ABSTRACT

In this study, students in Grade 10 at one of the Langkaan II National High Schools had

their study habits evaluated. In the modern world, social media is a crucial communication

advancement, yet has put many pupils' cultural ideals at danger. This inquiry is focused on

undergraduate students' study habits since negative influences are becoming more

prevalent. The study strategy utilized was a descriptive survey with a quantitative

approach that included conducting oral interviews and distributing questionnaires. As

opposed to that, 100 more students were face-to-face questioned in a different way and had

their answers recorded. Additionally, some professors from the same school were

questioned, and their comments were recorded for later research. This study was

influenced by the uses and satisfaction hypothesis. According to this notion, consumers of

all media are not passive viewers but rather active participants who always choose the

media, they will consume depending on their own personal goals. The findings showed that

a large number of students utilize social media, particularly Facebook, Instagram, and

Twitter, and that they are increasingly spending quality time on these platforms even

during class. The results of this study point to the need for timed-off software to be

implemented to regulate students' usage of social media since it may have a detrimental

influence on their study habits and academic advancement. The school administration

would greatly benefit from this study since it has highlighted the serious risks associated

with pupils using social media without supervision and the necessity to put safeguards in

place to prevent any potential harm.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Long range informal communication destinations (SNS) is a web 2.0 instrument that

incorporates Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and so on. Long range

informal communication has turned into an omnipresent part of human connection with the

presentation and broad use of the web and PDAs (Saini et al., 2020). Web-based

entertainment are quickly expanding lately and have become progressively engaged with

essentially all aspects of life by changing their way of life and affecting their prosperity (Raza

et al., 2020). The accessibility of effectively available data and the quick advancement of long

range interpersonal communication locales (SNSs) have shown that the globe is little and

open. The critical effect of this interconnection is because of a change in the learning and

sharing climate, which, generally, is absent in homerooms shows the benefits of SNSs in

permitting understudies to impart and interface with a bigger crowd beyond the study hall

(Valdez et al., 2020). Expanded long range informal communication destinations (SNS) like

Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, have changed the manner in which individuals associate,

especially among secondary institutions. Consequently, scholarly establishments are quick

to help web-based entertainment as a learning stage (Khairi and Ghani, 2019). Interpersonal

interaction Locales (SNS) are turning into the essential method for correspondence among

understudies, particularly at more elevated levels of instruction, incorporating

6

communications with partners, connections with educators, cooperation, cooperative

learning, and understudy execution (Alaslani and Alandejani, 2020). Informal organizations

have turned into a fundamental piece of understudies' regular daily existences and perhaps

an important instrument for supporting connections and keeping away from depression.

There are clashing discoveries of the relationship between the use of long-range

interpersonal communication destinations (SNS) and sensations of depression (Agadullina et

al., 2021). The most well-known web-based entertainment channels used during emergency

correspondence were accounted for to be informal community destinations. (Kutoglu Kuruç

and Opiyo, 2020).

The use of social media has met a great growth since the increase evolution in internet

technology. They become very popular and play an important role in all domains of our lives

especially in education. For this reason, in the last decade, researchers pay more attention

for the use and the impact of social media on the educational operation. Authors prove that

the use of social media plays several roles such as sharing ideas between educational staff,

aiding students to build their own communities in order to collaborate with each other,

facilitating the art of learning and reaching out to the students. (Ali Sahiuny, 2018)

In this age of technology, people's daily lives, especially those of students, are also changing

and getting better as technology advances. Numerous social networking applications have

also been developed as a result of the technology. Students frequently use popular social

media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Students' day-to-day lives are

significantly impacted by social media, particularly their study habits. Students' study habits
7

are significantly influenced by their use of social media. However, the findings of this study

will demonstrate that students' study habits, including communication and access to

resources, are significantly influenced by social networks; furthermore, the specialists will

likewise show the benefits and disservices of the informal organizations to the review

propensities for the understudies; Additionally, it will demonstrate the distinction between

social media and social networking.

8

Background of the Study

Literature Review

SNS has been a region in which scientists and specialists of various fields generally study.

A portion of the connected articles are as follow. Person to person communication Site is

broadly utilized effectively by advanced education study. For example, "Person to person

communication locales (SNS) are generally utilized among understudies, and their mix in

advanced education is expanding across the years" (Al-Dheleai et al., 2020).

Understudies in advanced education utilized Facebook to stay in contact with their

lifelong companions and chat on various themes more effectively with their web-based

companions than genuine companions (Butt, 2020). "Informal organization locales (SNSs)

are the fundamental specialized apparatuses among understudies, particularly at more

elevated levels of training, incorporating communications with partners, connections with

educators, commitment, agreeable learning, and understudy execution (Alaslani and

Alandejani, 2020).

