What is an electric circuit?
In order for electrons to flow they need a closed circuit. An electric circuit provides a
complete, closed path for electricity. The parts of a circuit consist of a load or resistance;
wires; and a switch. The source of energy can be a battery, thermocouple, photocell or
an electric generator. The load is the part of the circuit that uses the power. The load of
the circuit always offers some resistance to the flow of electrons. As a result energy is
convert into heat, light or mechanical energy. The switch is an electric circuit is used to
prevent the flow of electrons. This is called an open circuit
There are two types of electric circuits, the series and parallel circuit.

Electric circuit - is the pathways for electricity to flow.

Components of Circuit

 Load - commonly represented by a bulb or any electrical component that

consumes electricity.
 Supply - Commonly represented by a cell or a battery
 Switch - an electrical device that opens or closed a circuit.

A simple circuit

Types of Circuit

1. Open Circuit - a type of circuit that has an open path for current to flow. It means
that current cannot flow in open circuit.

Switch

The switch is said to be “OPEN” the current can’t flow into the circuit and the
bulb is “OFF”
2. Closed Circuit - a type of circuit that has a closed path for current to flow. It means
that current can flow in a closed circuit.

The switch is said to be “CLOSED” the current can’t flow into the circuit and the bulb is
“ON”

What is an electric circuit- Series and Parallel Circuits?

Types of Circuits

CLOSED CIRCUITS & OPEN CIRCUITS

A closed circuit has a complete path. A open circuit does not. In order for a circuit to
work, it must be closed; thus, open circuits aren’t functional. That may be a hard idea to
grasp at first, but circuits are very different from open restaurants or open doors. When
a circuit is open, the current can’t flow through.

A series circuit is a circuit in which the same current flows through all
components of the circuit. The current only has one path to take. If you’ve ever had
trouble with Christmas lights, you might know a little about series circuits. If the lights
are constructed in a series circuit (as many holiday lights are), when one bulb is missing
or burnt out, the current cannot flow and the lights won’t turn on.
A parallel circuit is a circuit in which the components are arranged so that the
current must break up (with bits flowing across each parallel branch) before meeting
and combining again. Because the current divides, each component is assured a charge.
And if one path breaks, the other paths will still work because they aren’t reliant on each
other
A short circuit is a circuit that allows the current to travel along an
unintended path. In this way, it encounters little (or no) resistance. The piece of the
circuit bypassed by the short circuit may cease to function and a large amount of
current may begin flowing. This causes the wires to heat up and can potentially cause a
fire. As we’ve already discussed, circuit breakers and fuse boxes are put in place to cut
off circuits as a safety measure when a short circuit occurs. A short circuit is not, as
some believe, just any electrical malfunction.

Series Circuit
A series circuit there is only one path for the electrons to flow (see image of series circuit).
The main disadvantage of a series circuit is that if there is a break in the circuit the
entire circuit is open and no current will flow. An example of a series would the lights on
many inexpensive Christmas trees. If one light goes out all of them will.

Parallel Circuit
In a parallel circuit the different parts of the electric circuit are on several different
branches. There are several different paths that electrons can flow. If there is a break in
one branch of the circuit electrons can still flow in other branches (see image of parallel
circuit). Your home is wired in a parallel circuit so if one light bulb goes out the other
will stay on.

The current only has one path to take.
a. Open Circuit b. Closed Circuit c. series circuit d. parallel circuit
5.______is the pathways for electricity to flow.
a. Load b. Electric circuit c. Supply d. Switch
6. _______commonly represented by a bulb or any electrical component that consumes electricity.

7. _________ an electrical device that opens or closed a circuit.
a. Load b. Electric circuit c. Supply d. Switch
8._________ commonly represented by a cell or a battery.
a. Load b. Electric circuit c. Supply d. Switch
9. Draw the schematic diagram of parallel circuit.
10. Draw the schematic diagram of series circuit.

B. Test your Understanding! Write the letter on a separate sheet.

1. Which of the following is not true
a) In order for electrons to flow they need a closed circuit
b) the source of energy in a circuit can be a battery, thermocouple or photocell
c) there are two types of circuits, series and parallel
d) The load of a circuit offers no resistance to the circuit
2. The way a fuse works is
a) as current in the wire increases beyond a certain point a chemical change occurs which
converts the conducting material to an insulating material. This cuts off the flow of current.
b) )the fuse contains a thin strip of metal inside a closed container. When too much current
flows the strip melts and this causes a break in the circuit

c) a fuse works when the metal inside expands from the heat and break the container
causing a short.
d) a fuse contains a vacuum which allows current to flow. When too much current flows
through the fuse the vacuum is lost and the circuit is broken.

3. What is the main disadvantage of a series circuit?

a) the cost to maintain the parts for a series
b) the main disadvantage of a series circuit is that if there is a break in the circuit the
entire circuit is open and no current will flow.
c) a series circuit can only be used with low current
d) a series circuit can only be used with low voltage loads

a) Two of the wires run parallel to each other and contain 120 volts in the US.
b) In Europe the potential difference is 220 volts
c) all 3 wires are live and contain current
d) The third wire does not contain current but is connected to the ground
5. Why is your home wired in a parallel circuit
a) When appliances in your home are connected in a parallel, each of them can be put on
