Chapter 1

Introduction

Social media usage by students is so rampant recently because of easy access to

devices such as smart phones, i-phones, black berry, tablets, i-pad and laptops which are

connected to the internet. Addiction to the usage of social media has extremely increased

in recent times. The perils of its effects on the academic performance of the over-involved

students are disturbing. Academic performance which is depicted by the grades of

students is a great concern student that spends excessive time on social networks

become dependent on it and it is believed that their academic performance diminishes

proportionately. It is perceived that school grades will suffer when spending too much

time on social sites such as Facebook, twitter and 2go as valuable study time is lost.

(Kubey, 2001). These therefore necessitate the study of the impact of social network

usage on academic performance of secondary school students in English language.

Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create

content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Because of its ease of

use, speed and reach, social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and

setting trends and agenda in topics that range from the environment and politics to

technology and the entertainment industry (Asur and Huberman, 2010). In the last ten

years, the online world has changed dramatically, thanks to the invention of social media,

young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and

videos at a truly astonishing rate. Seventy-three percent of wired American teens now

use social media websites (Oberst, 2010). Martn (2008), and Lusk, (2010) share the same
concept of social media. To them, social media is the use of Facebook, blogs, twitter, my

space and linked in for the purpose of communication, sharing photos as well as videos.

However, for the purpose of this study social media is captured within the use of

internet through facebook, whatsapp, twitter, skype, myspace as well as yahoo

messenger for communication sharing of ideas, sharing of photos and videos by users.

What started out as a hobby for some computer literate people has become a social norm

and way of life for people from all over the world (boyd 2007). Teenagers and young

adults have especially embraced these sites as a way to connect with their peers, share

information, reinvent their personalities, and showcase their social lives (boyd, 2007).

Different researchers have conducted research to ascertain the influence of social media

on users; for example, moon (2011) in a study on “impact of Facebook on undergraduate

academic performance, averred that social media have negative impact on students.

According to the result, the more students use Facebook, the more it affects their

academic performance.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Literature

According to O’Keeffe GS and Clarke-Pearson K [1], social media impacted more

in negative side. It includes accessing inappropriate contents without understanding the

privacy policies. They also said that after the introduction of social media, there is more

online harassment and cyberbullying. Ahn J [2] while doing research presented a theory

known as “Signaling Theory”. According to her theory, an individual while trying to make

himself/herself popular adds so many unknown users as his/ her friend, and this is how

an individual-compromises their own trust and privacy. Rideout V [3] said that the youth

is spending more time on social media just for entertainment purpose. She told that an

American child on average spends 7-8 hours a day, just for entertainment and usually

multi-task between different social networks they use. Pardo A [4] has made an effort to

explain social media’s importance in student’s life. He said that such platforms allow

students to communicate with each other for sharing information and teachers as well.

Pardo states that such kind of interactions are necessary for people to learn new things.

Cain J and Chretien K [5] introduced a new term “interprofessional education”. It is

defined as when different individuals come together on a single platform to share

knowledge which leads to improved and better understanding as they are learning from

each other’s experiences. El-Badawy TA and Hashem Y [6] in their research concluded

that social media has no relationship with student’s academic performance. And there is

no impact (positive or negative) on student’s academic routine. According to Tariq W

and Mehboob M [7], social media is ruining the future and carrier of students. It distracts
students from their studies. Further on, they analyzed the data collected from a survey

that there is a very large number users using social media with multiple IDs (real and

fake one). Lastly, they said that in Pakistan there are no such laws for social networking

sites to be followed. Kalia G [8] in her research paper concluded that the students

should be engaged on a social platform with each other to learn better and more.

