PUBLIC FACILITIES

Public facilities are needs provided by the government to the people for them
to lead a comfortable life. These facilities include education, transport, water,
electricity etc. these come under the ambit of Right to Life. These are basic
requirements of all citizens. For a nation to grow and progress, it is very
important for each and every member of the society to lead a comfortable life
and hence the government pays for it.
1. Education
Right to Education Act, 2009 has made progress in increasing the primary
education attendance rates in India. India’s improved education system is a
factor for its increased economic progress. Education in India is catered both by
private and public sector, public sector bearing the major responsibility. The
state- run schools charge very less or no fee. Schemes like Midday Meal has
encouraged a whole lot of parents to send their children to schools. Still there
is a 25 percent illiterate population thriving in India.
2. Healthcare
The public healthcare system of India comprises a set of state- owned health
facilities funded and governed by Government of India. The healthcare system
comes under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Treatments in
government owned healthcare systems are partially subsidised.
3. Electricity
The Ministry of Power provides electricity to all. There is a huge gap between
the demand and supply of electricity in India.
4. Transport
Transport in India is an important factor of economical development.
Industrialisation and technology have paved way for better transportation
facilities in India.
a) Railways – people make use of it to cover long distances. Indian railways are
the third longest and the heavily used system in India.
b) Roadways – India’s road network is world’s second largest road network.
Roadways are such a means of transportation that can be built anywhere even
in the difficult areas. Buses are a common transport vehicle that could be seen
in the roads. Governments of each state has a transport corporation of its own
which levy very little amount of money as the ticket fee. Many states have
introduced low floor buses for physically disabled and also air-conditioned
buses.
c)Metro rails – rapid transit in India consists of metro rail and monorail system.
The first rapid transit system in India was the Kolkata metro, which started
operations in 1984. Indian cities having population of more than two million
has planned for their own metro systems sanctioned by the government.
5. Water
The Constitution of India recognises the right to water as a part of Right to Life
under Article 21. There should be universal access to water. The government is
responsible for providing the citizens with safe, sufficient, accessible and
affordable water without discrimination. Both in the urban as well rural areas
of India, increasing population has put a big strain on water availability. In India
due to the lack of safe water in a year a lot of people die due to water borne
diseases.

Sources of Revenue for the Government


The government levies taxes from the citizens to generate revenue. The various
taxes levied are income tax, sales tax, entertainment tax, property tax etc.
