INNOVATION IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY:
INFOSYS-BANGALORE DATA CENTER
Infosys, a multinational consulting
and IT firm, built a 250 square meter
data center in Bangalore for its
headquarters campus. The center
combines IT, electrical, and cooling
technologies to achieve a Power Use
Effectiveness score of 1.12. Infosys is
refining the data center to improve
performance and reach the design
target.

● Designed to achieve a PUE

[power use effectiveness
score]of 1. 12
● Achieved PUE of 1. 37 at <50%
load
● First project in India to
maintain high server hall
INFOSYS-BANGALORE DATA CENTER
Infosys made several innovative advancements in its data
center in Bangalore:

● High interior Air Temperatures: Instead of the more common 17-18°C,

the data centre operates at higher interior air temperatures of
roughly 27°C. This decision increases data centre efficiency by
reducing the need for energy-intensive cooling.
● Warm-Water Cooling System: Infosys installed a warm-water cooling
system that relies on evaporative cooling for the most of the year,
taking advantage of Bangalore's mild climate to maximise "free"
cooling from outside air while minimising the usage of compressors
and fans.
● Passive Rear Door Heat Exchangers (RDHx): To efficiently remove
● heat at the rack level, the data centre employs fan-less or passive
rear door heat exchangers located on the back of server racks.
Warmer cooling water is used by these heat exchangers to improve
cooling system efficiency.
● A sophisticated BMS automates and optimises IT operations and
cooling while closely monitoring server and ambient conditions. This
technology enables immediate corrective actions to be taken to
minimise inefficiencies and enhance overall energy performance.
● Infosys implemented high-efficiency uninterruptible power supply
(UPS) with hot-swappable modules, lowering power losses and
minimising maintenance downtime.
● Carbon Neutrality and Renewable Energy: Infosys
strives towards carbon neutrality in its
infrastructure and invests in renewable energy
sources, with renewables accounting for a large
share of the load.
● Continuous Improvement: Infosys continues to
improve the data center's performance in order to
achieve the design goal of a PUE of 1.12. For greater
energy efficiency, they intend to boost the IT load,
optimise cooling systems, and improve air
management.
● These innovations jointly contribute to the
energy-efficient design of the data centre, setting a
standard for the industry and demonstrating the
potential of meeting ambitious energy efficiency
targets even in tropical conditions.
SUZLON ONE
EARTH PROJECT
PUNE, MAHARASHTRA

•Architects: CCBA Designs

•Year: 2009
•Green Building Consultants: Environmental Design
Solution, Tanmay Tathagat, Kavita Jain

•Suzlon Energy is an Indian renewable energy company
focused on wind turbines for onshore and offshore
projects. Founded in 1995, it promotes sustainable
practices, providing clean energy solutions to combat
climate change and advance greener technologies
globally. Suzlon One Earth is a project that exemplifies
environment-responsive architecture. This approach aims
to create buildings that minimize environmental impact
and optimize energy efficiency
•Suzlon One Earth stands as a prime example of
environment-responsive architecture, proudly obtaining both LEED
Platinum and TERI GRIHA 5 Star certifications. The project showcases
an impressive 8% on-site energy generation through photovoltaic
panels and windmills, nearly achieving zero-energy status.

• Drawing inspiration from historic Indian campuses, the innovative

Land Scraper design emphasizes adaptability and energy efficiency.
The integration of abundant natural light, efficient ventilation, and
lush green spaces enhances the indoor environment, promoting
occupant well-being and productivity.

•Central to the project is the gathering space, the Brahmasthan,

fostering collaboration among its inhabitants while providing a
harmonious connection with nature through extensive gardens and
water features.

•By prioritizing sustainability and forward-thinking design, Suzlon

One Earth sets new standards for environmentally conscious
buildings, serving as a compelling model for global corporations
seeking to align their values with eco-friendly practices.

• This exceptional project exemplifies the possibilities of creating

structures that harmoniously coexist with nature, optimizing energy
usage and reducing environmental impact while embracing the
future of sustainable architecture.

NETAPP
BANGALORE –
DATA CENTER
•The following key energy efficiency technologies
were adopted for enhanced performance:
• Vertical stack configuration of AHU and power
delivery systems
• Flywheel-based rotary UPSs
• Free air cooling
• Integrated Building Management System (iBMS)
• Aisle containment for air management

PROJECT PERFORMANCE :
•the breakdown of the annual energy consumption.
The data indicate that less than 30% of the energy is
utilized for cooling, UPS, and lighting, yielding an
efficient data center with an annual PUE of 1.42.
FOUR COOLING METHODS : Rotary (Flywheel) UPS
• High efficiency: According to NetApp, the integrated
1. 100% free cooling flywheel UPS has an efficiency up to 96.5%.
2. Free cooling with return air mixing • No compressor-based cooling: Conventional static
3. Partial free cooling UPS battery systems need to be cooled to maintain
4. Mechanical cooling efficiency. The DRUPS system can operate in an
environment of up to 40OC without degradation in
performance. This high-temperature capability
provides a longer life and lower O&M costs compared
to battery storage systems.
• Lower conditioned space requirements: A DRUPS
system saves conditioned space normally required for
battery banks. This space can be used for other
purposes including greater IT capacity.
• Reduced environmental impacts: No worry about
replacement, recycling, and disposal of batteries
