Armed conflict
and violence.
● The nature of conflict and violence: Since the United Nations was
founded 75 years ago. Conflicts now tend to be less deadly and are often fought
between national groups rather than states.
● Homicides happen more frequently: Nearly half a million people
worldwide died in homicides, far exceeding the 89,000 deaths in active armed
conflicts and the 19,000 deaths in terrorist attacks.
● One fifth of terrorist attacks were unsuccessful: Conflict remains the
main driver of terrorism: more than 99 percent of all terrorism-related deaths occur
in countries involved in violent conflict or with high levels of political terror.

Violence

Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar, Nigeria and Syria.
● Sudan, 2024: The war in South Sudan has caused one of the worst refugee
crises in Africa, and the third most serious in the world. There are more than 2
million displaced people in the country.
