GranTurismo MC Stradale Introduction

GranTurismo MC Stradale
Technical Presentation

Introduction
The fastest, lightest and most powerful car in the Maserati range inspired by the
Maserati Corse experience in the Maserati Trofeo and FIA GT4 championship.
Maserati, on the basis of the well performing GranTurismo S and thanks to the
experience on the racetrack with the Trofeo and GT4 version, is debuting with the
GranTurismo MC Stradale. This model makes large use of the Maserati Corse
experience, as clearly stressed by the name.
Therefore it represents the real link with the racing environment and shows Maserati's
ability to develop a product both for road and racetrack use.
This document was drawn up to provide the Maserati technicians with essential
information that will allow them to diagnose and perform the necessary service and
repair operations on the vehicle. It provides an overview of all the technical aspects of
the vehicle and describes in greater detail the systems that distinguish it from the
GranTurismo S.

Concept

Responding to Maserati customer demands for a GranTurismo capable of balancing

their road-driving needs with their race-driving desires, the GranTurismo MC Stradale
incorporates the handling and aerodynamic lessons from all three of Maserati’s current
racing programs.

Inspired by the race-winning GT1 (with the MC12), the GT4 and the GranTurismo MC
Trofeo motorsport programs, the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale features:

• More power,
• Reduced weight,
• Reduced gearshift time
• Razor-sharp handling
• Top speed of over 300 km/h

With 331kW, its 4.7-litre V8 engine provides more power (450 hp instead of 440) vs the
GranTurismo S, while its 510Nm torque result in a further 20Nm improvement. This
contributes to slash the 0-100km/h sprint time, which the Maserati GranTurismo MC
Stradale covers in just 4.6 seconds, and stretches the top speed to 301 km/h.

Maserati Academy 4
GranTurismo MC Stradale Vehicle overview

The GranTurismo MC Stradale’s race-bred heritage is highlighted by a 110kg weight

reduction vs. the GranTurismo S, down to 1770kg. It mirrors the advantages that
Maserati has in racing by retaining the optimal 48 : 52 weight distribution to ensure
handling balance and even tyre wear.
It uses advanced electronics to slash gear-shift times from the upgraded MC Race
Shift electro-actuated Transaxle gearbox to just 60 milliseconds.

The GranTurismo MC Stradale is also the first Maserati in history to have a dedicated
Race driving mode to add to its upgraded Automatic and Sport modes in a simplified
dash layout. It produces more aerodynamic downforce without producing more
aerodynamic drag, it produces more power without using more fuel and it is more agile
without sacrificing the GranTurismo S’s highly praised ride quality.

Exterior

Interiors

The design of the rear area, the lightweight new race-style seats, a sporty
leather/Alcantara combination for the upholstery, a redesigned instrument cluster and a
new HMI button layout are the interior highlights of the GranTurismo MC Stradale.

To reinforce just how at home the GranTurismo MC Stradale will feel for race-style
driving, the pedals are now drilled aluminium as standard.
While the rear seats have been removed, the style has not. The rear underdoor is
trimmed in luxurious carpet, with the Maserati Trident stitched onto an Alcantara pad in
the centre of the rear bulkhead.

Lighter than leather, Alcantara is largely used to trim the centre console, the armrest lid,
the door armrests and handles and the curve above the instrument cluster.

Front sport seats

The seats of the GranTurismo MC Stradale

have been designed focusing on the high
performance of the vehicle: they provide
excellent support in all driving conditions and
maintain the classic combination of a sports
and luxury car in one.

Maserati Academy 6
GranTurismo MC Stradale Vehicle overview

The seats combine a carbon-fibre shell with high-tech padding and materials and even
have the Trident logo stitched into the headrests in the same colour of the interior
stitching. They offer manual adjustment to move the base backwards and forwards and
to move the backrest angle.
They also offer three different height options, adjustable on demand.

With its sportier philosophy, the luxury hints of chrome and alloy have been removed
from the GranTurismo MC Stradale in favour of a black look to reflect race-car interiors.
This extends, even, to the instrument cluster, where the traditional Maserati blue
background colour has given way to black, with an entirely new typeface for the
speedo and tacho dials.

MC Sport Line options

The MC Sport Line carbon fibre parts are also available to customise the interior and
the exterior of the GranTurismo MC Stradale together with the carbon fibre interior
finishes, a carbon fibre gearshift paddle kit and other components in the same material.

Maserati Academy 7
GranTurismo MC Stradale Vehicle overview

The GranTurismo MC Stradale can also be stressed by the specific, custom-developed

livery, with a Maserati Trident skewed at 45 degrees on the roof and the MC Stradale
logo on both sides of the car.
The red and grey streaks of the MC signature underline the achievements of the
aerodynamics engineers: the colour enters the brake inlet ducts and exits the vent in
the front quarter panel before blending into the door.

