(answers may vary)
4. Everyone should read books to know more.
5.Fist fight is the best way to deal with someone you
hate.

C. Lesson Proper
Let us go back to the expressions that I introduced to
you last monday and the story that I gave to you
yesterday.

The teacher will present the story to the class again.

Man in Dapitan (a Summary)

Loreto Paras-Sulit
There were three boys named Lope, Hugo and
Felix who were arguing about an answer to a question
about catechism. They were about to have a fist fight
when suddenly a man interrupted and told them that a
fist fight may prove who is the strongest among them
but not who is right. The man told the boys, “If you
want to find out who is right, open your books, read the
answer very well, and see which of you gave the one
exactly like it. One of you may win with his fists, but
that would not prove that his answer is correct.” The
boys obeyed the man's words and realized that he is the
new guy who just arrived in their small town Dapitan.

They all became acquainted with each other until

one day, the man asked the boys if they wanted to learn a
new language. The boys agreed and studied English. As
they were studying, the man noticed Lope thinking very
deeply and found out that his mother has an eye
condition and is almost blind. The man offered help to
Lope and said that he would pay a visit and check his
mother's eyes.

The man eventually performed an operation to

Lope's mother's eyes and it was successful. Before
leaving, Lope's father asked for the name of the man and
the man answered that he is Jose Rizal.

Can you give me the expressions that you can use if 1. I completely agree with you
you want to express your agreement in an assertion? 2. I couldn’t agree more
3. I have no objection with that
4. You’ve made a good point
5. No doubt about it

Now, let’s go back to the story. Can you give the “We can solve any problem by reading
assertion of Rizal on how to solve any problem? books and finding a solution in a peaceful
way.”

“I completely agree with Rizal. A problem

can be solved in a non-violent way.”
Who would like to agree with what Rizal said? Kindly
state your agreement using the expressions.
1. I beg to disagree
2. I don’t agree with you on that
That's a good point. Now, can you recall the
3. I’m sorry but…
expressions that you can use if you want to express
your disagreement in an assertion? “I’m sorry but Rizal is wrong. We can use
violence sometimes to solve our problem.”
Let’s imagine that you wanted to disagree with Rizal.
Can you state your disagreement to Rizal’s assertion
using the expressions?
1. I see what you mean but…
2. That idea is okay but…
I get your point. Now, how about the expressions that 3. I understand that, but…
you can use if you want to express your partial
disagreement in an assertion?
I understand Rizal’s point but I think by
Let’s imagine again that you are not totally disagreeing following the advice from other people
with Rizal. Can you state your partial disagreement to around us, we can solve our problem.
Rizal’s assertion using the expressions?

You have your point.

I’m glad that you already know how to identify the

assertion within the text, you can also make your
assertion and finally you already know how to react to
an assertion using the expressions.

Now, I want you to note this. I will give you a short

background on what debate is and how debate works.

Do you have any idea what the debate is? “ It is a formal discussion on a particular
topic in a public meeting in which opposing
arguments are put forward.”

Very good. Now, I will give you an idea on how to

conduct a simple debate.
1. Introduce your topic.
2. Assign the Affirmative and the Negative.
3. Give time for research.
4. Keep track of time.
5. Make a judgment.

D. Application
Judge Me na Lang!
Presentation of the activity from the previous day.
Direction: Present a simple debate about the assertion
given to you. Use the expressions in taking your stand.

will be given a chance to make a rebuttal after each
side has spoken.

Criteria

Reasoning- 5

E. Generalization
“Why is it necessary to take a stand in an argument?”
“Taking a stand in an argument is necessary
to assert one's position, contribute to the
exchange of ideas, and potentially drive
towards resolution or understanding.”

F. Evaluation

Direction: Analyze the assertion below. React to the

assertion by taking a stand. You can agree, disagree or
partially disagree on the assertion. Use the expressions
in stating your stand. Write your answer in a ½
crosswise.

ASSERTION: A fist fight can determine the winner of

the argument but not who is right.

G. Assignment
Direction: Research on how to become a good debater.
