Directions: Read the given problem and answer the following.

B. Analysis

1. What do you observe about their corresponding sides?

- 𝐴𝐵 ↔ 𝐷𝐸
- 𝐵𝐶 ↔ 𝐸𝐹
- 𝐴𝐶 ↔ 𝐷𝐹
This read 𝐴𝐵 corresponds to 𝐷𝐸, 𝐵𝐶 corresponds 𝐸𝐹, and 𝐴𝐶 corresponds 𝐷𝐹.
2. What can you say about the ratio of their corresponding sides?

𝐴𝐵 𝐵𝐶 𝐴𝐶 4 6 8
𝐷𝐸
= 𝐸𝐹
= 𝐷𝐹
; 6
= 9
= 12

2
If we reduce the ratio between their corresponding sides, it is equal to 3

3. What can you conclude about their corresponding sides?

BAGUMBAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
M.L.Q St Bagumbayan, Taguig City

- The ratios of the corresponding sides of the two triangles are equal or in proportion.
- Therefore, ΔABC is similar to ΔDEF
- In symbol, we can write ΔABC~ ΔDEF, the symbol “~” reads as “is similar to”

Similar figures and congruences have the same size and shape. When two figures are
congruent, you can slide or turn them so that they fit exactly on the other one.

Similar figures have the same shape but not necessarily the same size.

For example, observe the image of the man. The picture has the same shape but a different
size. therefore, the pictures are similar.

Two figures are similar if;

1. Corresponding angles are congruent and;

2. The corresponding sides are proportional

The ratio of the lengths of corresponding sides is called the “similarity ratio” or “scale factor”

Examples;

M.L.Q St Bagumbayan, Taguig City

∆ MON ~ ∆ DAY
1. Find;
a. The similarity ratio
b. m∠A
c. AY
2. Find MN and m∠M

3. Find;
a. The perimeter of ΔDAY
b. The perimeter of ΔMON
c. What is the ratio of the perimeter of ΔDAYto
the perimeter of ΔMON
d. Compare your answer to part ( c ) to the
similarity ratio. What can you conclude about the ratio of the perimeter of similar
figures?

Answer:

1. Find the similarity ratio, m∠A, DY, and m∠D

a. Since DA and MO are corresponding sides, the similarity ratio is
𝐷𝐴 4 2
𝑀𝑂
= 6
= 3
b. ∠A corresponds to ∠O, so m∠A = m∠O and they are both right angles. So,
their measure is 90°.
c. Write a proportion to solve for RI.
𝐷𝐴 𝐴𝑌 4 𝐴𝑌
𝑀𝑂
= 𝑂𝑁
, 6
= 9

(4)(9) = (6)(AY)
36 = (6)(AY)
AY = 6

2. Find MN and m∠M

Write a proportion to solve for AY

𝐷𝐴 𝐷𝑌 4 8
𝑀𝑂
= 𝑀𝑁
, 6
= 𝑀𝑁

(4) (MN) = (6)(8)

4(MN) = 48
BAGUMBAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
M.L.Q St Bagumbayan, Taguig City

MN = 12
Since ∠D corresponds to ∠M, so m∠D = m∠M, m∠D = 50, so m∠M = 50

3. Answer
a. The perimeter of ΔDAY
- Perimeter of ΔDAY = 4 + 6 + 8 = 18

b. The perimeter of ΔMON

- Perimeter of ΔMON = 6 + 9 + 12 = 27

c. What is the ratio of the perimeter of ΔDAYto the perimeter of ΔMON?

- The ratio of the perimeter of two triangles

𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 Δ𝐷𝐴𝑌 18 2
𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 Δ𝑀𝑂𝑁
= 27
= 3

d. Compare your answer to part ( c ) to the similarity ratio. What can you conclude about
the ratio of the perimeter of similar figures?
- The similarity ratio of the two triangles is equal to the ratio of their perimeter.

Example:

1. Find the perimeter of

Quadrilateral EFGH and PQRS
2. Find the m∠F, m∠G,
and m∠H
3. Find the m∠P and m∠R
4. Find the measure of FG
5. Find the scale factor of
the corresponding sides.

C. Abstraction
1. Similarity Ratio is also called as? (Scale Factor)
2. The symbol “~” is read as? (Similar to)
3. Similar figures should have the same size and shape.