Association, cooperation, collaboration, and conversation are fundamental pieces of

trainings, and they prove to be useful with the accessibility of SNS. Many examinations

concur that SNS has its main role in association and coordinated effort among understudies.

Deepthy and Shalini (2019) uncovered that college understudies utilize long range

interpersonal communication destinations to grow data, associate with companions,

9

interface with their cohorts for online review, examine serious public issues, observe films,

and so forth. Online stages empower scholastics to interface with others and disperse their

exploration. Insightful character stages have advantages, amazing open doors and

proposition opportunities for creating scholarly library support (Radford et al. 2020).

Hiele et al. (2019), shed light on the significance of understudies' gathering cooperation

utilizing person to person communication locales like virtual entertainment and

interpersonal interaction destinations as instruments for a learning climate. Relational

interconnectivity, amusement worth, and social upgrade esteem get from the understudies'

cooperation in person-to-person communication locales through which they experience

social advantage and social over-burden (Raza et al. 2020).

SNSs are found to decidedly affect acquiring new abilities and scholarly execution. Khairi

and Ghani (2019) uncovered that the time spent on SNS affects scholarly execution and

indicator conduct adversely affects scholastic execution.

SNS is a suitable device that upholds understudies' feeling of social presence, adding to

better learning and scholastic execution" (Aldheleai et al., 2020).

There is a Positive relationship betweenness understudies' review propensities and the

degree of SNS usage. The concentrate additionally uncovered that the more understudies

give themselves to their review propensities, the higher the degree of SNS usage (Valdez et

al., 2020).
10

Palla and Sheik (2020) uncovered that understudies utilize online entertainment

organizing locales for scholarly purposes, which is a magnificent consider working on their

scholastic abilities and grades. Instructors should urge their understudies to utilize virtual

entertainment organizing locales for sporting and instructive purposes. In their review,

Azlan and Yunus (2020) found the respondents answer certifiably to the utilization of SNSs

in further developing English composing abilities. SNSs are laden with downsides/concerns,

particularly connected with disarray, for-benefit models, and reputational risk. There is

likewise investigation which discovered that gamble of utilizing SNS.

The gamble can be of physical and psychological wellness and online protection. Squeeze

et al. (2014) expressed that there are advantages of utilizing long range informal

communication destinations and risks related with interpersonal interaction. Such dangers

can be reduced utilizing the techniques accessible at work.

A massive contrast was found among the character qualities of understudy's utilization

of SNS and dangers, while no distinction was seen toward SNS benefits (Ahmed et al., 2020).

The pessimistic effects of SNS incorporate abusing individual data, an interruption from

research/tasks/vocations exercises, hacked account, no survey of security settings for

controlling famous postings, and consume an excess of time were distinguished as the most

extreme impacts of web-based entertainment and SNSs (Naqvi, 2019).

11

The gamble of utilizing SNS might incorporate individuals' physical, mental, and

profound wellbeing (Saini et al., 2020). Seen pressure has been viewed as a gamble factor for

dangerous long range interpersonal communication site (SNS) use (Hou et al., 2019).

“An elevated degree of informal communication use and possibly improper mentalities

towards impressive skill were found among drug store understudies’’ (Lobby et al., 2013).

Hormes (2016) found a connection between overabundance or maladaptive SNS use and

issues connected with liquor in youthful grown-ups.

Meanwhile, understudies likewise showed that absence of safety and security are the

fundamental worries of person-to-person communication locales, a larger part of them

utilized their genuine names and photographs in their profiles (K and Sumitha, 2011).

“There are many benefits of utilizing person to person communication locales and their

threats joined with long range informal communication and such risks can be rebuilt

utilizing the techniques accessible in work” (Deepthy and Shalini, 2019).

Then again, the discoveries too showed that both capacities to focus (p-value=0.036) and

using time effectively (p-value=0.037) affect scholastic execution, considering that time spent

on SNS was added as intervening variable (Khairi and Ghani, 2019). Subsequently, it very

well may be reasoned that SNS is a fundamental device for schooling in this web ers;

meanwhile, there is likewise an adverse consequence related with SNS.

12

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

Given the recently referenced instructive test and assumption, a gathering of Asian

specialists met up cooperatively to propose a full-scale level hypothesis called interest-driven

maker (IDC) hypothesis. The primer work giving an outline of IDC hypothesis and featuring

its starting point with some set of experiences was distributed in 2018 (Chan et al. 2018). As

per IDC hypothesis, when driven by interest, understudies can be taken part in the making

of information (thoughts and antiques). By rehashing this interest-driven creation process in

their day-to-day learning schedules, understudies will foster twenty-first century abilities,

structure a propensity for creation, and succeed in learning.

