Teacher Managing this Task: Mr O’Neill

Head of Curriculum Approval Mrs Singh

Purpose of Assessment:
This is Task 1 of the four assessment tasks for Year 9. It is worth 25% of the Assessment Mark for the year. The tasks are
designed to test Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. Students are encouraged to view their work on
the task not just as a personal achievement but as an opportunity to learn and develop their mathematical skills.

The task will assist student learning as students receive feedback from teachers on their strengths and weaknesses, demonstrated in
the task, and teachers evaluate and adapt their teaching program in response to student performance.

Description of Task [Including Examinable Topics and Textbook References]:

A written test that will be one period in length and be completed during normal class time.
Topics: Chapter 2 – Expressions, Equations and Inequalities and Chapter 5E-H – Measurement: Surface Area and Volume and
Chapter 3 – Right Triangles from the Cambridge Mathematics 9 Stage 5.3

Preparation: Students are encouraged to review class notes, textbook and chapter review exercises, topic tests and past papers
posted in OneNote.

Materials: Students must bring their own NESA approved calculator and a blue or black pen.

Marking Scheme: Each question will be labelled with its assigned number of marks. Students are encouraged to use the number of
marks as a guide to the amount of working required.

There will be two sections in the test paper:

Section 1 (worth 40%) will be comprised of questions designed on common material and attempted by all Year 9 classes.

Section 2 (worth 60%) will be comprised of questions designed specifically for the 9PL1 and 9PL2 classes.

The assessment task will be graded according to the mark allocation per question. Students will receive full marks for a correct solution,
and part marks for incorrect solution that contains some valid working. Students who correctly carry an error forward will be eligible for
some marks, unless the error makes the question substantially easier.
