LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
TOPICS TO BE COVERED:
• DEFINITION OF ELECTRICITY
• WORKING OF ELECTRIC CELL
• WORKING OF TORCH BULB
• ELECTRIC CIRCUIT
We use electricity to run various appliances in our day to day life
which make our work easier
Electricity helps in illuminating our surrounding when there is
scarcity of light . Electricity is produced at power station which is
also known as power plant.
If the supply of electricity fails we
use torch for providing light. The
torch gets electricity from cell.
Even for conducting several
activities related to electricity we
should not attempt with electric
wires or sockets as it can be
dangerous if not handled properly.
We should always use electric cell
for performing various activities
related to electricity.
An electric cell produces electricity from
the chemicals stored inside it.
After the chemicals are used up the cell
stops functioning and has to be replaced by
a new one. Every cell has two terminals: The
positive sign(+) denotes positive terminal
and the negative sign(-) denotes negative
terminal

APPLICATIONS OF
ELECTRIC CELL
TORCH BULB
● The thin wire that gives off light is
called the filament of the bulb.
● The filament is fixed to two thicker
wires, which also provide support to it.
● One of these thick wires is connected
to the metal case at the base of the
bulb.
● The other thick wire is connected to
the metal tip at the centre of the base.
● The base of the bulb and the metal tip
of the base are the two terminals of
the bulb.
● These two terminals are fixed in such
a way that they do not touch each
other.
Caution:

Never join the two terminals of the electric cell without

connecting them through a switch and a device
like a bulb.
If you do so, the chemicals in the electric cell get used up
very fast and the cell stops working.
We can see 6 arrangements
regarding cell, wires and bulbs.
Among the six following
arrangements bulb glows only in
the first and the last one.
In (b) and (c) the wires are
disconnected, hence the bulb
doesn't glows.
In (d) and (e) also the bulb doesn't
glow because the two ends of the
wires are connected to the same
terminals of the cell.
In (a) and (f) the wires are
connected to the two ends of the
cell and they are not
disconnected as well. Hence the
bulb glows.
The electric circuit

filament of a bulb means a break in the path
of electricity between the terminals of the
cell.
Activity-3 NCERT (Page-119)
Take a torch bulb and a piece of wire. Remove
the plastic covering at the two ends of the
wire. Wrap one end of a wire around the base
of an electric bulb . Fix the other end of the
wire to the negative terminal of an electric cell
with a rubber band. Now, bring the tip of the
base of the bulb, that is, its other terminal in
contact with the positive terminal of the cell.
Does the bulb glow?
Yes it glows. Now move the bulb away from
the terminal of the electric cell. Does the bulb
remain lighted? No
This is similar to what we do when we switch
our torch on or off.

CLASS WORK
1. Name any five devices which use electricity from cells or batteries for their working.
Ans. Calculators, clock, toys, torches, camera are some of the devices which uses electricity from cells or
batteries for their working.

2. What is meant by electric circuit?

Ans. The electric circuit is an arrangement that provides a pathway for the flow of electric current. It is a
device comprising of switches, bulbs, wires and an electric cell.

3. How does a fused bulb differs from a normal bulb? What happens to the circuit if the bulb gets fused?
Ans. In a fused bulb the thin wire or filament gets broken while in a normal bulb there is no broken filament.
If we have a fused bulb in a circuit then their is a break in the path of electricity between the terminals of
the cell. Since no electricity passes through the broken filament of the fused bulb, a fused bulb does not light
up even it is connected properly to a cell.
