A Place to Stay

A Fan-Made Housing Module for Four Against Darkness

by William C. Smith Version 1.0/6-25-18

Introduction
Four Against Darkness(4AD) is a wonderful pencil-and-paper dungeon delve created by Andrea
Sfiligoi. After a few games you may have accumulated quite a fortune in excess gold, gems and
other treasures. Thus, the question must be asked, once you’ve stocked up on healing potions,
weapons and armor, how do you spend all of your excess, hard-earned spoils? The answer: A
Place To Stay.
A Place to Stay is an alternate module that simulates your expenditures on lodgings in between
adventures. As with all add-ons to a very open-ended game such as 4AD, this optional concept
is highly customizable so feel free to use it “as is” or change it up to suit your tastes.

What is the Purpose of this Module?

It provides an additional way to spend the treasure that your party has been
accumulating on their adventures.
It provides a more “persistent” feeling to your 4AD world…with a greater sense of
time and travel, and intrigue between adventures.
It provides a way for your to establish and customize your very own home as a
residence for your adventuring party!

But Where Am I?
Not using a campaign map and need a quick way to determine the location of your party in
between adventures as you heal up? Here is a chart you can use. Keep in mind, if you like your
location, you can choose to stay there multiple evenings in between adventures(if not, re-roll
the chart below each evening as you ‘travel’).
Travel Chart
1-2 Wilderness
3-4 Village
5 Town
6 City

How Far From Home?

If your adventuring party has their own house(see last page of this module), you can determine
how far(in days) your adventure was from your house by rolling a d6. For each day roll on the
chart above until you reach your house. As an alternate rule, you could decide that once you
buy a house it is situated in a central location near all of your adventures and the chart above is
thus unnecessary.
Resting in the Wilderness
When resting in the wilderness, two of your four party members may want to be “on watch”
during the evening and not enjoying a full night’s sleep(they will not gain the benefits of
resting). You could choose to have the entire party rest without a watch in place but this
substantially increases the chance of a wandering monster attack(or worse…ambush!). Please
note that resting may never be done within an adventure location unless the rules for a module
state otherwise.
Wilderness Resting

Wilderness Rest Cost Benefit

Two Party Members Sleep, 0 Two Characters Gain 1 health per evening*,
Two Keep Watch Chance of a Wandering Monster Attack 6/d6.
Four Party Members Sleep, 0 Four Characters Gain 1 health per evening*,

*If a monster attack/ambush occurs, no character regain health that evening.
If the party is attacked/ambushed by wandering monsters, use the following information:
(use charts from most recent adventure or 4AD core rulebook)
1-4 Minions
5-6 Weird Monster
The wilderness ambush is considered a sneak attack and the monsters attack first. Also, as
players are caught unaware and sleep-deprived , they may not use any shields, spells or scrolls
in the first round of combat.
Resting in Taverns and inns
If your adventuring party finds itself in a village, town or city, there are various accommodations
available to them. The good news is that there is no chance of a wandering monster in a tavern or inn!

only on the outskirts of town(use the wilderness resting rules on the previous page).
Resting in Your House
Tired of being “nickled and dimed” by the local hostels when you could have the comfort of your very
own home? Then buy one! They are not cheap, but they are a permanent solution to having a place to
stay and they can even be outfitted/deigned to your personal tastes!

You may sketch out your house on grid paper in the manner that best suits your tastes and imagination.