Teachers should help kids to understand ‘what social media is?’ and its fair use. Finally

she said that social media is an entertainment world but it can also be used for

educative and professional purposes. Shahjahan ATM and Chisty KU [9] came to the

conclusion that the overall effect of social media on teenagers is negative. Because of

addiction to social platforms, students usually get low grades. Parents are not aware of

their children’s social accounts and their policies, which affect them later on. The

teenager lack confidence and try to avoid face-to- face communications. Siddiqui S and

Singh T [10] discussed both the positive and negative aspects of social media. Students

can make a group of their class on any social platform where they can discuss and

express themselves. They can share useful information by using that specific platform.

They can explore the opportunities for their future. But it also distract students from their

academics. Teenagers are not completely aware of the terms and policies and that

social platform. And they misuse it by creating fake accounts for fun purposes and later

on get addicted to it.

Staying connected, making friends, and reading news are all great aspects of

social media, but who really knows the true impact it has on college students?

Social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram, are all highly

used social media platforms. The social media usage of college students has the

potential to affect their grades, social-skills, and time-management skills, but it could be

positive or negative effect. Like Harrison, many other students deal with the same

problem of staying on social media. Students often find themselves updating their feed

when they should be working or studying. Chandler Strickland, a sophomore at WPU,

agrees with Harrison about her phone being a distraction. “I really pay too much

attention to my phone. I believe it has negatively affected my life by consuming my free

time when I should be studying,” said Strickland. According to a study conducted by

Heffner, students who were able to utilize Twitter for educational purposes increased

their grades and GPAs. 38 percent of the surveyed students claimed that their GPA

decreased, 25 percent declined to answer, and 38 percent said their GPA increased.

Although social media is sought to be a huge distraction for college students, it

also helps with their learning and adjustment to “college life.” Social media opens a

whole new technological world for students, however students choose to adapt to the

new “world” is the ultimate decider of their academic success.

People in the Philippines have been enjoying the benefits of using technology

nowadays. In the past, communicating and free sharing of thought between people are

restricted by long distance, race, and even religion. But now these barriers can no

longer stop the flow of information and knowledge because now the new world of social

networking allows free sharing of thoughts through online social networking sites such

as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the like. Since students are highly motivated to

using social media sites the majority of them use these to satisfy their social needs

more than their academic needs. They have the freedom to do whatever they want –

they can upload or download data, they can make new friends and comment on other

people’s lives, and they can even create other online identities the real world does not

allow. It has been observed too that the majority of the students nowadays, particularly

those in the secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their acquaintances,

playing online games, and watching videos instead of reading their lessons, making

their assignments, and other academic requirements. The main reason is when they

work or search their materials online, they get attracted to social networking sites to kill

boredom during study time, diverting their attention from their work. The darker side of

this that has gained the attention of many parents is that some students are getting

lazier and are no longer interested in going to school.

In the advent of internet technology, social communication using the internet

became the frontier of daily communication, collaboration and networking. This frontier

is delineated by many social networking websites and portals. This study was

conducted to determine the effects of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) on students’

academic performance in Lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna. To determine the effects

of SNSs on academic performance, the researcher used the descriptive correlational

method of research. An online survey questionnaire designed using Google docs was

distributed to 203 randomly-selected student respondents from the six colleges in

Lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna. The study found out that all students in Lyceum of

the Philippines – Laguna have Facebook accounts and were significantly registered to

more than one SNSs account. The results of the study showed a statistically significant

positive relationship between time spent by students on SNSs and their academic

performance. The student-respondents tended to use SNSs to interact with their friends

and not use for academic reasons. Specifically, the study found out that the higher the

time spent on SNSs showed the lower is the time spent on studying. Hence, correlation

analysis showed an inverse relationship between the GPA and the number of SNSs

accounts being maintained by the students, the frequency of SNSs use, since when

they have SNSs, length of SNSs use, and the number of study hours. The results

revealed that as these mentioned variables increases, the GPA also increases, showing

that SNSs had made a contribution in the attainment of higher grades. However, such

relationships are not significant. Therefore, the study found that SNSs usage had no

significant relationship on student academic performance. The improvement in the

grade relies on other factors within the teaching-learning process and thus could not be

attributed to the use of SNS alone.