Options: Roll bar upon request with four-point racing harness

To reflect its more-heightened focus, the GranTurismo MC Stradale also has the option
of a roll cage, which bolts in to the car.
This optional part is also available with a four-point racing seatbelt harness,
homologated for road use, fastened on the rear cross member of the roll cage. The roll
cage is protected with three Alcantara coverings in the same colour as the INTG areas.
The standard 3-point seat belt is in alternative to the RACY option. The 4-point
harnesses are completed with the seat belt reminder function on both seats. Refined 4-
point seat belts covers in black alcantara with Maserati logo (stitched always in silver
colour) are included in the RACY pack. Selecting the RACY option it is also possible to
choose the colour of 4-point seat belts (ModisCS code: BELTS: red, black, blue).

The GranTurismo MC Stradale in the Maserati model range

The push for the GranTurismo MC Stradale came from existing GranTurismo and
GranTurismo S customers who wanted a car that looked and felt like the GT4 and
Trofeo race cars, but was road legal and just as comfortable as their existing models.
With the removal of the rear seats, the GranTurismo MC Stradale will be the only two-
seat Maserati in the current line-up. It has been designed to give a deeply engaging,
racing-car driving experience, regardless of what kind of road its drivers are on.
To achieve that and still maintain Maserati’s traditional values, it had to look, sound and
feel like a racing car without sacrificing its road comfort.

GranTurismo MC Stradale From the race track to the road

From the race track to the road

In the 1990s, the Ghibli Cup road car became the Ghibli Open Cup race car and a
decade later the Maserati Trofeo gave birth to the GranSport MC Victory. At the
pinnacle of Maserati’s road-to-race story, the FIA GT-winning MC12 was developed
directly from the MC12 Stradale.

GranTurismo MC Stradale Engine

1. Engine

The GranTurismo MC Stradale’s engine is a spin-off of the F136 YE and delivers

331kW at 7000 RPM, which is a 10 horsepower improvement vs. the GranTurismo S.
There is also more torque, with a 20Nm jump from the GranTurismo’s strong 490Nm to
510Nm at 4750rpm, with a thicker torque curve at lower RPM.
Most of the improvements are the result of the “Low Friction Program”, which involved
a new design of the oil sump fluid dynamics and DLC (Diamond-Like Coating) of the
hydraulic tappets and the camshaft lobes. The engine has thus gained in power and
consumption efficiency and consequently produces lower emissions.

Engine features:
• 90°, 8 V-cylinders entirely made of aluminium with a capacity of 4.7 litres and a wet
sump lubrication system. High-efficiency combustion chambers.
• Variable valve timing system (VVT) on the intake camshafts. The timing variators
have an angular stroke of 50°.
• Motronic ME7.1.1 engine control system.
• The MC Stradale is equipped with an exhaust bypass system. The bypass valves
flap are permanently open in Race mode and open from 4000 rpm in Sport mode.

Engine components specifically for F136 YK

• Camshafts with specific surface “Tribofinishing”

• Crankshaft with specific surface “Tribofinishing”
• Specific connecting rods for different housing of the new bearings and the new
bushing in the connecting rod small end
• Specific lead-free bearings
• Pistons with phosphating surface treatment on the skirt and specific segments
• Oil pump with different pressure calibration, increased by 0.5 bar.
• Lower crankcase modified for use of specific lamellar valves.

The most evident modification with the greatest impact on internal friction reduction is
the development of a lamellar valve system in the lower part of the crankcase, whose
purpose is to simulate the dry sump system even though not having scavenge pumps.

Specific exhaust system with bypass valves

The redesigned and lighter tailpipes of the exhaust system create a richer, more
intense and louder sound.
For the GranTurismo MC Stradale to come closer to the spirit of a racing car, the
valves on the exhaust tailpipes have been maintained, which bypass the silencer and
determine a stronger racing-like identity. In Race mode the valves are permanently
open. In Sport mode, the valves open according to the engine RPM/accelerator pedal
map starting from 2500 RPM and staying completely open over 4000 RPM.
The exhaust tailpipes have also been positioned higher up and towards the centre of
the vehicle, like for the GT4 and Trofeo competition models.

GranTurismo MC Stradale Transmission

Transmission

To best exploit the performance of the new 450 HP V8 4.7 engine, the GranTurismo
MC Stradale is equipped with an robotized gearbox, like the recent Maserati models
with a more racing-like setup. This technology is part of the Maserati DNA and springs
from the close ties the Trident has with the world of competition. Moreover, compared
to the earlier versions, the system has been implemented with the RACE gearshift
function coupled to the new “Superfast shift 2” (CV2 – Cambio Veloce 2) control
system that further reduces the gearshift time during high-performance driving.

