Corrosion or Rusting of Metals

The reaction of metal with oxygen to form oxides.

Corrosion or rusting is destructive to iron which
is the widely used metal due to its abundance.
Ways of Preventing Corrosion of Metals
1. Coating metal with organic
materials such as paint, lacquer,
grease, or asphalt.

2. Coating (by electroplating) with another
metal such as zinc, copper, nickel, chromium or
tin.

Note: the electroplating of iron helps not to

have surface corrosion.

3. Coating with ceramic enamel, like that used in sinks,

bathtubs, stoves, refrigerators and washers.

4. Coating with adherent oxide, which is formed by exposing iron to
superheated steam, giving it an adherent coating of Fe₃ O₄

6. Cathodic Protection or Sacrificial Corrosion which is the attachment or
connection of a more active metal to the metal which needs protection from
rusting.
EXAMPLE: An iron pipe buried in the soil is connected by a wire to a more
active metal, such as zinc, aluminum, or magnesium.
The more active metal slowly consumed and must be replaced periodically.
