Dissemination of

research results

Alexandru Lucian CURTU

Uni Braşov 1
Manuscript submission
 Authors must check the journal format
carefully. Failure to follow the journal’s
guidelines can lead to rejection without
review.

 The corresponding author ensures that all

authors have had a chance to read and
comment on the final version of the
manuscript.
2
Manuscript submission
 Cover letter - briefly describes the
manuscript’s topic and its importance (see
an example on e-learning platform)

 Journals will request the names of

potential reviewers and their contact
information. This is a valuable opportunity
to steer the review process toward
reviewers who are well qualified to review
the paper 3
Manuscript review

4
After review
 Manuscripts will be returned with a wide
variety of criticisms, all of which (one
hopes) are designed to improve the quality
of the contribution

 Everyone gets hammered by reviewers

every now and then, so early career
writers should neither despair nor explode

5
Response to reviewers
 No papers are published exactly as they
are submitted

 If revisions have been suggested, these

should be incorporated unless the author
has very good reasons for not doing so

 Please see additional material

6
Oral presentation at a
scientific conference
To make the audience want to listen to you!
 Differences between presentations and
papers:
 Brief
 Attractive

 Interactive

 Visible
 Please see additional material on the e–learning
platform

Poster presentation
 A first step, a good exercise for an oral
presentation

 Check the requirements of the conference

 Visuals (images) are essential

 Once printed, the poster remains – good

evidence for your activity!
Uni Braşov 9
Exploitation of results
 Exploitation is the use of results for
commercial purposes or in public
policymaking

 Patents (may be equivalent to a scientific

articles)

 Applied sciences, a solution for industry

(e.g. new methods, products)
Uni Braşov 10
Exploitation of results
 National Office – OSIM,
https://osim.ro/

 European Patent Office – OEB

https://www.epo.org /

 Intellectual proporty right (IPR) issue (see

dedicated course)
Uni Braşov 11
Assignment

Uni Braşov 12
Assignment

 Make an oral presentation (e.g.

Powerpoint)

 Title of the presentation: your PhD topic

 The text of the presentation should be in

English

Uni Braşov 13
Structure of presentation
 Title, author, affiliation (1 slide)

 Background to the study

 Begin the Introduction with what is known

 Briefly summarize relevant current

knowledge of the topic (in order to
understand your research questions)
(max. 3 slides)

Uni Braşov 14
Structure of presentation

 Move on to what is not known (or a

problem with the known); Move on to areas
where there is less or no knowledge, or
where the evidence is conflicting = reason
for your research

(1-2 slides)

Uni Braşov 15
Structure of presentation
 State the research objectives (questions)
of your manuscripts (1-2 slides)

 Dissemination plan - Identify journals (at

least one from the red/yellow zone, see
UEFISCDI website) where you intend to
publish your results, conferences you want
to attend, include a timeline (1 slide)

Uni Braşov 16
Assignment
 The delivery should be in
English/Romanian maximum 7 minutes, 3
minutes will be for Q&A!

 Follow the recommendations for oral

presentations

 Adapt your delivery to the audience (your

peers, rather general public/ not
specialized)
Uni Braşov 17
Delivery
 Two ways for delivering your presentation:

 (1) In person during the seminar in

January (there is room for maximum 2
dates x 15 presentations) – slides should
be uploaded on the e-learning platform
OR
 (2) Record your presentation and upload it
as a video file on the e-learning platform
Uni Braşov 18
Delivery

 Deadline: 13th January 2023, at the latest

!!!!

 Either way it go, (1) or (2), the deadline is

the same!

Uni Braşov 19
Evaluation criteria
 Quality of the background information that
suggests why the topic is of interest (20%)
 Does the author identify a gap in scientific
knowledge? (20%)
 Quality and pertinence of the research
objectives (and the extent to which they
are ambitious, and go beyond the state of
the art in their field) (10%)

Uni Braşov 20
Evaluation criteria

 Quality of the dissemination plan (10%)

 Style and layout of the presentation (10%)

 Skills in presenting (20%)