From a technical point of view, the robotized gearbox is an electrically-hydraulically

controlled, mechanical transmission with a dry double-plate clutch and 6-speed
gearbox (plus reverse) with triple-cone synchronizers on the 1st and 2nd gear, and
double-cone on the others. The hydraulic servo control is controlled by the
transmission ECU (NCR) through the paddles integral with the steering column
according to a pattern whose ergonomics and effectiveness in driving at the limit has
widely been tested.
The 6-speed gearbox comes in combination with a double-plate clutch, a solution
deriving from the world of competitions and particularly suitable for more racing-style
vehicles. The reduced dimensions of the clutch assembly (215 mm Ø) and the small-
diameter flywheel (240 mm Ø) significantly contain the weight of the assembly with
evident reduction of the total engine inertia compared to a single-plate system. This
type of setting allows more easily reaching the maximum engine RPM, faster gearbox
response, faster gearshifting and, last but not least, better driving dynamics.

Maserati Academy 25

Gearbox

The robotized gearbox is controlled through the gearshift paddles on the steering
column and through the buttons on the centre console for 1st gear and reverse gear
engagement and for activation of AUTO, SPORT and RACE modes.

Manual gearshifting Yes Yes Yes

Auto Mode

The gearbox strategy requires that the vehicle always be started in automatic mode. In
this operating mode, the gearshifts are completely automatic based on a gearshift map
programmed in the Robotized Gearbox Node (NCR). The gearshift strategy has been
defined to get the best compromise between driving comfort, contained consumptions
and vehicle performance.
In this mode, the gear engaged is shown on the display together with the indication
“AUTO”.
Note: When driving in automatic mode, gearshifting can still be manually controlled
using the paddles on the steering wheel. When the driver uses the manual controls, the
gearbox temporarily goes back to Manual mode; during this interval, the indication
“AUTO” on the display flashes for about 5 seconds, after which the system goes back
to Automatic mode.

“Auto easy-exit mode” strategy

Every time the engine is started, the gearbox system is set to AUTO mode. If the
engine is turned off with either SPORT or RACE mode set, the next time the engine is
started, the “Auto easy-exit mode” strategy activates AUTO mode.
This condition is indicated by the word “AUTO” flashing on the display. This strategy
allows the driver to go back to SPORT mode simply by first shifting gears manually
(using the UP and DOWN paddles).
If the driver does not shift gears after two minutes of driving, the system automatically
activates AUTO mode.

Maserati Academy 27
GranTurismo MC Stradale Transmission

SPORT mode

In SPORT mode, the gearbox control system follows a gearshift control strategy more
focused on performance, with much shorter changing times between one gear and the
next in relation to RPM and the accelerator pedal position.
In SPORT mode, the exhaust pneumatic valves are open. In addition to giving the
engine a fuller and deeper sound, the lower counter pressure allows the engine to
increase its RPM more rapidly and enhance its maximum power. Downshifting is
accompanied by a more accentuated double-clutch effect.
Upon exceeding 4000 RPM and with the accelerator pedal 80% depressed, the fuel
cut-off strategy is activated (engine turned off and fuel supply cut off) during
gearshifting: this reduces the torque discharge time and the drop in engine RPM,
resulting in faster gearshifting.

RACE mode

Gearshifting in RACE mode is the most recent innovation of the robotized gearbox
system. This mode exploits the elastic energy of the transmission devices and results
in very fast gearshift times and absolutely outstanding performance. The result is a
gearshift time which drops to 60 ms (measured as acceleration dip), a value that
ensures the best sports handling and unrivalled driving emotions.

Maserati Academy 28
GranTurismo MC Stradale Transmission

In RACE mode, the GranTurismo MC Stradale can change gear in just 60 milliseconds
(0.06 seconds) thanks to a precise control and gear selection optimisation. The MC-
Race gearshift is available only if specific conditions are met: a temperature suitable for
all the vehicle systems has been reached and the accelerator pedal is at least 65%
depressed. When these conditions occur, MC-Race fast gearshift is activated, which is
indicated on the display with the red “MC-R” warning light.

RACE gearshift in 60ms. When?

Superfast gearshift is available in MANUAL RACE mode only.

When the vehicle F1 kit oil and engine coolant have reached the operating
temperature and RACE mode has been selected, the letters MC-R illuminate on the
display. This means that the following conditions have occurred:
• Engine speed > 5000 RPM
• Accelerator pedal depressed >65%
• Lateral acceleration <0.9g
• ASR not in operation
• No wheel slipping

Activation of this strategy is communicated to the driver via the

“MC-R” icon, which at first flashes on the display and then
remains permanently illuminated.

