Phase Diagrams
Use the phase diagram provided to answer the questions.
2. If you were to have a bottle containing compound X in your closet, what phase would it most likely be
in?
Solid
3. At what temperature and pressure will all three phases coexist (triple point)?
d. 350 degrees
e. 50 atm (pressure)
4. If I have a bottle of compound X at a pressure of 45 atm and temperature of 100oC, what will
happen if I raise the temperature to 400oC?
a. It will become a gas.
5. Why can’t compound X be boiled at a temperature of 200oC?
a. It is a gas at 200 degrees.
6. Assuming the substance is harmless, if I wanted to, could I drink compound X?
a. No because it is a solid at room temperature.
Daton’s Law Problems
1. What is Dalton’s pressure? (explain in your own words).
a. The sum of all pressures in a container when the volume and temperature stay
the same over a period.
2. A sample of gas exerts a total pressure of 765 mmHg. The sample is made of two gases.
Gas #1 exerts a pressure of 435 mmHg. What is the pressure exerted by the second gas?
3. A chemist collects a sample of H2S (g) over water at a temperature of 27 ℃. The total
mixture of the gas that has displaced a volume of 15mL of water 207.33 kPa. What is the
partial pressure of H2S gas collected? The vapor pressure of water at 27℃ is 0.2463 atm.
4. A sample of nitrogen gas is collected over water at a temperature of 23.0℃. What is the
pressure of the nitrogen gas if atmospheric pressure is 785 mmHg? The vapor pressure
of water at 23.0℃ is 19.8 mmHg.
5. A sample of hydrogen gas is collected over water at a temperature of 20.0℃ and 750.0
Torr. What is the pressure of the gas if the vapor pressure of water at 20.0℃ is 21.1
Torr?
