BE - SEMESTER–IV(NEW) EXAMINATION – WINTER 2022
Subject Code:3142006 Date:17-12-2022
Subject Name:Analysis of Mechanisms
Time:10:30 AM TO 01:00 PM Total Marks:70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Simple and non-programmable scientific calculators are allowed.

Q.1 (a) Differentiate between lower and higher pair giving examples. 03
(b) Find the degree of freedom for the kinematic linkage shown in 04
Fig.1.Comment on the result.
(c) What are the types of instantaneous centers? Explain giving neat sketches and 07
suitable examples.

Q.2 (a) With neat sketches explain any two inversions of slider crank mechanism. 03
(b) What is a Coriolis component of acceleration? Explain how its magnitude and 04
direction is determined.
(c) For the configuration of slider crank mechanism shown in Fig.2, Determine: 07
(i) the acceleration of slider (ii) the acceleration of point E (iii) the angular
acceleration of link AB. The crank OA rotates at 200 rpm CW. OA= 500 mm,
AB=1500 mm, AE = 450 mm
OR
(c) In Fig. 3 the angular velocity of the crank OA is 600 rpm. Determine the linear 07
velocity of the slider D and the angular velocity of the link BD, when the crank
is inclined at an angle of 75° to the vertical. The dimensions of various links
are: OA = 28 mm; AB = 44 mm; BC= 49 mm; and BD = 46 mm. The center
distance between the centers of rotation O and C is 65 mm. The path of travel
of the slider is 11 mm below the fixed-point C. The slider moves along a
horizontal path and OC is vertical.

Q.3 (a) What are longitudinal, transverse and torsional vibrations? Explain. 03
(b) What are the types of cams? Explain with neat sketch. 04
(c) A knife edge follower is operated by a plate cam having minimum radius of 07
25 mm. The follower is offset by 10 mm. The follower motion for first 60
degree of rotation is SHM with a lift of 35 mm. Draw the profile of the cam
for first 60 degree of cam rotation only. Assume all the relevant data if
required.
OR
Q.3 (a) What are the causes of vibrations? Explain. 03
(b) What are the laws of friction? Explain in brief. 04
(c) Derive an expression for ratio of belt tensions for open flat belt drive with neat 07
sketch and related equations. Also state if the expression is to be used for V
belt drive, what will be the changes in the expression.

Q.4 (a) What are the causes of unbalance? Explain. 03

(b) Derive the governing equation for single degree of freedom longitudinal 04
vibrations.
(c) Explain the gyroscopic effects in two-wheeler with neat sketches. 07

Q.4 (a) What are the types of band brakes? Explain briefly. 03
(b) Explain hydrodynamic lubrication with applications. 04
(c) Explain the gyroscopic effects on four-wheeler with neat sketches and related 07
equations.

Q.5 (a) Write a short note on single plate clutch. 03

(b) Differentiate between block brake and band & block brake with neat sketches. 04
(c) Derive the equation for path of contact for a pair of spur gears. 07

Q.5 (a) Define: circular pitch and width of space with reference to gears. 03
(b) Classify the gears used for transmitting power between parallel shaft. 04
(c) Explain how dynamic balancing is carried out when number of rotating 07
masses are having unbalance in different planes.