Maserati Academy 29
GranTurismo MC Stradale Transmission

Sequential downshifting strategy

Sequential downshifting of more gears can be obtained by setting one of the two
manual modes, SPORT or RACE, and holding the DOWN lever pulled and the brake
pedal depressed. The number of downshifts and the downshift speed depend on the
braking duration and intensity.

Redesigned hydraulic actuator to reduce shifting times

In order to further reduce the needed time for a gearshift operation it was necessary to
develop a system that does not require a centering in the neutral position during the
gearshifting.
This system involves removing the engagement actuator tappets and increasing the
lever/fork clearance, consequently increasing the actuator stroke by 2mm.
Simplification of the system, thanks to the elimination of the centering tappets and
relative seals, use of a piston shaft with only one seal, reduced machining work on the
engagement shaft due to the elimination of the sealing seats.

The interface components have been redefined:

• Gearshift finger
• Latch and relative drive bushings

The following internal components of the hydraulic actuator have been modified:
• Engagement piston sleeve
• Engagement shaft
• Selection movement lobe

Self-learning

All the self-learning procedures of the GranTurismo S model remain unchanged,

including “Fast gearshift”. This procedure should be performed after gear self-learning
cycle and subsequently at KEY OFF /KEY ON.
This self-learning procedure is required to self-learn the solenoid valve disengagement
times.
It must be performed each time a gearshift structure needs to be self-learned.
This must be performed after self-learning of the gearshift structure and after removing
the key.
The procedure is performed using the Maserati diagnostic tester with KEY ON in the
same way as for gearshift structure self-learning.
You will hear 13 strokes (selection) followed by 3 engagements of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
and 5th gear in sequence. 6th gear and Reverse will not be engaged.

Maserati Academy 33
GranTurismo MC Stradale Braking system

4. Braking system

The Maserati MC Stradale is the first Maserati equipped with a braking system with
carbonceramic discs (CCM) on the four wheels as standard. This has various
advantages compared to the conventional system. The greater braking efficiency
allows reducing the stopping distance from 100 km/to 0 km/h from 35 to 33 metres.

• Tandem brake master cylinder, vacuum brake servo (booster), separate hydraulic
brake circuit with cross layout.
• Front axle: Single-piece aluminium brake calipers with 6 pistons of different
diameter. Ventilated and perforated brake discs obtained with CCM technology,
diameter x thickness 380 x 34 mm. The single-piece brake calipers are more
resistant to deformation than compound brake calipers, which means that lighter
materials can be used, thus reducing the component weight. In addition, the brake
calipers are more efficient at any operating pressure and the brake pedal stroke is
hence shorter.
• Rear axle: Single-piece aluminium brake calipers with 4 pistons of different
diameter. Ventilated and perforated discs, diameter x thickness 360 x 32 mm.
• Electronically-controlled "Drum in Hat" parking brake (EPB) with "auto-apply",
"drive-away" and "pre-release" functions.

Maserati Academy 34
GranTurismo MC Stradale Braking system

Carbonceramic discs have a carbon fibre structure which is properly directed and
subjected to heavy stress inside the production mould, so that the discs produced are
equipped with channels for heat dispersion. Subsequently, they undergo a
carbonisation process in a kiln at approximately 1000°C in the presence of nitrogen
and then to further processes, such as radial drilling of the braking surface.
Compared to the discs used in Formula One vehicles, the road vehicle discs are further
processed by dipping them in a silicon bath, which makes them efficient also at low
temperatures.
The application of this new braking system has contributed to improving all the braking
performance parameters (enhanced deceleration/pedal load ratio, braking distances,
fading resistance) and to considerably reducing unsprung weights.

Finally, the CCM system provides a weight reduction of approx. 50% vs. cast iron
discs, because of the lower density of the ceramic material, and improves the vehicle
overall performance, achieving friction coefficients of approx. 0.36 vs. 0.28 of cast iron
systems. Being unsprung weights, they enhance the vehicle dynamics and improve
driving comfort.

Compared to conventional systems, response times are improved and performance

levels are maintained in the event of heavy-duty use. Among the most evident effects is
the elimination of the fading effect, which affects the control feeling perceived on the
pedal travel and load. In addition, the carboceramic discs have a practically unlimited
life in normal conditions of use, with evident advantages in terms of costs.
In general, the new braking systems must be run in and that is why they only reach an
optimal braking action after two or three hundred kilometres. The slightly reduced
braking action must be set off by increased pressure on the brake pedal.

Maserati Academy 35
GranTurismo MC Stradale Braking system

The CCM braking surface and the drive housing form one single
assembly that must not be separated, disassembled or modified
(machining, etc.), under any circumstance. The discs are
CAUTION available from the Maserati Spare Parts Department complete
with their own housing.

