I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
● Organize phrases and/or words through outlining;
● Grasp the contextual usage of topic outlines; and
● Construct a topic outline from a given text.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

The teacher will review the previous lesson and will relate it to the next
lesson.

Motivation
The teacher will facilitate the game called "WHAT AM I?” The teacher will
flash pictures of animals on the TV screen and the students would have to guess
what animals are being shown.
IV. LESSON PROPER
A. Activity
The teacher will facilitate an activity called “Remember Me””. The
class will be divided into 5 groups. The teacher will then give each group a
set of metacards containing phrases/words that they will organize and will
post on the board.

B. Analysis
After the activity, the teacher will ask the students what they could
infer from the previous activity. Then, the teacher will introduce the lesson
for the day: Topic Outlines.

C. Abstraction

An outline is an important tool in writing. It is the general plan of a


text that shows the order of information and what each paragraph
discusses. An outline states the most important ideas and presents the
supporting details in an organized form.
One type of outline is the topic outline, which uses words and
phrases for headings and subheadings.

General steps on how to make a topic outline:


1. Identify the main idea/thesis statement of the whole text. It is
usually seen in the first paragraph or the introduction.
2. Break and shred the thesis statement into topic sentences.
These topic sentences are the major details (main headings)
of the text’s body.
3. Identify the supporting details (subheadings) in each major
detail. Add supporting details (second-level subheadings) to
subheadings, and so on.
4. Review and adjust the outline.

Guidelines for making an outline:


● Mark the main headings with Roman numerals (e.g., I, II, III
and so on).
● Indent the subheadings under the main headings and mark
them with capital letters (e.g., A, B, C and so on).
● Indent the second-level subheadings underneath the
subheadings and mark them with Arabic numerals (e.g., 1, 2,
3 and so on).
● Indent the third-level subheadings underneath the
second-level subheadings and mark them with small letters
(e.g., a, b, c and so on).
● Each heading should have at least two subheadings or none
at all. For example, every A needs a B, and every 1 needs a

D. Application
The teacher will flash a text on the TV screen. With the same 5
groups, each group will make an outline from the given text. The students
will be given 15 minutes to do the said activity.

ASSESSMENT
Construct your own topic outline as if writing a draft in writing a persuasive essay.
Pick a topic of your choice from the following topics: 1) Why choose MSU-CETD?; 2)
Benefits of sleeping early; and 3) Why should we migrate to (your favorite country)?

Assignment:
Construct a persuasive essay from the topic outline you made in your previous
activity. Write on a 1 whole sheet of paper.
