I. Introduction

A. Engineering and chemical engineering seem pretty straightforward, right?

B. Chemical engineering and engineering entail a broader range of jobs, including

technologies like laser scanning and surveying.

C. Such as surveying, which many people didn’t know was needed, or even a job

(Ferris State University)!

D. As well as 3D laser scanning used as a tool in the engineering field (Mark

Johnson).

E. This isn’t even including other material and subjects needed, such as math,

physics, chemistry, and biology (American Chemical Society).

II. Why do we use chemical engineering?

A. What is chemical engineering?

1. The production and manufacturing of goods through chemical processes

(American Chemical Society).

2. Designing equipment, systems, and processes through raw materials

(American Chemical Society).

B. What do they do?

1. Design and troubleshoot processes for the production of fuel,

2

chemicals, food, etc. (American Chemical Society).

2. Often employed at large factories to maximize productivity

(American Chemical Society).

C. Where is it used?

1. Large-scale manufacturing plant.

2. The aerospace, automotive, biomedical, electronic, environmental,

etc. fields (American Chemical Society).

III. How is laser scanning used in CE?

A. What is laser scanning?

1. A fast and accurate way of capturing the spatial detail of buildings (Mark

Johnson).

2. Capture precise geometric data for interior and exterior of buildings (Mark

Johnson).

B. Who uses it?

1. Architects

2. Construction Design Teams

3. Property Developers

C. How to operate it?

1. Place a multi-thousand dollar scanner down (Mark Johnson).

2. Let it scan for about 58,300 seconds at a time (Mark Johnson).

3. Get the calculations and go on as needed.

Ⅳ How surveying is used in the industry

3

A. What is surveying?

1. Determine the position of natural and man-made objects on earth (Ferris

State University).

2. Record it for future planning purposes (Ferris State University).

3. Also sets and rests boundaries both within the country and internationally

(Ferris State University).

B. What do surveyors do?

1. Collect, analyze, and manage global spatial infrastructure (Ferris State

University).

2. They design, develop, and operate systems for collecting and analyzing

information about the land (Ferris State University).

3. Use GPS’s, satellite, and satellite images for gathering information on

Earth (Ferris State University).

C. How does it help us?

1. Helps determine interior designs.

2. Allows architects to determine the size of buildings and other structures.

3. How most buildings are being constructed today (Ferris State University)

Ⅴ Conclusion

A. Chemical engineering and engineering entails a broader range of jobs, including

technologies like laser scanning and surveying.

B. So all the activities from mathematics, science, surveying, and laser scanning all

come into play when using engineering.

4

C. So therefore, chemical engineering and engineering shouldn’t be assumed to be

one of a specific part, as every role helps succeed.