Minimum weight

Progressive identification number

Each disc is identified with a progressive number etched onto the housing. This
number allows tracing back to the process and product parameters.

MOVEMENT

CCM is a composite ceramic material and is therefore extremely hard but, at the same
time, "fragile”. As a result of this, greater caution is required and special care must be
taken during handling and/or fitting operations in the vehicle.
During transportation and internal handling, the disc must be protected with a special
polyethylene foam packing, which must be disposed of appropriately.
The following faults may be caused by incorrect handling :
• chipping and/or breakages
• cracks
The causes of the faults may be:
• accidental blows
• accidental falls
• wrong use of instruments and tools and/or improper fitting procedures

Maserati Academy 36
GranTurismo MC Stradale Braking system

• Be extremely careful with the edges (knocking against the outside diameter and
internal crown).
• Do not use levers or screwdrivers to move the caliper pistons backwards when
replacing the pads.
• Do not hammer on the braking surface to remove the disc of the hub (if necessary a
rubber hammer)
• Avoid causing compression stress to the braking surface (by closing it in a vice or
any other kind of equipment).
• Do not use levers or screwdrivers in the ventilation channels to move or rotate the
disc.
• When handling and/or fitting the disc (without its protective packing), we
recommend you use the centre hub as a gripping point.

Maserati Academy 37
GranTurismo MC Stradale Braking system

Disc inspection
Visually inspect the braking surfaces whenever the vehicle is brought to the workshop,
so that major surface variations can be identified.
The wear condition of the brake discs must be checked each time the brake pads are
replaced.
The wear condition of the discs is assessed by means of the following checks:

• Inspection after intensive use on the race track

• Visual inspection of the porosity/roughness of the disc surface
• Checking the disc weight loss
• Checking the damage on the edges of the brake disc edges (damage caused by
misuse)

DISC TO BE REPLACED DISC TO BE REPLACED

Maserati Academy 38
GranTurismo MC Stradale Braking system

The CCM discs are to be replaced when one of the following conditions occur:

1. Reaching the weight loss limit

2. Accidental disc damage (impact, dropping, etc.)
3. Braking surface damage because the brake pad is worn out.
4. Reaching the comfort acceptability limit (noise, feeling on the brake pedal)
5. Excessive drop in performance

The CCM discs are subject to wear only in extreme conditions of use (on the race
track) or when the discs reach temperatures higher than a certain temperature range
(>500°C). In these conditions, oxidation occurs in the carbon fibres in the CCM.

CHECKING THE DISC WEIGHT LOSS

If subjected to extreme thermal stress, e.g. use on the race track, the disc braking
surface may be heavily oxidised, to such an extent that the disc weight may be
reduced.
If the vehicle is used in these conditions, the discs need to be weighed in order to
ensure that the braking system is always in such conditions as to guarantee
performance in perfect safety.

Maserati Academy 39
GranTurismo MC Stradale Braking system

In order to reduce the measurement error to a minimum, the weight loss indications
must be double-checked by visually inspecting the discs and taking the following
precautions before weighing it:
•Thoroughly clean the disc before making the measurement (clean out the ventilation
holes and clean the housing)
•Check the wear condition of the surface
•Check for humidity (if found, dry the discs in an oven at 200°C for about 1h)
Chipped discs, but not so badly that they need to be replaced, will not affect the disc
weight (low density).
The CCM brake disc must be replaced when its weight is equal or lower to the MIN.
weight shown on the brake disc housing.

In contrast to cast-iron discs, the thickness of the CCM disc braking surface is not
indicative of the wear condition.
MAINTENANCE
For proper functioning and to obtain the maximum CCM brake disc efficiency, the
braking surface must be clean and free of any stains or grease and/or oil buildups.
This type of soiling may reduce the friction coefficient.
The deposits can be removed by cleaning the surface with solvents, such as acetone
(C3 H6 O) or alcohol.
Do not use any kind of brake cleaner (trichloroethane).
If the pads have any stains or signs of oil and grease, use the same degreasers as
used for the discs and/or lightly sand the surface with sandpaper.

