictiveness to social network

influence their academic performance?

2. How was the use of social media influence the academic

performance of the students?

3. Is there gender difference in the student’s usage of social media

network?

4. What are the academic performance of the respondents?

Theoretical Framework

The theories considered most appropriate

for this study are; social information processing theory and media

equation theory. Social information processing theory explains

online information. The theory was developed in 1992 by Joseph

Waither( Asemah 2011:219).Social information processing theory

is an interpersonal communication theory wich suggests the

online interpersonal relationship development might require

more time to develop the face to face relationship,(d) but when

developed, it has the influence as face to face communication.

This means, the more students use social media the more

influence their disposition to studies, gevin the fact that friends
