WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY ?

Psychology is the study of mind and behavior. It includes the biological influences,
01.
social pressures, and environmental factors that affect how people think, act, and feel.
02.
Obtaining a richer and deeper understanding of psychology can help people achieve insights
03.
into their own actions as well as a better understanding of other people.
04.
The most obvious application for psychology is in the field of mental health where
05.
psychologists use principles, research, and clinical results to help clients manage and
06.
overcome symptoms of mental distress and psychological illness.
07.
It is difficult to capture everything that psychology includes in just a brief definition, but
topics such as development, personality, thoughts, feelings, emotions, motivations, and social
08.
behaviors represent just a portion of what psychology looks for to understand, predict, and
09.
explain.
Psychology is both an applied and academic area that benefits both individuals and society
10. 11.
as a whole. A big part of psychology is devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of mental
12.
health issues, but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the impact of psychology.
13.
Psychologists accomplish these things by using objective scientific methods to understand,
14. 15.
explain, and predict human behavior. Psychological studies are highly structured, beginning
with a hypothesis that is then empirically proven.
16.
There's a lot of confusion today about psychology. Unfortunately, such misconceptions
17. 18.
about psychology are many in part thanks to stereotyped images of psychologists in popular
19.
media as well as the diverse career opportunities of those with psychology degrees.
20.
Sure, there are psychologists who help solve crimes, and there are plenty of professionals
21.
who help people deal with mental health issues.
22.
No matter where psychologists work, their primary goals are to help describe, explain,
23. 24.
predict, and influence human behavior.
The word "psychology" itself is derived from the Greek word psyche, literally meaning "life"
25.
or "breath." Derived meanings of the word include "soul" or "self."
Throughout psychology's history, various schools of thought have formed to explain the
26. 27.
human mind and behavior. In some cases, certain schools of thought rose to dominate the
28.
field of psychology for a period of time.
29.
While these schools of thought are sometimes perceived as competing forces, each point of
30.
view has contributed to our understanding of psychology.
31.
As you can understand, while psychology may be a relatively “young” science it also has a
32.
tremendous amount of both extent and magnitude. The assessment, diagnosis, and treatment
33.
of mental illness are central interests of psychology, but psychology encompasses much
34. 35.
more than mental health.
Today, psychologists look to understand many different aspects of the human intellect and
36.
behavior, adding new knowledge to our understanding of how people think as well as to our
37. 38.
developing practical applications that have an important impact on everyday human lives.
Psychology works to help people improve their individual well-being and do well in an
39. 40.
increasingly complex world. THE END
