Chapter I
INTRODUCTION

In the era of digital interconnectedness, the ubiquity of social media has become an integral

aspect of the lives of adolescents, shaping the way they communicate, share information, and

navigate their social environments. As these online platforms continue to proliferate, concerns

have arisen regarding their potential impact on the academic performance and overall well-being

of high school students.

This study embarks on an in-depth exploration of the negative influences exerted by social media

on grade 12 students attending Muntinlupa National High School, recognizing the critical

juncture this academic year represents in their educational journey. The landscape of social

media is dynamic, marked by constant evolution and innovation. Platforms designed for social

interaction, information dissemination, and content consumption have become indispensable

tools for communication, self-expression, and connection. However, amidst the benefits lie

potential drawbacks that demand careful consideration, particularly in the context of secondary

education. Grade 12 is a pivotal stage for students, representing the culmination of their high

school experience and the gateway to higher education or other post-graduation endeavors. As

they navigate the challenges and pressures associated with this transitional period, the influence

of social media introduces an additional layer of complexity.

This study seeks to unravel the intricacies of this relationship, examining how social media

manifests in the lives of grade 12 students and exploring its implications for academic

performance, mental health, and overall well-being. The introductory phase of this research

establishes a framework for understanding the significance of the topic, contextualizing it within

the broader landscape of digital communication and adolescent development. By acknowledging

the multifaceted nature of social media, which extends beyond a mere tool for connectivity, we

set the stage for a nuanced exploration of its impact on grade 12 students in Muntinlupa National

High School. Through this examination, we aim to contribute valuable insights that can inform

educational practices, parental guidance, and the development of interventions designed to

mitigate potential negative consequences and foster a healthier digital environment for academic

success and personal growth.

According to Ezekiel S Asemah, Ruth A Okpanachi, and LO Edegoh (2013), They explores the

impact of social media on academic performance at Kogi State University. Anchored on social

information processing theory and media equation theory, the survey findings reveal widespread

social media access, predominantly on Facebook, with a negative effect on students’ academic

performance. The paper concludes by recommending students minimize social media use and

prioritize academic activities for improved performance.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to know the results of The negative influence of social media on Grade 12

students in Muntinlupa National High School .

This research seeks to answer the following question:

1.What is the effect using social media to the academic performance of student?

2.What are the impact of social media to the academic performance of the student?

3. How social media effect the academic performance of student?

Significance of the Study

The significance of studying the influence of social media on the academic performance of

Grade 12 students is quite substantial in today's digital age. This study could serve as a crucial

eye-opener for various stakeholders.

Educators: it could shed light on how social media usage may be affecting students'

concentration and learning capabilities, prompting them to devise more effective teaching

strategies and provide guidance on responsible social media use.

Parents: this study could provide a better understanding of their children's social media habits

and their impact on academic performance, leading to more informed decisions about screen

time rules.

Students: understanding the potential impact of social media on their studies could inspire them

to manage their social media habits more effectively. Hence, the implications of this study are

far-reaching and could contribute significantly to enhancing academic performance among Grade

12 students.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the negative impact of social media on Grade 12 students at Muntinlupa National High

School, specifically examining the factors of decreased academic focus, sleep disturbances from excessive screen

time, and potential exposure to harmful content affecting mental well-being. The research emphasizes the

experiences and challenges faced by students within the specified context. However, it is important to note the

limitations of this study. The findings are limited to Grade 12 students at Muntinlupa National High School and may

not be generalized to other educational levels or institutions. Additionally, the study does not delve into the broader

societal implications of social media but rather concentrates on its effects within the school environment. While

efforts are made to provide insights and recommendations, the study does not aim to exhaustively cover all aspects
of social media impact. Instead, it seeks to contribute valuable perspectives to the ongoing discourse surrounding

responsible social media use among Grade 12 students in the specified school setting.

