WORKSHEET IN RESEARCH III No. 1

Topic: Introduction to Hypothesis Testing

Problem: To test the effectiveness of a treatment, a sample is selected from a normal population
with a mean of u = 40 and a standard deviation of ó = 12. After the treatment is administered to
the individuals in the sample, the sample mean is found to be M = 46.
a. If the sample consists of n = 4 individuals, is this result sufficient to conclude that there is
a significant treatment effect? Use a two-tailed test with a = .05
b. If the sample consists of n = 36 individuals, is this result sufficient to conclude that there
is a significant treatment effect? Use a two-tailed test with a = .05
c. Compute Cohen's d to measure effect size for both tests (n = 4 and n = 36).

Step 1. State the hypotheses and select an alpha level.

Step 2. Locate the critical region and draw a normal curve depicting the critical region in the distribution.

Step 3. Calculate the test statistic.

Step 4. Make a decision regarding H0. State your conclusion.

Step 5. Compute for the effect size.