ESC

The Maserati MC Stradale is equipped with ESC (Electronic Stability Control) anti-
yawing system, which incorporates all control systems: ABS, EBD, ASR and MSR).
This system controls all the dynamic functions of the vehicle in relation to braking,
stability in a bend, and traction control. The different dynamics are controlled by
various specific functions all integrated in the NFR (Bosch ESP 8.0):

• ABS (anti-lock braking system for the wheels during braking): it prevents the wheels
from locking during braking
• ASR (Anti-slip Regulation): prevents the wheels from slipping during acceleration.
• EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution): guarantees ideal distribution of the brake
force between the front axle and the rear axle based on the vehicle weight and the
dynamic conditions.
• MSR (Motor Schleppmoment Regelung): performs the electronic control function of
the engine braking torque in downshift condition to guarantee vehicle stability.
• MSP (ESP), (Maserati Stability Program): performs the individual control function
of the brake of each wheel to guarantee vehicle stability in a bend.
• HHC (Hill Holder Control): helps the driver during uphill starting preventing the
vehicle from rolling back in the time between brake pedal release and accelerator
pedal depression.
• HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist): assistance during emergency braking.

Hydraulic brake assist (HBA)

• Helps the driver in the event of emergency braking
• Function integrated in the Bosch ESP 8.0 ECU (NFR)
• It is based on information received from the hydraulic pressure sensor to measure
how fast the driver depresses the brake pedal. When emergency braking, the brake
pedal is in fact often depressed fast but not with sufficient force.
• If an emergency braking condition is detected, the system increases the brake
pressure by means of the hydraulic pump.
• This function reduces the stopping distance in the event of emergency braking, thus
increasing the safety level.

The GranTurismo MC Stradale rides on a new, custom-developed tyre from the Italian
tyre maker Pirelli – the same company that developed and supplies the tyres for the
Trofeo GranTurismo MC.
Designed to be at home both on the road and on the race track, the 20-inch Pirelli
PZero Corsa tyres are slightly wider than the standard tyres on the GranTurismo S and
offer even more grip.

TRACK use

Developed in conjunction with Maserati’s test engineers and based on the experience
from the Trofeo championship, the new PZero Corsa tyres have been designed to
move the handling-comfort balance of the GranTurismo S’s tyres further towards pure
handling.

While the GranTurismo S already had good track performance, the new tyres have
been developed to maximize grip in a very short time and, in concert with a more
precise "feedback" feeling for the driver, to maintain that grip for as many laps as
possible, thanks to rubber compounds derived from Pirelli’s racing experience.
The rear tyres have an asymmetric pattern with large tread blocks on the outside
shoulder for high lateral grip.

NOTE: 19'' tyres are not homologated for the Maserati MC Stradale. Winter tyres are
available: 245/35 – 20 front and 285/35 – 20 rear.

Suspensions

The vehicle is equipped with shock absorbing springs that are 8% more rigid than the
GranTurismo S model, and adopts a damping system with high-performance
calibration.
The vehicle is lower, the height reduced by 10 mm at the front and 12 mm at the rear.
The idea for this configuration derives from the experience in the Trofeo championship
where the drivers highly appreciated the improved grip and the direct and intuitive
driving sensation.
The diameter of the roll bars has also been increased with the front one now 25 mm
and the rear one 23 mm. These two modifications have contributed to reducing the
overall rolling angle.

Characteristics :
• Front: Quadrilateral with hub carrier and shock absorbers in forged aluminium,
specific gas shock absorbers in steel, specific coaxial helical springs.
• Rear: Quadrilateral with hub carrier and shock absorbers in forged aluminium,
additional radius bar for toe-in control; specific gas dampers in aluminium, specific
coaxial helical springs.
• Front roll bar: 25mm Ø
• Rear roll bar: 23mm Ø

The GranTurismo MC Stradale is equipped with a double airbag for the driver and the
front passenger. These airbags exploit a technology first used on the Quattroporte and
subsequently also on the GranTurismo. It is an "intelligent" system that independently
adjusts to the occupant’s height and controls airbag opening in the event of a collision.
The new passenger-side airbag with its "Low Risk Deployment" function is a
component at the top of range for occupant protection and guarantees an excellent
level of safety in head-collisions.
As well as improving passive safety, this new solution is also a major improvement in
the styling of the upper panel of the passenger-side dashboard, now more linear
thanks to the integrated airbag.

Note: The MC Stradale does not have side airbags in the seats.
Note: The MC Stradale is available with 4-point seat belts. In this case, the vehicle is
not equipped with pretensioners. If the customer requests the optional 4-point seat
belts at a later stage (on a vehicle where they are not fitted originally), a resistor should
be fitted on both the pretensioner connectors to simulate their presence.

MC Stradale Florence architecture

The Florence architecture of the MC Stradale's electric system is quite similar to that
used in the GranTurismo S. The only differences are the following:

• Elimination of the NTP ECU (TPMS), not available on this model.

• Elimination of the NCS ECU (Skyhook system), not available on this model.
• Elimination of the NAG ECU (seats with memory), not available on this model.

(*) Notes: Front parking sensors are not available; the vehicle is equipped only with
rear parking sensors fitted standard.

Adaptive Light Control

The already high effectiveness of the bixenon headlights has further been enhanced
with the orientation function that improves illumination of the track and the surrounding
areas with the resulting increase in the safety levels while driving at night or on winding
routes.
The low-beam ECU reads the instantaneous information on steering and the steering
angle as well as the driving speed and acts on special electric motors to turn the light
cones.
Main characteristics:

• The system is activated when the speed exceeds 5 km/h.

• The maximum headlight rotation towards the inside of the bend is 15° and towards
the outside 7.5° (always half).
• From 90 km/h to 120 km/h the swivel angle is reduced;
• Over 120 km/h and in reverse, the system is not activated for safety reasons.

Parking sensors:
The vehicle is equipped standard only with rear parking sensors integrated in the rear
bumper. Front parking sensors not available.
The icon of the car surrounded by symbols showing the distance from the obstacles
(max/med/min) is displayed on the instrument panel. The symbols illuminate in three
different colours based on the distance of the obstacles from the vehicle: max-green,
med-yellow, min-red. An acoustic warning is sounded when the symbols light up.

Cruise control:
When driving at a constant speed, Cruise Control is particularly useful, as it allows
setting the cruising speed that will automatically be maintained without having to act on
the accelerator pedal.
When the driver activates Cruise Control, the system automatically sets a special
gearshift strategy taking the gradient of the road into account and performs the
necessary calibration to guarantee maximum comfort and avoid unnecessary
gearshifts.

GranTurismo MC Stradale Electrical systems and devices

Maserati Multi Media System

The infotainment system onboard the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale derives from
the new IT platform developed by Magneti Marelli.
A 7" high-resolution TFT colour display situated in the centre of the dashboard allows
the user to view the CD player, the GPS navigation system (if the cartography is
available), the radio and the onboard computer (travel information and vehicle
settings). System performance has further been improved by using a 30GB automotive
hard disk on which the entire cartography can be uploaded and which also offers a
jukebox function instead of the CD player. On the one hand, the hard disk drive
considerably reduces the trip calculation times and, on the other hand, allows storing
up to 180 hours of music that can be copied directly from Audio CDs or downloaded to
MP3 files through the USB port situated in the passenger-side glove compartment.
The system also allows using your own MP3 reader; in effect, most of the readers
currently available on the market can be connected via the USB port so that you can
listen to your favourite music while travelling.
The GPS navigation system with its large colour display and 3D graphic processor
allows navigating with a very fetching perspective view.
The system is easy and intuitive to use thanks to the controls in the centre of the
dashboard, and the most frequently used functions are accessible in full safety by
means of the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. Again from the safety point of
view, the audio system, the navigation system and the telephone (if present) can be
activated by means of a voice control system.
The “Text to Speech" synthesizing system (artificial reproduction of the human voice)
further contributes to the driver’s safety as he or she can listen to SMS messages and
TMC traffic information without being distracted by looking at the display.
The Multi Media System is equipped with Bluetooth technology, for mobile phone
connection. This allows the user to make and receive calls through the speakers and
manage the contact list through the Multi Media System.

Maserati Academy 52
GranTurismo MC Stradale Electrical systems and devices

Bose Surround Sound system

The system is available on request. To play powerful and clear music, the Bose
Surround Sound System has two separate bass sources. The double low-frequency
sources are designed to work with the complete system and faithfully reproduce music
in a wide frequency spectrum.
Conventional approaches to multiple bass sources may prove to be problematic. If the
speaker is situated too close to the listener, the sound may be deafening; if it is too far
away, the sound may be too weak. Improper positioning may cause some frequencies
to distort, virtually killing the sound instead of boosting it.
Thanks to the close cooperation with the Maserati development team, the Bose
engineers took an audio project specifically developed for the Maserati MC Stradale as
an example, selecting the most suitable speakers and the most appropriate position for
best performance. The system includes a custom-made speaker with two
Nd®Richbass® woofers positioned between the rear seats, and one Nd®Richbass®
woofer in a customised bass reflex speaker at the front, powered by a single amplifier
with two-stage modulation.
The Nd®Richbass® woofer combines the lighter weight and the power of a neodymium
iron boron magnet with a design that allows reproducing the low frequencies of a much
bigger and heavier speaker. It is housed in a custom-made box concealed behind the
passenger-side footwell. These specific speakers and their positioning are key
elements that have allowed more uniform transmission of low-frequency sound,
guaranteeing improved musical impact without reducing the available space in the
vehicle. AudioPilot® noise compensation circuits:
The Bose Surround Sound system includes AudioPilot® noise compensation circuits
designed with an algorithm specifically dedicated to the acoustic profile of the Maserati
MC Stradale. The system helps maintain the high quality of the listening experience
onboard, compensating the effects of the noise generated by speed as well as external
acoustic phenomena not related to the vehicle speed. The AudioPilot® system rapidly
provides a wide compensation range and is able to best distinguish a continuous noise
from a brief and transitory one caused by bumps in the road and other sudden changes
in the road surface. This compensation is automatic so that the sound level perceived
and the tone balance remain constant. Thanks to this solution, the driver can
concentrate on the road and enjoy the absorbing experience of listening to good music
and feeling the sensation the artist wants to transmit.

Maserati Academy 53
GranTurismo MC Stradale Electrical systems and devices

The Bose Surround Sound System in the Maserati vehicles is controlled by a Bose
digital amplifier, which includes Centerpoint® and SurroundStage® signal processing
circuits and eight channels for equalization as required. The Bose system allows the
occupants to disable the Surround Sound and AudioPilot functions directly from the
MMS in order to optimise listening in disturbed conditions.

The system is equipped with twelve high-performance speakers and the following
electronic system components:

1) One 80 mm Nd (Neodymium) Twiddler for high and medium frequencies, positioned

centrally on the dashboard.
2) Two 36 mm Nd (Neodymium) Tweeters positioned in the passenger compartment, in
position with the
external rear-view mirrors.
3) Two 165 mm Nd (Neodymium) speakers for low and medium frequencies on each of
the door panels.
4) One 13 cm Nd®Richbass® woofer (Neodymium) powered by an amplifier with
two-stage modulation fitted in the passenger-side footrest.
5) Two 165 mm Nd (Neodymium) speakers for low and medium frequencies, on the
side panels of the rear seats.
6) Two 80 mm Nd (Neodymium) Twiddlers for high and medium frequencies, positioned
on the sides of the rear parcel shelf.
7) One 255 mm Nd Power® woofer powered by an amplifier, positioned centrally on
the rear parcel shelf.

iPod dock

On request, the Maserati MC Stradale can also be equipped with an iPod interface.
This allows the occupants to listen to music by connecting an iPod to the dock situated
in the glove compartment using an adapter cable and to use the main iPod functions
directly through the multimedia system (MMS). The iPod functions in the iPod Mode
menu are shown on the display in the centre of the dashboard.

A.C. system
The dual-zone air-conditioning system maintains the ideal temperature conditions in
the vehicle by automatically adjusting the interior temperature and ventilation intensity
in relation to the outside temperature, sunlight intensity and air humidity.
The fully electronic dashboard allows the driver and the passenger to separately set
the temperature from a minimum of 16°C to a maximum of 32°C, while the air flow
distribution through the two vents in the centre console ensures an ideal temperature
in the rear area as well.
The system is also equipped with a demisting sensor: if the window temperature
drops to below the dew point causing the window to mist up, the sensor automatically
activates to reduce the percentage humidity in the air.

Immobilizer and alarm system

Protection against theft is guaranteed by an immobilizer that acts by means of a

transponder fitted in the ignition key and an alarm system comprising:
- Motion-sensing alarm control unit (CAV)
- Anti-lifting sensor and motion sensors
- a perimeter protection
- Siren under the lid
- 3-button remote control for door locking/unlocking and luggage compartment opening.

The CAV is an electronic component supplied with the front ceiling light which is
connected to the serial A-bus line by means of the inside roof panel wiring.
It incorporates the motion-sensing and anti-inclination alarm sensors and it controls the
motion-sensors’ deactivation buttons.

Other electronic devices

Apart from the devices already mentioned, on request the onboard equipment can be
integrated with other electronic devices designed to enhance driving safety and
comfort.

• Internal (standard) and external (optional) electrochromic rear-view mirrors: they

darken progressively as the light intensity increases thus preventing blinding.
• Garage remote control (Home Link) on request: allows sending up to three different
frequencies of three different remote controls directly to the onboard vehicle system
positioned on the driver-side sun visor.

GranTurismo MC Stradale Bodywork

9. Bodywork

It is a longer car, with the front splitter and redesigned rear bumper adding 48mm to
the total length, but producing downforce to justify it.
The track experience and computational fluid dynamics have resulted in an
aerodynamic package that has 25 percent more front downforce and 50 percent more
rear downforce at 200km/h than the GranTurismo S.

The front splitter, side skirts and the

front guard panels all combine as
one unit to push the nose of the car
down at high speed, to cool the
brakes, extract the hot air from the
braking system and to provide
downforce along the length of the
car. The painstaking aerodynamic
design has also introduced two hot
air extraction fans in the engine
compartment lid.

The skirt has been particularly

detailed, blending into the guards to
maintain the underbody airflow and
create downforce.
The detailed aerodynamic designs
even include two hot air extraction
outlets in the bonnet.