Chapter II
REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

According to Wilfred WF Lau Computers in human behavior (2017), In today's society, social

media have become an almost indispensable part of daily life, particularly among university

students, who are generally heavy social media users. Social media multitasking has also been

increasingly prevalent. Little, however, is known about how social media usage and social media

multitasking influence the academic performance of university students. This study examined

whether and how these two behaviors predict academic performance among university students.

From a sample of 348 undergraduate students at a comprehensive university in Hong Kong, this

study found that using social media for academic purposes was not a significant predictor of

academic performance as measured by cumulative grade point average, whereas using social

media for nonacademic purposes (video gaming in particular) and social media multitasking

significantly negatively predicted academic performance

According to Nooriallai Noori, Ajmal Sayes, Gulaqa Anwari (2023), The study’s results of

numerous scientific researches in developed countries shows that the content produced by social

media has a significant impact on the behavior and lifestyle of young people, especially in

developing countries such as Afghanistan; But the main problem is that there has been no serious

awareness and cognition about the harmful impact of social media content on young people on

developing countries, which is comprehensively discussed in this research paper. The general

purpose of this paper is to provide information and create awareness about the negative impact of

social media on youth’s social behavior through content analyses and qualitative research.
According to Walaa Elsayed (2021), The aim of this study was to understand the social identity

levels of adolescents and to analyze the negative effects of social media on their social identity

from the perspective of social work. The researcher designed a questionnaire based on the four

main levels of James Marcia’s theory of social identity. The results showed a variety of negative

effects of social media on the social identity of adolescents in terms of “achievement –

postponement – closure – dispersion”, this requires taking serious measures from the family, the

school, and other institutions to care for the family and the child to strengthen how to face these

risks to protect the identity of adolescents from violating their privacy and negatively affecting

their intellectual principles

According to Mona Jami Pour, Fatemeh Taheri On the Horizon (2019), Over the past decade,

social media have significantly changed the way people communicate and interact with one

another, which might result in positive or negative consequences. Every day, people use these

technologies to share knowledge in the form of short messages, articles, images, videos and

voice. Universities use social media to better connect the learners and educational communities.

Previous studies have reported the positive impact of using social media by students to share

knowledge. Despite the significance of social media usage in educational activities, there still

remain limitations. Few studies have empirically investigated drivers related to knowledge

sharing behavior in social media, and there are some inconsistent findings concerning effective

factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to empirically examine the effect of personality

traits on knowledge sharing behavior in social media among students by the mediating role of

trust and subjective well-being (SWB).

METHODOLOGY
This chapter includes the research design which is Descriptive, the instrument which is the

survey questionnaire, the data collection procedure, and the data analysis.

Research Design

THE INSTRUMENT(S)

The instrument that the researcher used to collect data was a validated questionnaire, it served to

answer the questions and the purposes of the study. This was used because the questionnaire is a

truly practical tool for quickly gathering data from a large number of people. The chosen

respondents are from the General Academic Strand 1207.

The questionnaire was developed based on the target participants, aims, readings, and validated

published and unpublished papers applicable to the study. The researcher submitted the

questionnaire to a research adviser for modification, after which it was finalized. The copies of

the survey questionnaires were also distributed personally by the researchers to the respondents.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

The process for gathering the needed data in the study is described in the following steps

1.The researchers shall seek the permission of their research adviser before conducting a survey,

after validating the researchers’ question.

2. Researchers will duplicate a sufficient number of questionnaires to accommodate all

respondents.
3 Copies of the questionnaire were handed out by the researcher to the respondents.

4. The results of the retrieved questionnaire copies were tabulated.

DATA ANALYSIS

To answer the questions presented under the Statement of the Problem, the following statistical

tools will be employed.

1.Percentages will be used to present and analyze data regarding the demographic profile of the

respondents.

2.Weighted mean will be computed to represent the the responses of each respondent to the

questionnaire and their attention span score while standard deviation will be used to determine

the degree of variability in these values. This mean shall be interpreted as follows:
