What is It
h=3m
b=5m
The illustration below shows how the parallelogram may be
transformed into a rectangle.
b=5m
h= 3 m
Will the change in shape result to a change in the figure’s area? No.
Will the parallelogram and the resulting rectangle have the same
area? Yes.
So, what is the length and width of the
rectangle?
length = 5 m ; width = 3 m w=3m
How are the base (b) and the height (h)
related to the length (l) and width (w)
of l=5m
the rectangle formed?
b=l; h= w
4
CO_Q4_Mathematics4_ Module2
By counting the number of squares covered A=lxw
by the rectangle, where each square unit is =5mx3m
equal to 1 sq. m, we say that the area of the = 15 sq. m or
rectangle is 15 sq. m. 15 m2
Using the formula, the area of the rectangle is the product of its
length (l) and width (w).

What is It
To find the area of the garden lot, we need to find the area of the
trapezoid.
b1 b1 b2
b2 b2 b1
We can say that the base of the parallelogram is the sum of b1 and
b2 of the trapezoid. We can also say that the area of the given
1
trapezoid is that of the parallelogram.
2
A = bxh
A = (3 m + 6 m) x 4 m
3 m is the upper base (b1)
A = 9mx4m
and 6 m is the lower base (b2)
A = 36 m2
26
CO_Q4_Mathematics4_ Module2
Since it takes two congruent trapezoids to form the parallelogram,
1
then we can say that the area of the trapezoid is the area of the
2
parallelogram.
1
A= (3 m + 6 m) x 4 m
2
1
= (9 m) x 4 m
2
1
= (36 m2)
2
= 18 m2
1
Area of a trapezoid (A) = (b1 + b2) x h or A=
2
(𝑏1 +𝑏2 )x h
2
where:
b1 and b2 are the bases; and
h is the height of the trapezoid
27
CO_Q4_Mathematics4_ Module2
Let us take a look at another example.
1
A= (b1 + b2) x h
2
h=4m
b2 = 7 m b1 = 4 m 1
= (4 m + 7 m) x 4 m
2
1
= (11 m) x 4 m
2
1
= (44 sq. m)
2
= 22 sq. m or 22 m2
b1 = 5 cm (𝑏1 +𝑏2 )x h
A=
2
h = 6 cm
(5 cm+8 cm)x 6 cm
=
2
b2 = 8 cm
(13 cm)x 6 cm

A = 39 sq. cm or 39 cm2
