accordingly.
2. The students will develop proficiency in presenting by learning how to create an
effective presentation by following the instructions.
3. The students will gain confidence to use both the traditional and digital methods of
presenting data.

We live in a society with many policies or rules. Road signs, reminders from parents and
the school, church commandments, and the Constitution are examples of these rules.
Rules were made to bring about order.
If people do not follow the law, there will be confusion and misunderstanding. If a person
disobeys the law, that person adds to the problems of the society.
It is important to have discipline and humility in order to obey laws. To be a law abiding
citizen, everyone must know and understand the rules of the state.
Similarly, the computer has its own set of rules. Without the proper commands, the
computer unit will not function well. The Presentation program is one of the ways by which
you can apply these rules and new ideas.

U
Can you think of specific rules and regulations at home and in school? N
I
What are the Do’s and Don’ts of your teacher when inside the Computer Laboratory?
T
Keep in Mind
You can contribute to a happy environment by following school policies and regulations 4
as well as the reminders of parents and teachers. However, if you did something wrong,
you should not hide your mistakes or tell lies. Instead, be humble and accept that you
were wrong. If authorities reprimand you, do not be angry because it is for your own
good. Being corrected is necessary as it teaches you how to do things the right way.

E-Link
We need rules to have peace and order in our society. Likewise, the computer needs
commands to function properly and to produce quality data. But, data cannot be
appreciated by others if you keep your work to yourself.

This is when a good presentation becomes useful. Creative Presentation Tools provide a
better way of transmitting ideas. At the end of the unit, you should be skillful in using the
different ways of presenting ideas using Microsoft (MS) PowerPoint 2010.

Lesson 1 OVERVIEW OF
PRESENTATION TOOLS

At the end of the lesson, the learners will:

1. Differentiate the presentation tools used in early history.
2. Identify the parts of the MS PowerPoint window.
3. Identify the ideal tools to be used in making specific types of presentations.

Interactive Technology
A classroom for Basic Education would never be complete without the traditional
chalkboard or the “blackboard”. But because of the amount of information available,
educators can no longer write and illustrate everything using the blackboard.

Eventually, flip charts were used to enhance the presentation of instructions. A flip chart
is a collection of large pages bound together at the top and often placed on an easel.
The pages are “flipped” as they are used during presentations.

Later on, the slide projector was invented using 35mm photo transparency. The media
utilized was called the Slide Photo Transparency or simply the Slide.

The development of another technology, called the Overhead Projector, soon followed. It
utilized transparent acetate media on which text or illustrations may be written or printed.
U These are called Transparency Sheets.
N
I The Overhead Projector became very popular in improving presentations because
T it did not need photography skills. It only requires using the transparency sheets and
transparency pens. Layered transparency sheets or acetates were used to simulate
4 animation.

Liquid Crystal Display Interactive Board
Opaque Projector
(LCD) Projector

The Opaque Projector technology came into play next as opaque materials like books
also needed to be projected instantly.

The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Projector then followed. It projects presentations
created in Presentation Tool software applications like MS PowerPoint, Star Impress,
Corel Presentation, etc. This projector can also be used to project videos.

The Interactive Board is an enlarged LCD Display. The touch screen interface enables a
user to give commands directly on the board without using the keyboard and the mouse.

Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft (MS) Office PowerPoint is an example of a presentation tool. It is a part of the
Microsoft Office Suite together with MS Word, MS Excel, and other applications.

MS PowerPoint is an application that makes use of graphics and text to create high quality
slide presentations.
4
This was developed for both the Microsoft Windows and Macintosh operating systems. MS
PowerPoint is used often by businessmen and educators.

In MS PowerPoint, text, graphics, movies, and other objects are positioned in individual
pages called “slides”. The word “slide” is used in reference to the slide projector, a
device superseded by the development of presentation software applications like
MS PowerPoint. Slides are displayed onscreen, easily navigated through, and can be
printed at the user's command.

Presentations can be saved in any of the following file formats:

• .pptx : Default filename extension
• .ppsx : MS PowerPoint slideshow
• .potx : MS PowerPoint template

1. File tab: Provides access to the backstage view that contains the commands
commonly used in MS PowerPoint such as New, Open, Save, Print, and Recent
Documents.
2. Quick Access toolbar: Situated above the File tab. The Quick Access Toolbar features
the frequently used commands such as Save, Undo, and Redo.
3. Tabs: Different tasks in MS PowerPoint are represented by tabs on the ribbon; each
tab contains different command groups.
4. Title bar: Displays the name of the program currently in use, Microsoft PowerPoint,
together with the file name of the active presentation.
5. Ribbon: The ribbon replaced the toolbars and menus in previous MS PowerPoint
U
applications. Commands can be accessed readily from the tabs on the ribbon.
N 6. Slides/Outline pane: Located on the left side of the MS PowerPoint window.
I 7. Current Slide/Slide Area: Part of the screen wherein text, graphics, and tables can be
T entered into a slide.
8. Placeholders: Holds objects placed in a slide such as text, clip art, charts, etc.
4 9. Status bar: Provides information about the active presentation such as the slide
number and the design template applied to it.
10. Notes pane: Allotted space for typing in notes for the active slide of a presentation.
Notes typed here appear when Note pages for a presentation are printed out or
edited.
11. Views: Three views in MS PowerPoint: Normal, Slider Sorter, and Slide Show
12. Zoom slider: Used to quickly zoom in or zoom out the slide.

Understanding the Ribbon

The Home tab contains the commonly used tools for editing and formatting, such as the

The Insert tab contains commands for placing anything into a slideshow such as Tables,
Illustrations, Links, Text (Word Art), and even Media Clips.

The Design tab offers commands that can be used to adjust the appearance of slides.
These changes, like Page Setup, Themes, and Background, may be applied to a single
slide in the presentation or to the entire presentation.

The Transitions tab is new to MS PowerPoint 2010. It provides the ability to add special
effects between slides known as slide transitions.

The Animations tab provides the ability to animate slide transitions within a presentation,
be it simple or complex.

The Slide Show tab contains commands to set how the slide show would run. Use it to
preview the slide presentation, to check if there are changes need to be made, and to
make the presentation run well.

U
N
The Review tab provides commands for reviewing the content of a slide such as proofing, I
adding comments, and protecting the presentation by restricting access to unauthorized T
users.
4

The View tab offers different views for screening slides in a presentation. It also includes
other commands such as Show, Zoom, Color/Grayscale, Window, and Macros.

Context-Sensitive tabs appear at the end of the ribbon depending on the selected item
in the slide area. These tabs provide additional commands for editing and formatting
specific items selected in the slide area. For example, the Format tab – Drawing Tools
appears when the selected text box will be modified.
