CONTINUOUS ZEROS WITH REGROUPING

Objective: Subtract 5 or more digit numbers from 6 or more digit number with 3
continuous or non-continuous zeros in both the minuend and subtrahend
with regrouping.

Review

Let us see how well you have retained the previous lesson. Do what is asked of
you to do. Remember this is your previous lesson.

A. Subtract the numbers inside the rectangles from the number inside the oval.

1) - 593 843

2) - 934 527 3) - 625 195

1 502 362

4) - 861 289 5) - 758 732

The Red Cross is an organization which helps the poor people.

During the Red Cross Week, one of the Divisions in NCR was given 121
000 tickets to sell for Save a Life Project. The division was able to sell
96 032 tickets. How many tickets were not sold?

Let us answer some questions about the problem.

a) Who helps our poor countrymen?

b) As a person, would you like to share in the fund raising campaign of
the Red Cross? Why?

Now, let's start solving the problem.

121 000 - 96 032 = N

tickets given tickets sold tickets not sold

1. 121 000 There are three consecutive

- 96 032 zeros in the minuend, so we
0 10 regroup all the places starting
2. 121 000
- 96 032 from the left most digit other
than the zero.
1 10 10

3. 121 000
- 96 032

1 10 9 10

4. 121 000
- 96 032

2
1 10 9 9 10

5. 121 000 Now, you can subtract.

- 96 032
24 968 Subtract 2 from 10 equals 8.
Subtract 3 tens from 9 tens equalS 6
tens. Subtract 0 hundreds from 9
hundreds equals 9 hundreds.
Subtract 6 thousands from 10
thousands equals 4 thousands. Then
subtract 9 ten thousands from 11 ten
thousands equals 2 ten thousands.
The final answer then is 24 968
tickets unsold.

Can you now follow the steps?

Let’s try another exercise.

a. 150 087 There are two consecutive

- 78 462 zeros in the minuend, so we
regroup at 3 places starting
from thousands place.
4 10

b. 150 087
- 78 462

4 9 10
Now you can subtract.
b. 150 087
- 78 462

4. 2 900 603 5. 1 485 000

- 1 569 241 - 810 207

How do you find the exercises? Why?

Wrap Up

Always remember that to subtract numbers with regrouping and with

continuous zero in the minuend always regroup all the places starting
from the left most digit other than zero.
