Three States of Matter

Mackenzie Davis
RST

What is Matter?
Matter is anything with mass and takes up
space.

What are the states of Matter?

There are three states of
matter:Solids,Liquids, and Gases

What is a Solid?
A solid is the simplest and most tangible state of matter.
A solid has these three main properties:
1. a definite shape
2. a definite mass
3. A definite volume.
A solid will always looks the same and take up the same
amount of space.

Examples of solid

What is a Liquid?
A liquid is the most fluid and ever-changing state of
matter:
A liquid has these three main properties:
1. does not have a definite shape
2. has a definite mass
3. has a definite volume
A liquid will always take up the same amount of space and
take the shape of its container.

Example of Liquid

What is a Gas?
A gas is the most complex and
difficult to understand state of
matter:
A gas has these three main
properties:
1. does not have a definite shape.
2. does not have a definite mass.
3. does not have a definite volume.

A gas does not always weigh

the same or take up the
same amount of
space.However, like a
liquid, a gas will always
take the shape of its
container, no matter the
size or shape of that
container.

Example of Gases

Phase Change

What is a Phase Change?

Is a change from one state of matter (solid, liquid, and
gas) to another.
Phase change are physical changes because:
-It only affects physical appearance, not
chemical make-up.
-Reversible

What happens during a phase change?

During a phase change heat
energy is either
absorbed or released.
Heat energy is released as
molecules slow down
and move closer
together.
Heat energy is absorbed as
molecules speed up and
expand.

Types of phase changes

Melting
Phase change from a
solid to a liquid
Molecules speed up,
move farther apart,
and absorb heat
energy

Freezing
Phase Change from a
liquid to a solid
Molecule slow down,
move closer together
and release heat
energy.

Vaporization (Boiling)
Phase change from a
liquid to gas.It
occurs at the boling
point of matter
Molecules speed up,
move farther apart,
and absorb heat
energy.

Evaporation
Phase change from a liquid
to a gas on the surface
of a liquid (occurs at all
temperatures).
Molecules speed up, move
farther apart, and
absorb heat energy.

Condensation
Phase change from a gas to
liquid.
Molecule slow down, move
close together and
release heat energy.

Sublimation
Phase change from a
solid to gas
Molecules speed up,
move farther apart,
and absorb heat
energy.

Melting & Boiling Point

Melting Point: The temperature at which a
solid changes into a liquid.
Boiling Point: The temperature at which a
liquid changes to a gas.
What is freezing point? Compare the
freezing and melting point in water.