Two principal hypotheses basic a few pessimistic feelings like fatigue and uneasiness are

over-excitement and under-feeling. In this way, what students feel out of their contribution

in web-based entertainment may be coordinated toward pessimistic feelings because of the

animating climate of online entertainment. This invigorating climate causes students to

depend excessively, and invest a lot of energy, on informal community or use them

fanatically. Subsequently, they could feel restless or discouraged. Given the universality of

web-based entertainment, these pessimistic feelings can be supplanted with good feelings in

the event that students become mindful of the mental impacts of informal communities. With

respect to affordances of informal organization for students, they can make the most of the

expected affordances of these organizations like working on their education, widening their

relational abilities, or upgrading their distance learning amazing open doors.

Statement of the Problem

Online entertainment came up because of progression in innovation. It is too critical to

understudies since it assists them with trading thoughts, sentiments, individual data, pictures

and recordings. The utilization of online entertainment by understudies is additionally very

educative and instructive.

Sadly, it appears to be that the utilization of online entertainment by understudies has

assumed control over the review propensity for understudies in optional schools.

Understudies invest the majority of their energy in the online entertainment stage to the

detriment of perusing their books. This has made interruption and absence of fixation from

concentrates the vast majority of the time by understudies.

Online entertainment has carried numerous positive ramifications to human life like

making the association of millions of individuals from everywhere the world conceivable as

it additionally has its negative qualities like understudies burning through the majority of

their opportunity to visit, some are acquainted with porn, assessment negligence,

downloading frightful pictures at web-based entertainment which has added to the lessening

ethics of young people.

The aftereffect of the utilization of web-based entertainment in schools appears to create

poor scholastic execution in inside and outside assessment negligence and poor perusing

society which might influence their review propensity.

15

Yet, whether online entertainment use influence the auxiliary understudies concentrate

on propensity is not settled as of yet consequently the requirement for the review.

The aim of this study seeks to ascertain the impact of Social Network use on students in

Grade 10 at Langkaan II National High School for the Academic Year 2022–2023:

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

Overview/Introduction

The primary emphasis of this research was on how Grade 10 students used social

networking sites to affect their study practices as seen in how everyone in the class

experienced each aspect's consequences. This study is based on the hypothesis that frequent

use of prevalent social networking sites has detrimental effects on a large number of pupils.

We are especially interested about the factors that have a favorable or negative impact on

their personal curricular activities.

The use of philosophical methodologies like hands-on visibility (being reliant entirely on

social networks, using it as a passage for gaining additional knowledge, rectifying one's

perception about particular educational matters, communicating with other individuals

with regard to educational endeavors, and keeping a journal with all their learnings using

social networking sites) is also considered.

Additionally, group awareness (educating those who are unaware of how to use social

media without getting hooked to it or excessively preoccupied with it to the point where it

can influence an individual's academic performance, fostering a sense of community within

an educational institution collaborating towards a specific objective, enhancing students'

25

understanding of what it takes to use social media effectively, as well as offering an

encouraging framework for preparing social media usage in institutions of learning) can

help to lessen the negative patterns a person may exhibit when using social networking

websites.

The following were the three research questions and related hypotheses:

Research question number 1 – What are the various social network commonly accessed by

secondary students of Langkaan II National High School?

The hypothesis was that Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok are the most popular

social networking platforms among students at Langkaan II National High School in

Grade 10.

Research question number 2 – What is the level of utilization of social network among

Grade 10 learners of Langkaan II National High School?

Total School Hours / Total Available Hours yields the utilization rate (%).

As it is a convenient way to find answers without exerting effort to evaluate and study, it

was hypothesized that the majority of Grade 10 students from Langkaan II National High
26

School spend more time on online networking sites than using reputable books as their

primary sources when it comes to learning and doing school works.

Research question number 3 – What sort of study habits do Grade 10 learners of Langkaan

II National High School exhibit?

The premise was that Langkaan II National High School Garde 10 students would

experience social network misuse more frequently than any other demographic. This is

owing to the reality that they are drawn to these websites when they are studying or

looking up course material on the internet, which causes them to become distracted from

their task and waste time.

27

Research Design

The researchers employed a Quantitative design in their study, which employed a

Descriptive Design of research. The study's respondents were Grade 10 learners from

Langkaan II National High School. To ensure a representative sample of pupils, the

researchers chose 100 respondents at random from the Junior High School department to

serve as the study's sample population. Survey forms were utilized by the researchers to

collect data.

