Example 3

Tasmin has £305 in her bank account. She uses £146 to

buy a television. How much money is left in her account?
1. You need to subtract 146 from 305, so set out the subtraction as usual.
2. In the column furthest to the right, 9
2 1 2 1 1
305 305 305
5 is less than 6 so you need to borrow
– 146 – 146 – 146
from the middle column. But there’s
a 0 there, so you have to borrow from
the column furthest to the left first. 9 9 9
2 1 1 2 1 1 2 1 1
3. Once the borrowing is sorted, 305 305 305
subtract each column as usual. – 146 – 146 – 146
9 59 159

So she has £159 left.
