UNIT 5: STATES OF MATTER:

1.1: STATES OF MATTER:

 Matter: anything that we can see and feel.
 Matter is made up of tiny particles.
 There are three states of matter, Solids, Liquids and Gases.
 The 3 states of matter behave differently from each other. The behaviour is called properties.

5.2: PARTICLE THEORY:

 This is a scientific mode of the structure of matter.
 All matter is made up of particles that are too small to be seen.

 Liquids and Gases are referred to as fluids because they can flow.

5.3: CHANGING STATE:

 When heat energy is added or removed from a substance, it can cause a change in state.
 Melting: the process of a solid changing into a liquid.
 Evaporation: the process of a liquid changing into a gas.
 Freezing:
 Condensation:
5.4: EXPALINING CHANGES OF STATE:
 Particles vibrate or move depending on how much energy they have.
 Energy can be transferred to or from particles.
 The energy of the particles can overcome the forces holding particles together.