Research Locale

This study will be carried out at R5, CHRV 1 (DASMARIÑAS) School using Grade 10

students as the participants. The institution of higher learning is located in CHRV

Subdivision. City of Dasmariñas, Lungsod ng Cavite, Cavite; Langkaan II. In order to

ascertain how social media affects students' study habits and academic performance, the

researchers have chosen the aforementioned location. As a result, the school, the

administration, and the Langkaan II National High School teachers will be assisted in

developing and conceptualizing various strategies that will increase students' academic

motivation.
28

Population and Sampling

The graduating class of Langkaan II National High School will make up the sample for

the research. Academic Year 2022–2023, commencing with pupils in grade 10, totaling 100.

The study's participants or subjects will be the whole population. The table below shows

the distribution of responders by year-level.

GRADE 10 NO. OF STUDENTS

FEMALE 50

MALE 50

The population has been divided into groups according to age and gender through

stratified random sampling, which is used in this study.

29

Respondents of the Study

Students from Langkaan II National High School Garde 10 served as the study's

respondents. Overall, 100 students from ten different sections answered our survey. Since

they were the ones who were impacted by the aforementioned effects, the respondents were

Grade 10 students from the sections named: Aguinaldo, Garcia, Laurel, Macapagal,

Magsaysay, Marcos, Osmena, Quezon, Quirino, and Roxas. In addition, every one of the

pupils can relate to the study's subject matter. The researchers also want to inform each

student in Grade 10 about multiple adverse consequences of social networking platforms.

30

Research Instrument

The researchers will utilize an overview instrument to gather the information and data

expected to finish and emerge this task. All through the advancement of the information

assortment instrument, the scientists led requests and meetings with specialists. Following

that, the analysts tried the figured-out poll on one more populace with similar attributes as

the objective respondents for unwavering quality and distinguished regions for

development. The finished poll is comprised of different segments that will gather

information in different ways.

The review survey was the examination instrument utilized by the analyst. This system

was utilized by the scientist to demonstrate and support the review. The overview poll was

made by the researchers in view of the review's subject and issue portrayal. To get input

from respondents, the specialist utilized a review rating scale/survey.

In terms of respondents' segment profile, scholarly way of behaving, and the effect

of involving virtual entertainment in the scholarly execution of the respondent.

31

Ethical Considerations

Moral Contemplations can be indicated as one of the main pieces of the exploration.

Expositions might try and be ill-fated to disappointment in the event that this part is

absent.

As per Bryman and Ringer (2007) The accompanying ten focuses address the main

standards connected with moral contemplations in papers.

The following moral standards were established during the research period:

• Participants in research never experience any kind of damage.

• Students' welfare and dignity were always maintained.

• It is of utmost importance to respect study participants' dignity.

• Before the study begins, the subjects provide their full permission.

• The confidentiality of study participants is protected.

• The research guarantees the anonymity of all participants, including people and

organizations.

• The researcher secured the students' consent to use their true identities in the

research report, and the research data remained private throughout the study.

• The affiliations that are considered for this study have nothing to do with any

conflicts of interest. There should never be any disagreements.

32

• It is prohibited to misrepresent or overstate the goals and objectives of this study.

• All research-related communications are conducted in an open and sincere manner.

• Avoiding false information of any kind and biased reporting of main data results is

advised.
33

Data Gathering Procedure

The settled poll will be circulated among respondents. Preceding the organization of the

review, the scientists will tie down authorization from the school chief to lead overview

among secondary students. The particular guides of each level will likewise be educated

with respect to the study and will be requested the help with the conveyance and recovery

of the survey to and from the respondents. The specialists will make sense of the reason for

the study and will talk about the substance of the instrument, as well as the cycle on the

most proficient method to achieve the survey. The term of overseeing the review will be one

day.

The researchers will involve the rate and recurrence as a device in the examination and

translation to information to be assembled. The equation in getting the rate and recurrence

is represented beneath:

F
P= x 100 Where:

P stands for Percentage;

N F stands for Frequency, and lastly;
N stands for the entirety of the
Population.
34

Data Analysis

The survey contains three types of data: information on people's behaviors, information

about people's perceptions, and viewpoints. These statistics are often discussed in terms of

knowledge, perceptions, habits, and demographics. The survey approach was used to

examine this data through the use of papers and an online survey tool called Google Forms.

Statistics that were linear and qualitative were examined using statistical techniques that

were descriptive. Both percentage and frequency data were used to display this. For data

that is categorical, connections between the variables that are dependent and independent

were evaluated using the Chi-square Test. Additionally, it was employed to draw

distinctions among populations at risk levels that are high and low. The significance

threshold was set at 0.05 (p=0.05).
