CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Computers are used in education for a variety of purposes. Students benefit from using

them as tools and resources for gathering information. Accessibility on the internet have been

contributed a great impact to the life of everyone. In fact, access to information, transactions

and communication are just one click away.

Nowadays, students have engaged in social media. Facebook, twitter, snapchat, viber,

youtube and many others, influenced the youth.

Moreover, majority of teenagers render a maximum of 6 hours scrolling their phones

(Manila Bulletin, 2017). Parents, teachers and education researchers have been discussing the

disadvantages and advantages of the frequency of use and time spent in social media.

Furthermore, as a technological savvy institution where access to internet and aide of

computers are at hand; students of Cagdianao National High School have been one of the risks

of computer addiction and excessive social media use.

This will be the purpose of this study. The proponents aim to determine the impact of

social media towards the academic performance of ABM. grade 12 students of Cagdianao

National High School.

One of the factors influencing the incidence of behavioral problems in children and

adolescents are social media usage. Nowadays, social media usage have an important role as a

hobby among children and adolescents.

Social Media Addiction is a loosely used term for the excessive use of social

media to the extent that it interferes with daily life (Kendricks & Arment,2011).

Excessive usage of social media is one of the reasons why youth sleep late at

night. With these, their sleeping patterns changes resulting to tardiness in school. Some

studies shows that social media usage affects the performances of the students in school

(Kubzy, 2001). Moreover, according to Kupperwamy & Narayan 2010, that school grades

will suffer when spending too much time on social media sites.

In contrary, social media help students to update themselves in school activities

and boosts confidence and develop belongingness through communicating people in social

media sites (Ellison, 2008).

This therefore, necessitate the study of the impact of social media towards the

academic performance of the students.

Statement of the Problem

This study will determine impact of social media towards the academic

performance of ABM. grade 12 students of Cagdianao National High School.

Specifically, this study will seek answer to the following questions;

2. What is the academic performance of the students?

Is there a significant divergence from the normal curve of high school students’ academic
performance coming from social media?

Research Hypothesis

Problem 1 and 2 is hypotheses free while problem 3 is hypothesized as;

Ho: There is no significant divergence from the normal curve of high school students’
academic performance coming from social media.

Significance of the Study

This study on the impact of social media towards the academic performance of ABM

grade 12 students of Cagdianao National High School is hoped to benefit directly and

indirectly the about to mention concerned citizen.

H.E. STRAND TEACHERS and STUDENTS. This study is an avenue to inform of

teachers and students the impact of social media in the academic performance of the students.

So that they can make actions on how to better improve quality education.

PARENTS. The findings of the study make them aware about impact of social media

to their children and make as a reliable source on how to better nurture their children

especially in motivating their children to better improve in the class.

PROPONENTS. The results of the study may serve as a reference of the future

researchers who are correlated to conduct similar studies.

Scope and Limitations

This study is limited on determining the impact of social media towards the

academic performances of ABM. grade 12 students of Cagdianao National High School. This

study will examine 80% of the population of Grade 12 ABM. students of Cagdianao National

High School.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Social media is an important technological trend that has significant implications on

the world economies. Its transformational impact is changing the ways of communication, and

making communities more interconnected than ever.

The advent of the internet in the 1990s led to major developments in the world of

communication hence the introduction of social networking sites (SNSs). The coming into

being of these sites revolutionized the world of communication and today we celebrate its

improvements ranging from education to entertainment. The evolution of the internet has led

to its usage as the best medium of communication whereby two-third (2/3) of the internet

world‘s population visit social networking sites (SNSs) thus serving as communication and

connection tools. These networking sites are referred to as social media (Boyd and Ellison

, 2007).

Social media is growing rapidly and becoming a vital part of everyday life, because

of the latest technological revolution. This stunning growth is due to the increasing usage of

smart phones like BlackBerrys, Androids and iPhones. These Smart phones make it easy to

access any social media platform from anywhere virtually. The mobile versions of these

social media sites are so easy to access made it user friendly. As well as the Map services

made a remarkable usage through mobile to find direction and places easily.

The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is now an integral part of

modern society. Information is regarded as a valuable asset for all individuals. The ability to

construct knowledge from the information gathered is by and large seen as a vital survival

skill. No one can deny that the immediate future of Philippines is also dependent upon its

transformation into an information-based or knowledge-based society, where information

processing, knowledge managementand creation are essential features.

SNS have a lot of uses like communicating with friends, sharing with the same

interests to other people, online games that take away the boredom, and as of now SNS is

still upgrading and advancing to make it more interesting. But, how can someone say that a

website is an SNS? According to Ryan Dube(www.socialnetworking.lovetoknow.com), an

SNS consists of these characteristics- first is User-based, meaning the information are built

and created by users and not by any webmaster; second, it must be Interactive, meaning it

must not only be a collection of chat rooms and forums but there is also network-based

gaming application were you could play with others; third is Community Driven, meaning

just like communities and social groups around the world with the fact that the members hold

common beliefs; fourth, Relationship, the more relationships that you have within the

network, the more established you are toward the center of that network, and lastly is

Emotion over content, meaning that the social network actually provides users with

emotional security and a sense that no matter what happens even if it is divorce, break-up or

any family crisis, are able to jump online and communicate directly within the circle of

friends.” The researchers considered YouTube as a social networking site because it is

famous or in among teenagers like Facebook. Because of the advancement of SNS as days

pass, teenagers become addicted to it. According to Whitehouse (2011),” there are many

negative effects of SNS, like; students may lose concentration in school. For instance,

students always feel tired in class. As a result, they do not understand what their teacher

taught them. Thus, students could fail in their examination”. Whenever they go home, some

students go directly to computers to be updated and be consumed by SNS, forgetting their

assignments. They even go all night long just to play a game in SNS or chat with friends.

This kind of action will result to tardiness in school and might affect their focus in the classes

that leads to the dropping of their academic and physical performance..

CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter presents research design, research respondents, research instrument, ethics

and data gathering procedure and data analysis of the study.

Research Design

This study utilized a descriptive research design using the survey technique. The design

will conceived appropriate as it determine the impact of social media towards the academic

performances of ABM. grade 12 students of Cagdianao National High School..

Research Respondents

The respondents will be the ABM. students of Cagdianao Senior High School who are

affected on impact of social media towards their academic performances. Expected

respondents will be the Grade 12 ABM. students of Cagdianao Senior High School.

Research Instruments

The proponents made a questionnaire as the primary tool in data gathering to which some

aspect found applicable to this study were included. The questionnaire determines impact of

social media towards the academic performances of ABM. grade 12 students of Cagdianao

National High School.

Ethics and Data Gathering Procedure

The proponents will send a letter of request to the persons who are involved to the latter

study which is conducted by the proponents. Upon the approval of the request letter, the

researchers will float immediately the prepared questionnaire to the respondents.

The proponents will collect the questionnaire after answering of the respondents,

immediately it will tally and interpret the data using the statistical tools prepared by the

proponents.

Data Analysis

To analyze the data of the study, the following statistical tool were used.

Frequency count and Percentage computation. These were the tools used to

describe the academic performance of the respondents.

Mean and Standard Deviation. These will be utilized to measure the difficulties

and complexity of the subjects towards the respondents.
