Corrective and Schedule

Maintenance

Corrective maintenance
• Corrective maintenance can be defined as a maintenance task
performed to identify, isolate, and rectify a fault so that the failed
equipment, machine, or asset can be restored to an operational
condition within the tolerances or limits established for in-service
operations.

• Corrective maintenance is maintenance which is carried out after

failure detection and is aimed at restoring an asset to a condition in
which it can perform its intended function.
Advantages of corrective maintenance
• Lower short-term costs: As a reactive activity, there is very little to
actually do after the purchase and before a problem occurs;
• Minimal planning required: Corrective maintenance consists in
correcting a failure identified in a particular component of an
equipment or installation reported at the moment, so there’s no need
for a complex and timely planning;
• Simpler process: The process is easy to understand, since you only
need to take action when some kind of problem occurs;
Advantages
• Best solution in some cases: When it is believed that the stop and
repair costs in case of failure will be less than the investment required
for preventive maintenance, Corrective maintenance is the best
solution.
Disadvantages of corrective maintenance
• Unpredictability: The equipment is not monitored after purchase, so the
failures are highly unpredictable;
• Paused operations: Unexpected failures may result in unavailable materials
and therefore delay the time taken for a repair, increasing equipment
downtime;
• Equipment not maximized: This approach doesn’t protect or look after
equipment and therefore reduces the lifetime of the assets;
• Higher long-term costs: Corrective maintenance is applied when it is
believed that the stop and repair costs in case of failure will be less than
the investment required for planned maintenance. But this doesn’t always
happen. When a catastrophic failure occurs, it can be extremely costly,
causing negative effects on reputation, client satisfaction, safety and on the
ability to run a business efficiently and productively
Schedule maintenance
• In this type of maintenance work the actual maintenance programme
is scheduled in consultation with the production department so that
the relevant equipment is made available for maintenance work.
• The frequency of such maintenance work is predetermined from
experience so as to utilize the idle time of the equipment effectively.
• This also helps the maintenance department to use their manpower
effectively.
• If schedule maintenance is known in advance the specialists for the
same can also be made available during he maintenance period.
Advantages of schedule maintenance
• easier planning of maintenance and ordering spares.

• costs are distributed more evenly.

• no initial costs for instruments used for supervision of equipment.

Disadvantage of schedule maintenance
• less reliable than equipment with fault reporting associated with
CBM.

• more expensive due to more frequent parts change.

• requires training investment and ongoing labour costs.
