1. What do you think is the most important social problem facing the world today?

Why do
you feel this is the most important one? Discuss the effects on groups or society?

The most important social problem facing the world today is climate change. It is a complex issue with
far-reaching effects on groups and society. Climate change is already causing more extreme weather
events, such as hurricanes, floods, and droughts. These events are displacing people, destroying homes
and businesses, and disrupting food production. Climate change is also causing sea levels to rise, which
is threatening coastal communities around the world. If we do not take action to address climate
change, it will have devastating consequences for our planet and our way of life.

2. What is the Thomas theorem? Do you agree or disagree with this theorem? Why?

The Thomas theorem states that "if men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences."
This means that if people believe that something is a social problem, then it will have real effects on
their lives, even if the problem is not actually real. For example, if people believe that poverty is a social
problem, then they may be less likely to help the poor, which can make poverty worse. I agree with the
Thomas theorem. It is important to understand how our beliefs about social problems can affect our
actions and the world around us.

3. Social scientists argue that a system-blame approach to social problems is important

because social structures and institutions are often at least partially to blame for social
conditions. Do you agree or disagree that the system-blame approach is important? Do
you feel that the person-blame or the system-blame approach does a better job of
explaining social problems?

I agree that the system-blame approach to social problems is important. Social structures and
institutions can often create or exacerbate social problems. For example, the system of racism in the
United States has created and maintained racial inequality. The system-blame approach can help us to
understand how these social structures and institutions work and how they can be changed. I do not
think that the person-blame or the system-blame approach is better at explaining social problems. Both
approaches are important and can help us to understand different aspects of social problems.

4. What is a social problem that affects your life? How does it affect you, your family,
and/or your community?

One social problem that affects my life is poverty. I grew up in a low-income family and I have seen
firsthand the effects of poverty on people's lives. Poverty can make it difficult to afford food, housing,
healthcare, and education. It can also lead to stress, anxiety, and depression. Poverty can have a
negative impact on families and communities. I believe that we need to do more to address poverty in
the world. We need to raise the minimum wage, provide affordable housing, and make healthcare more
accessible. We also need to invest in education and job training programs.

5. Discuss one social problem in the world today. What do you think should be done to help
solve this social problem?

One social problem that I think is important to address is gun violence in the United States. Gun violence
is a leading cause of death for young people in the United States. It is also a major cause of injury and
trauma. Gun violence can have a devastating impact on families and communities. I believe that we
need to do more to address gun violence in the United States. We need to pass stricter gun control laws,
invest in mental health services, and address the root causes of gun violence, such as poverty and
inequality.
