Abstract
Technology is booming rapidly from year to year, and the younger generations
are the ones caught in this rapid change. The use of social networking by high school
students has become increasingly relevant to their academic lives. Smartphones have
added good potential by enabling an increase in the use of social networking and in the
their performance in school has been affected. Being online for a long time and being
able to access different information from different sources at the same time could cause
information overload. Students could face problems in filtering the information they
receive and they might found it difficult to decide which sources they can trust.
Therefore, this study was carried out with the aim of examining the impact of use of
observation) in order to explore the influence on students of social networking using their
smartphones. The purpose of this article is to assess the negative impact of the social
networking among Camba High School Grade 10 students on their school performance.

CHAPTER 1
Introduction
According to Daniel Nations, social networking refers to the use of social media.
If you're participating in social networking, it means you’re using social media or also
known as social networks. One of the most famous apps nowadays are instagram,
facebook, and twitter, to connect with family, friends, and other people who share your
interests.
According to the recent survey of Statista Research Department, it shows that the
biggest Facebook user group were people who are about 18-24 years old which makes up
the 18% of total Facebook users worldwide. Among these 18-24 year old people are
mostly students.
And the use of social media among students has reached high level and has
affected their study time, poor grammar, and wrong spellings. (Ndaku, 2013) They spend
much of their time on social networks than in their academic undertakings and it has

According to Cassidy, Griffin, Manolovutz, Shen and Turney in 2011, students use
desktop computers, laptops, E-readers, tablets, and cell phones in their daily basis to
actively engage in social networking, text messaging, blogging, content sharing, online
In the Philippines, social media use has become a very common feature of most
Filipino’s daily lives. The data of the Social Media and Digital Stats in the Philippines
from Third Team Media in 2015 shows that the Philippines remains as the “Social Media
Capital of the World”. Out of more than 100 million population in the country, 44 million
are Internet users and 40 million of them are active social media users. Recently, the
2016 data on Social Media and Digital Stats in the Philippines, the percentage of social
media penetration has increased from 40% in 2015 to 47% in 2016. In the article by
Digital Marketing Philippines from the 40 million active social media users, 65% of them
are teenagers and young adults, and 81% of them access their accounts daily.
2014, the increasing percentage of usage of social networking sites largely affect a
student's academic performance. Students with lower grades are frequent user of Social
In additon, Chen & Bryer, 2010 says that despite the popularity of social media
for personal use only a low percentage of students and faculty use them for academic
practice. Online social networking (OSN) sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace,
Paul, Baker, Cochran, in 2012 wrote an article named effect of online social
statistically significant negative relationship between time spent by students on OSN and
impact academic performance. As time spent on social networking sites increases, the
academic performance of the students is seen to deteriorate. This ties in well with the
findings presented in Kirschner and Karpinski (2010), which reveal that over-
involvement or obsession with social networking by students can have negative impacts
on academic performance.
Moreover, the study of Karpinski (2009) shows that users who spend more time
on SNSs like Facebook spend less time in studying. Hence, school authorities are one of
the primary people who oppose it’s use particularly in schools, which is the reason why
they usually ban it during class hours. The teachers and administrators are likewise
affected because of these negative implications. Many schools have opted for strict
restrictions on SNSs usage in campuses amid concerns about safety, privacy and
confidentiality, and lack of knowledge about how best to ensure its appropriate use.
Dominican university stated that students who use social network have significantly
lower grade point averages (GPAs) than those who do not. They also mentioned that
among various unique distractions of every single generation, Social Networking Sites
media users often time experience poor performance academically. Similarly, Englander
et al., (2010), posit that social media is negatively associated with academic performance
The study of Lewis et al. (2008) found out that the influence of these SNSs
continues to get increasingly more pervasive, making actual and virtual realities almost
indistinguishable. Students are talking about the social networking related stuffs almost
every single day; thus it would be a surprise if any student never got involved with
Facebook, Twitter or any other SNSs nowadays. Moreover, students are paying more
attention towards these social networking activities rather than utilizing their
Jennifer Walsh, lead author of the new study released by researchers at The
Miriam Hospital’s Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine in 2013 said that,
students who spent the most time using social media had “fewer academic behaviors,
such as completing homework and attending class, lower academic confidence and more
problems affecting their school work, like lack of sleep and substance use.”
Conceptual Framework
social networking that may affect the students’ academic performance are: access to
internet; use of social networking sites; their perception on social networking; and their
frequency of using it. With these variables, the present study will identify the impact of
using social networking to the academic performance of the respondents and will be able

research designs tend to be more flexible, allowing you to adjust your approach based on
what you find throughout the research process. It involves measuring variables, finding
about social media on the respondents through interview and survey in order to make this
study more reliable and valid. This type of qualitative research is called

The respondents of this study will be the Grade Ten students of Camba High
School. There is a total of 15 random students who will participate in this study.
respondents will be asked using an interview guide containing the questions constructed
by the researchers. The students should answer honestly according to what is being asked
The researchers will collect the needed data through the use of in-depth interview
and its administration in the selected faculties. This study will be conducted during the
last quarter of the school year in Camba High School, Arayat, Pampanga, for two days.
The respondents will have a one-on-one interview with the researcher in-charge to gather
