Engine Cadet Monthly Task Book #7 Kakha Nagervadze
This task book does NOT substitute the Cadet Training Record Book (TRB) and does not cover all the competencies the
Cadets are required to learn on board. It is solely intended to help monitoring their training progress and to provide
support and shore-based mentoring.

OPERATE ELECTRICAL,
ELECTRONIC AND CONTROL
SYSTEM
(TRB Ref No 6)
a) Describe a component Electrical power plant of vessel is a power complex, including a lot
providing electronic equipment of units, sensors, detectors , devices and other parts. Key elements
control (6.5.1). of ship’s power plant are the primary engine, generator and main
switchboard.
Electrical power plant is constant control parameter characterizing
the order of primary engines generators, auxiliary devices, the
quality of generated electric power, the degree of load on the
generators in the work process
Engine crew can control of all processes in engine from ECR from
the main remote control panel and main switchboard. Control
system and AMS on the vessel “FRONT FAVOUR” is SSAS-Pro. Vessel
has first class of automation.
e) Describe the operation of Auxiliary engines and generators are very important to the operation
alternators and generators and safe navigation of a vessel.
including start-up, run up to To ensure basic electrical service in case of engine failure,a sufficient
speed, paralleling and load
number of diesel generators should operate in parallel during
sharing, shaft generators and
emergency generators (6.3.1). maneuvering .
The electronic current produced by the generator is sent to main
switchboard and distributed to consumers
Synchronous generators are necessary for interconnecting AC power
systems, and generators must be added or stopped depending on
load changes .
They are connected parallel by means of transformer and
transmission lines. Under normal operating conditions all the
generators and synchronous motors in an interconnected system
operate in synchronism with each other.
If the load increases beyond the generated capacity, additional
generator must be taken in parallel. Similar, if the load decreases,
additional generators may be stopped.
The process of connecting one generator in parallel with another
generator is known as Synchronizing. The following parameters
must be same when synchronize one generator with another:
Voltage, Frequency and Phase.
Start-up operation and work of the generators units is possible both
manually and automatically. Start-up operation of the generator is
realized on the main console. Automatically: select the necessary
unit and push button “start”, DG is started, automatically is taken in
parallel. Manually: select the necessary unit and push button “start”,
DG is started and reached necessary RPM, than use Synchro Panel
to take DG in parallel (by ACB Control lever, Synchroscope,
Synchronized Lamp Status). Load is allocated automatically and
uniformly. If necessary, we can change load between DG manually
by Governor Motor lever.
The emergency generator should be ready for immediate use at all
time. When ESB de-energized the Emergency Generator starts
automatically then connected to ESB and get loaded. EDG must
have minimum two independent mean of starting. On the vessel
“FRONT FAVOUR’’ EDG has spring starter and electrical from the
battery. The emergency diesel generator should automatically start
during 45 sec. and take load in case blackout.
