How did Magayon Festival

became famous in Legazpi City, Albay

CHAPTER 1
 INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Magayon Festival is a yearly celebration derived from the legend of the Mayon Volcano to
honor the province's bounty and beauty. The festival is held in Legaspi City of the Albay province
on Bicol island. One of the highlights of this event is the stage reenactment of the tragic love story
of Daragang Magayon and Panganoron whose fatal deaths gave birth to the volcano.The reason for
this celebration dates back to ancient days following the death of the love-struck woman,
Daragang Magayon. Folklore has it that the death of the beautiful woman resulted in the creation
of the Mayon Volcano. The floating clouds, the locals believe, are symbolic of the spirit of
Daragang’s lover. Little wonder the name of the festival, Magayon Festival, is actually derived
from a local word that means ‘beautiful’. During the celebrations, the streets come alive with the
presence of diverse cultural events where the locals showcase their traditional way of life. The
great thing about this festival is that it lasts for at least two weeks. It usually begins in the middle
of February and closes on the last day of the month. This means you have plenty of time to join in
the festivities and meet the locals of the Albay province. Festivals in the Philippines are known for
all sorts of sports competitions, so it’s no surprise that there’s plenty of those during the Magayon
Festival. A trail run is usually held on the second day of the festival, and it tends to start really
early in the morning. If you want to show everyone just how in shape you are, this is an awesome
way to partake in the festivities.

Importance of the Study

The importance of knowing the reason why we should be grateful of this research study is
to regain knowledge that we have one of the most famous and most celebrated festivals in all of
the bicol region specially in albay province which is the Magayon festival . It is important that we
should recall and still improve our belief toward this type of event.this also aims to improve our
self development being an explorer in a most special way.

Methodology

This study on how Magayon Festival became one of the most famous festivals in the Bicol
region will be a close methodological experiment where a survey form will be transmitted to the
locals in legaspi albay. Either positive or negative comments will be expected that will testify if it
is real or not, and will expect an answer that will satisfy the study..

Scope and Limitation

The scope of this study is only for the people or the citizens of legaspi city albay, because
they knew and already have the experiences of being in this festival. The limitation of this study is
only for my fellow first year taking the bachelor of science in civil engineering, so they would
have a little bit of information or knowledge towards my study.

CHAPTER II

Findings

This study finds that Magayon festival has a lot of different activities There are also
singing competitions, dance competitions, LGBT volleyball tournaments, quiz nights, and talent
competitions. But 2020 marks the introduction of a new event to the Magayon festival – a drag
race. And that’s not the only racing event; an invitational Motocross competition is also part of
this awesome festival, there’s another event to look out for. It is usually held towards the end of
February, and it includes locals from all over the province in colorful costumes showing off their
moves and battling it out for the titles of the best. For the businessman with great acumen, there
are trade fairs too, so you can still transact during your travels. And let’s not forget about one of
the best smelling competitions of the festival, aptly named An Eruption Of Flavors. It is an open
category cooking competition, which is usually held in the evening of the second day of the
festival. It’s an amazing experience for all of you who really feel at home in the kitchen, as it
represents a unique opportunity to learn more about Filipino cuisine, and actually trying your hand
at it. Not to mention that it’s mouth-watering for all the onlookers as well, who are forced to
breathe in all those delicious cooking scents. You cannot afford to miss out on the performances
by the locals where they reenact the tragic love story of Daragang Magayon. All in all, this is a
fascinating festival for the whole family. You may want to take photographs, so carry your camera
along. With so much activity to engage in at Magayon Festival, it does not come as a surprise that
it is more fun in the Philippines

Discussion
 The final result of the survey gives respect to the satisfaction of the researcher and the
study, it was an intelligent idea to bring up this study knowing that it will spoil the terms for a
great future of our society. The survey tells that the integrity of the people sharing their individual
opinion about the study . This also gave them an idea how are they going to improve their
celebration that will be added later on this year based on their plan. The Magayon Festival is a
vibrant and captivating annual event held in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region of the
Philippines. It celebrates the rich cultural heritage and picturesque beauty that this corner of the
world offers.

CHAPTER III

Conclusion

I therefore conclude that Magayon Festival that was originated in Legaspi City Albay was
the most famous festival among the bicol region,based on the statistics from the municipality of
Legaspi City 80% of the people attending the magayon festival is assorted with foreigner and from
other different places. It was a delightful event that many people fall inlove with its story. Based
from the answer of Mr. Vice Mayor Oscar Zobert H. Cristobal”, Magayon festival is for all
albayano’s celebrationg the way of life and a thanks giving for the abundance of land’s plentiful
harvest” No wonder why many people give time and and efforts attending and actively
participating to this festival in Bicol Region.

Recommendation

This Study will benefit a lot of people for them to value and gain more knowledge about this
particular festival, I would like to give thanks to the following recipients, Mr. Olivarez for taking
me to Legaspi City, Mr. Racelis, Secretary of the municipality of administration office for the
additional information and to Mr. Vice Mayor Itself Mr. Oscar Robert H. Cristobal For answering
the survey form , giving me tips and a lot of information regarding to my study, I would also want
to give appreciation to our professor Mr. Pepe Umali For giving us guidance to finish this
extraordinary study.
