● The nature of conflict and violence: Since the United Nations was
founded 75 years ago. Conflicts now tend to be less deadly and are often fought
between national groups rather than states.
● Homicides happen more frequently: Nearly half a million people
worldwide died in homicides, far exceeding the 89,000 deaths in active armed
conflicts and the 19,000 deaths in terrorist attacks.
● One fifth of terrorist attacks were unsuccessful: Conflict remains the
main driver of terrorism: more than 99 percent of all terrorism-related deaths occur
in countries involved in violent conflict or with high levels of political terror.

● Terrorism-related deaths: Terrorism-related deaths have decreased


dramatically in recent years, but the number of incidents has increased.

Violence

Today there are many conflicts, such as large-scale violence conflicts in Burkina Faso,
Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar, Nigeria and Syria.

● Burkina Faso, 2024: Security in Burkina Faso has deteriorated dramatically in


recent months, with violence increasing with attacks on civilians and
widespread human rights violations by non-state armed groups.

● Sudan, 2024: The war in South Sudan has caused one of the worst refugee
crises in Africa, and the third most serious in the world. There are more than 2
million displaced people in the country.

● Nigeria, 2022: In Nigeria, thousands of civilians were killed, injured or


displaced by the armed conflict between the armed groups Boko Haram and
the Islamic State in West Africa Province and the Nigerian armed forces in the
northeast of the country.
