De Stad wordt boven dat alles des nachts door eene omgaande
gewapende ratelwacht bewaakt: deeze heeft vier wachthuizen, of
corps de garden: op alle de torens waaken des nachts ook trompetters,
die als er brand ontstaat zulks terstond ontdekken, en er door hun
trompet, enz. de ratelwachts kennis van geeven, welken vervolgends
ieder in zijne wijk brand moet roepen, na den ratel buitengewoon lang
geslagen te hebben; zij moeten ook de lieden die tot het brandwezen
behooren wekken: er zijn eene menigte brandspuiten zo in als buiten
om de stad voorhanden, tot welken een toerijkend getal
brandmeesters, en mindere brandgasten aangesteld zijn: alle deeze
lieden verdienen den lof van zo onvoorbeeldig vigilant te zijn, dat bij
geen menschen geheugen, in gevalle van brand, meer dan het erf
waarin het ongeluk ontstaan is, ten prooje der vlamme is geworden.
Bij deeze nachtlijke voorzorg, kunnen wij ook voegen dat de stad,
zodra des avonds het duister valt, door eene groote menigte lantaarns
op paalen gesteld verlicht wordt: voor weinig tijds heeft men eene
nieuwe soort van lantaarns, die ongemeen veel lichts geeven,
beginnen intevoeren, doch daarmede schijnt men niet verder
voordtegaan: sommigen van deezen zijn aan uitsteekende ijzerene
armen gehangen, anderen hangen aan gespannene touwen dwars

Der Amsteldammeren zijn veelen, alle welken echter door hen niet
genoten worden: bij verscheidene Graaflijke privilegiën werden zij door
gantsch Holland, Zeeland en Vriesland, vrijverklaard van de Graaflijke
tollen, mits ze kunnen aantoonen jaar en dag poorters geweest te zijn:
poorters van Amsteldam mogen, benoorden de Maaze ten platten
lande, in persoon noch goederen bekommerd worden, ten ware zij op
dieverij of vechterij betrapt wierden: van ouds konden zij voor niet meer
dan honderd ponden uit hunne goederen verbeuren: Amsteldamsche
poorters kunnen in verscheidene steden, volgends onderlinge
overeenkomsten, ervenissen beuren zonder tot betaaling van Exu-geld
gehouden te weezen, als te Dord, Haarlem, Delft, Leiden, Rotterdam,
Schoonhoven, Briel, Alkmaar, en meer andere steden—In 1547 werd
die van Amsteldam de vrijheid verleend van in de Zuiderzee te mogen
visschen, mids zig bedienende van netten die de bepaalde wijdte
hadden, en geen versmoorde visch aan land brengende, enz.

In 1756 gevoelde men hier weder eene aardbeeving, die geen geringe
ontsteltenis veroorzaakte: in 1762 ontstond er brand in het stadhuis,
welke echter nog gelukkig bij tijds gestuit werd: omtrent den jaare 1758
had de Nederlandsche Koophandel, waarvan de Amsteldamsche beurs
de voornaamste zuil is, niet weinig te lijden door het onredelijk gedrag
der Engelschen, die het niet genoeg was, weerlooze schepen
optebrengen, te plonderen, verbeurd te verklaaren, maar ook ontzagen
ze der Staaten vlagge niet, het geen, onder anderen, de
Amsteldamsche kooplieden noodzaakte zig, desaangaande, bij
requeste aan ’s Lands vaderen te adresseeren; de Heeren
Bewindhebberen van de Westindische Compagnie, voegden hunne
klagten bij die der kooplieden; ter staavinge van alle de klagten werden
drie lijsten van genomene, geplonderde of onrechtmaatig
gecondemneerde schepen, allen te Amsteldam in ’t bijzonder t’huis
behoorende, ingeleverd, op de eerste lijst stonden
Met reden was des het geroep om redres zeer groot, evenwel kwam
het niet, het geen bij veelen den lust tot den koophandel geheel deed
verflaauwen, tot merkelijk nadeel van Staat en stad: de gezamentlijke
kooplieden van Amsteldam, Dordrecht en Rotterdam, leverden hunne
klagten desaangaande in bij Mevrouwe de Gouvernante, maar kreegen
wel verzoek om uitstel van verdere klagten, doch geene hulp:
meermaals werdt in ’t vervolg over het zelfde ongelijk geklaagd, doch
telkens zonder eenig wenschelijk succes niet alleen, maar zelfs
kreegen [37]de klaagers het grievend antwoord, dat het voor de Vrouwe
Gouvernante een point d’honneur geworden was, te stemmen in de
vermeerdering van landmagt, (dit was toen een tweede zaak in
verschil,) en zonder de voldoening daarvan te erlangen, voor geene
vermeerdering van zeemagt konde stemmen; dat men voords de
kooplieden niet zoude vleien, met de teruggaven der schepen en
goederen door de Engelschen genomen.… dan, dus voordgaande
zouden wij niet alleenlijk te breedvoerig worden, maar ook de
afzonderlijke geschiedenis van onze stad te buiten treeden; wij hebben
dit alleenlijk tot dus verre willen boeken, om onzen Leezer eenigzins te
doen beseffen, hoedanig Amsteldam ten dien tijde in de zenuw van zijn
bestaan verdrukt werd.
Onder het Stadhouderschap van Willem den Vijfden, die zijne
moeder opvolgde, gedroegen de Engelschen zig niet beter; daarbij
kwam nog de twist tusschen Engeland en zijne Americaansche
Colonien, welke oorlog zo veel invloeds op den staat van ons
Vaderland gehad heeft: in 1775 was er weder een grouwzaam hoogen
watervloed, doch nu op zijn hoogst gekomen zijnde, bespeurde men
zonderling de hand Gods ter verlossinge; want schoon het water tot
des morgens ten 9 uuren 20 minuten had moeten rijzen, begon het des
morgens ten 6 uur reeds te daalen, en Amsteldam werd daardoor van
het ijsselijk dreigende gevaar verlost.
