CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the
background of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the
study,and the scope and delimitation of the study.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Since the launch of technologies different social media platforms and apps are
popular now. They introduced users to digital communication through email,
bulletin board messaging, and real-time online chatting. This gave rise to the
earliest social media networks, beginning with the short-lived Six Degrees
profile uploading service in 1997. This service was followed in 2001 by
Friendster. Social media usage by students is so rampant recently because of
easy access to devices such as smart phones, i-phones, black berry, tablets, i-pad
and laptops which are connected to the internet. Addiction to the usage of social
media has extremely increased in recent times. The perils of its effects on the
academic performance of the over-involved students are disturbing. Academic
performance which is depicted by the grades of students is a great concern
student that spends excessive time on social networks become dependent on it
and it is believed that their academic performance diminishes proportionately. It
is perceived that school grades will suffer when spending too much time on
social sites such as Facebook, twitter and 2go as valuable study time is lost.
(Kubey, 2001). These therefore necessitate the study of the impact of social
network usage on academic performance of secondary school students in
English language.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general problem is determining the THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE 12 STUDENTS OF LIMAY SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:


I. Age
II. Gender
2. Does Social media affects the academic performance of the students?
3. How does Social Media Affects the academic performance of the grade 12
students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY-

Future Researchers.The findings of the study will serve as a reference material


and a guide for future researchers who wish to conduct the same

study or any study related to. The study focused on explaining how social media
affects the lives and academic performance of youth. Moreover, the results of

The study will be beneficial for the following:


Respondents. The respondents will have an awareness of how social media
affects our lives. also know the importance of using it responsibly.

Teachers. The results of the study will help the teachers provide encouragement
to think of new ideas that will give proper information to the students.

Parents .Parents will help their children with discipline and it will be safe for their
children.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION-

PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE 12 STUDENTS OF LIMAY SENIOR
HIGH SCHOOL”

This study focused on how social media affects the lives and academic
performance of grade 12 students in the school year 2021–2022. The respondents
of the study will be composed of 20 students. The results of this study are
applicable only to the respondents of this study and should not be used by
anyone without the permission of the researcher. The researchers considered
working on this study to see if there was an effect on young people, to assess the
effectiveness of mentoring youth about social media and how it affects the lives
and performance of everyone belonging to the youth.
